    Wood or MDF Cabinet Doors???

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 05:53 PM PDT

We are remodeling our kitchen and have decided to purchase painted Kraftmaid cabinets. We need to decide if we want maple wood doors or the Evercore MDF doors. We live in Ohio with two dogs and two kids. We want this to be our last home, so we want something that will stand the test of time. The contractor recommends the Evercore, as he said the paint will look better, but I'm worried. I've always thought wood was a superior product.

Update: One of the things that was so weird is that there is virtually no difference in price between the wood and high density Evercore doors. Really made me wonder why!

Sunroof - Slow leak, started today. Which professional should I talk to for this?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 02:36 PM PDT

PNW. The rains started today and the Wife noticed a small puddle in the kitchen, promptly looked up to show me the corner of the sunroof's slowly leaking.

Who should I talk to for this? Is it a roofing person or carpenter or who else? I have no clue - Thanks.

120v Outlet connected to switch not working

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 09:32 PM PDT

Hey so I was scoping out the situation to install a garbage disposal under my sink. There's an outlet under the sink, and the switch for it is on the countertop. The switch on the countertop shares the same wall plate as a 120v outlet on a different circuit (which has power)

The breaker is not tripped but I have no power going to the outlet under the sink. What could be the problem? I pulled out the receptacle outlet under the sink and the switch up top to check for loose connections but everything seems to be connected as far as I can see

    Remove Old Paint from Concrete?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 05:38 PM PDT

    Hey All,

The house we moved into is on it's 3rd paint job, and the coat before this was a hideous lime green. When the owners painted, it's almost like they used a sprayer and didn't care that they missed. I've got spots all along the concrete in different places of the house. Front entry way, garage, backyard. Anyone have a good way to potentially remove this / any success stories in what worked for you? Thanks in advance.

What is this hole in my backyard?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 07:09 PM PDT

Man made cylinder about 1.5 inches in diameter. I've only lived in this house a year and I remember finding it months ago when I was looking for a sprinkler head. However I don't remember if it had a cap then?

Does anyone know what it could be?

Replacing hollow door with solid core door. Easy?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 11:54 AM PDT

I want to replace a hollow interior door with a solid core interior door. The ones I have found are all pre-hung.
Trying to make a "safer room" with deadbolt. The door swings out of the room (standing inside the room, you would push the door to open). There is no way to get around this. This would leave the hinges exposed. I'll have to replace the hinges with pinless.
Because I'm replacing a door that already has a frame, could I just take the solid core door out and put it in the existing frame? Longer screws (4") to hold the weight.
Or would it be better to remove the existing frame and rehang everything?

Using FHA 203K loan to purchase a new home that needs TLC. Need to know what’s the cheapest option: General Contractor or separate people for separate jobs?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 06:50 PM PDT

Going to a showing tomorrow and making an offer on the property as well! Super excited about everything. Just wondering if we would come out cheaper getting a general contractor for repairs ($35K max in repairs) or getting separate people for the separate repairs we need done?

A list of the repairs are:

    • Roof needs to be replaced with a tin roof
    • Skirting on the home needs to be replaced
    • 3 out of 4 bedrooms need the ceiling to be repaired; ceiling has water damaged to my understanding.
    • Carpet needs to be snatched up throughout the entire home and replaced with laminated flooring (carpet has stains from water damage in Master Bedroom, mildew as well throughout the rest of the home from the ceilings leaking)
    • Kitchen needs to be remodelled a tad bit (cabinets need to be refurbished/painted, breakfast bar is damaged and needs to be redone, flooring needs to be repaired).
    • Deck needs to be rebuilt, porch needs to be added onto the front, and doors need to be repaired as well.

I called Lowe's not too long ago and was told that the price for adding the laminated flooring is $5.3K, which is definitely not bad. Was considering hiring them for the entire thing if they did general contracting, of course. We also want to repaint the interior of the home as well and get a washing machine, dryer, refrigerator, deep freezer and stove as well brought in since we were informed those were damaged as well. Also plan to hopefully get weatherization and installation within the home if it hasn't already been done.

Was also wondering if $35K would be enough to cover all of these repairs as well? Hope someone can help with this, thanks in advance!

    Laminate vs Vinyl flooring?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 11:07 AM PDT

My husband and I just bought our first house. We're planning to redo our floors as our first big project. We're going to rip up the carpet and tile on the first floor and replace it with either vinyl or laminate. Which is better in the long run?

Edit: or bamboo! We just found a beautiful one.

    Major Water Problem

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 06:23 PM PDT

We just bought our first home in May and have what seems to be a major problem on our hands. Heavy rains tonight have water pouring in our driveway and creating a huge pool by the fence. We checked on the crawl space and there is water pouring in and pooling on the ground.

How do we even begin to fix this? Stopping the water from coming in the driveway seems crucial, or do we just find a way to redirect all of it? (It's ALOT of water). The driveway is a bit lower than the gutters and it comes in from the corners. Who would we even call to fix this?

Here's an imgur album with photos and video of everything. Any help or advice would be really appreciated.

