How does Synology Surveillance Station compare to Blue Iris?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 03:17 PM PST

I was looking to put up a couple security cameras outside after our neighbor across the street almost had their car broken into (luckily someone noticed the guy and he ran away).

I did a lot of reading on this today, and it sounds like Blue Iris is the gold standard for home security NVR software. But I'd have to buy a new (or probably used/refurbished) computer for that. Meanwhile, I already have a Synology NAS.

Considering that 1 or 2 cameras will easily cover our townhome's postage stamp yard and parking spaces, Synology Surveillance Station with its free 2-camera license is looking very attractive. It sounds like it's not as good as Blue Iris, but is it good enough? What would I be missing out on?

    System for residential detached building

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 06:35 PM PST

I have a detached building on my property, looking for recommendations on a security/fire system that alarms me in the main house when the alarm goes off. I'd prefer an alarm in the main house, or do they only notify me through a mobile app style?

HELP with narrowing the field of wireless home security system

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 05:54 AM PST

My wife and I looking to by a new home that does a not have a security system. I've begun looking at wireless systems and the possibilities are almost endless.

What I want is one that combines protection against burglars, smoke, fire and CO. What I don't want are cameras, smart home features (indoor locks, light dimmers) and any sort of listening device like Alexa. I'm much more concerned with quality and reliability than I am with cost.

Any advice or points in the right direction will be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Need some help selecting a lock for a door with a window

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 06:34 AM PST

So the house I'm moving into had deadbolts with the keyed entry on inside and out. For safety reasons I want to swap this for something you don't need a key to get out during an emergency. Now for my question. The door has a window in it, and has a window pane right next to the door as well. What type of lock can I put in the door that someone can't just smash the window, reach in, and unlock the door?

Eufy or similar with local storage & motion?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 09:27 AM PST

Hi there, I'm looking to try and buy a system for my home. I definitely don't want any sort of remote monitoring or monthly fees. I'd like something that has storage, whether in the device or somewhere in my home, where I can look back at what was recorded. Being able to look remotely by phone would be cool, as well as motion type notifications. Floodlight camera type setup would be ideal.

I saw someone else recommend Eufy on this sub, which looks like it would fit my needs, but the reviews for their floodlight camera combo are abysmal. Only 25% of reviewers would recommend it, and talk of constant issues. Is there any sort of similar system that would do what I'm looking for? I'm open to paying more for at home storage of recordings.