Vinyl sheet flooring removed - does the plank subfloor need replacement? Can I proceed with cement board like I would over a plywood subfloor?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 06:18 PM PDT

I used a circular saw and cut the vinyl and underlayment into squares and popped the squares out. Easy.

https://imgur.com/a/NpjT2Iy The subfloor (?) is pretty damaged around the toilet. It's tongue-in-groove and feels solid otherwise. It is flush with the wood floor in the rest of the house, see the last picture. Under the tonge-in-groove planks is a papery membrane and under that is another layer of planks running diagonally.

I'm guessing the planks come out, and plywood goes in, right? Or can I proceed with the cement board and maybe treat the sketchy areas with bleach?

Baseboards on top of vinyl plank flooring

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 08:17 PM PDT

I, surprisingly, couldn't really find a good answer to this: when installing new baseboard after laying vinyl plank flooring, do you just rest the baseboard on top of the flooring and attach to wall or do you have to leave an expansion gap? (...and yes, when I installed the LVP, I left an expansion gap between the end of the planks and the wall)

I've seen a couple things on this question, somethings I've seen is to actually press the baseboard on top of the LVP but this seems like not a good idea.

Any advice for a 23 year old who's looking to start building some skills?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 03:17 PM PDT

Hey there! I deferred starting vet school until next fall (2021) and I am hoping to use this free time to teach myself some valuable skills so I can be (hopefully) be a more independent and self-sufficient adult, especially because I hope to be a homeowner one day! Are there any skills or projects that you might recommend to someone who is JUST beginning the process of trying to become more handy and self-sufficient? (Eg. basic carpentry skills/projects, how to shut off the main water line, etc) Anything is helpful! I really am at square one here.

My cabinet continues to confound me

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 05:46 PM PDT

I am replacing my OTR microwave with a hood, and as part of that I have to take off the cabinet above my range. The problem is, it refuses to budge.

So far, I have cut through the bottom shelf, removed 6 staples, unscrewed the cabinet from the sides, sawed through three nails in my crown molding, and torn through a few chunks of the cabinet backing. The cabinet still stands strong, however.

Using a hammer as a crowbar, the cabinet siding will peel away from it's neighbours, and the backing seems holy unattached to the back wall.

Any tips on removing the cabinet?? I no longer care about the cabinet I am removing but would like to keep the others in good shape. https://imgur.com/xjert3A

    Home Depot windows?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 12:10 PM PDT

Need to get about 10 windows replaced. Got a quote of $7000 for mid-grade windows from Home Depot. Current windows are old with rotting wood. Sales guy says it's lifetime warranty and that other installers will only provide 1 year on the installation or the material or something. I'll take that with a grain of salt.

Financing seems attractive. 2 years no interest. I know it's one of those deals where they'll back charge interest if it's not fully paid off by then but I can manage that.

How is everyone's experience with Home Depot windows? I'm sure they're bottom of the barrel but they'll be better than what I have now.

I'm still going to get other quotes but what should I look out for?

How do I secure a dishwasher with granite countertops?

Fix cracks after removing shower door

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 07:28 PM PDT

Hi Folks - We removed the old shower door because we wanted to replace it with curtains.

A few pictures of the aftermath

    Two questions:

    • 1) What's the best way to cover up the cracks in the tile? They are about 1/8 inch deep. I don't care much about the visual portion - it's more so I don't want the young kiddos to scratch them and get the leftover gunk in the air or worse in their mouth. Caulk?

    • 2) Regarding the marks on the tub itself — Should I just paint the tub where the marks are? Any recommendation?

    High quote(?) for hardwood refinishing?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 07:22 PM PDT

I tried the Yelp quote thing and have been messaging with a well-reviewed local company, sent some pics and my thoughts... He came back with a quote, without having seen anything in-person, for $3500 plus tax for 600' (3 small bedrooms, living room and hallway, all pretty square) to "refinish" and 3 coats of finish. I told him there were some gaps and gouges that might need filling, sanding obviously, but not sure we needed stain, then varnish. From estimates I've seen online nationally, this sounds incredibly high to me. Thoughts? And yes, I will be getting more quotes and have them come in-person. *Edit: I forgot mention, we already removed carpet, etc. and the floors aren't even THAT bad, but we figured we might as well do it before we move in both because of the gaps and gouges and because there are a few stains and the varnish under the carpet looks pretty dull/worn.

I'm removing the vinyl sheet flooring from the bathroom and replacing it with tile. What's this under it? Do I remove it before installing my cement board?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 11:47 AM PDT

Here are pics. I had expected to find the vinyl attached to plywood.

I think I get to take it out. But what will be under it? Plywood?

What do we do about this basement wall?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 02:11 PM PDT

    Wall

    Wall 2

We think it looks like mold (first pic is a close up of the same wall). We are not sure how to go about cleaning this.

Also, we have black mold in certain spots of our basement. Do we go at it with masks and bleach, or do we spend some $$ to have someone professional deal with that?

    Thanks in advance!
