Should I have a security system pre-installed on a new construction home?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 05:04 PM PST

i'm shopping for a new construction home, and the one i like offers an option to pre-install a security system with sensors and keypads, that also connect to the doorbell and garage. i can pick whatever security i want to use... i've never shopped for something like this. any opinions or suggestions on where to start my research would be greatly appreciated.

i had been planning to do something like ring or simplysafe... does the prewired situation work with those?

    TIA

    Simple Home Camera

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 02:17 PM PST

Just need a simple indoor home camera. I looked at wyze and other companies and some people said that they were sending data to other servers not sure how true. Would like to record my living room since I have a suspicion that my room mate has been taking some stuff.

Recommend a simple indoor camera for "live monitoring" of someone who has Alzheimer's?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 03:15 PM PST

    Hello,

My Step-Dad has the beginning of Alzheimer's disease, and my Mom is sometimes worried when she must leave him alone at home. I suggested a camera might help reduce her worrying, and she thought that is a good idea so she can "check in" on him and make sure he's ok when she is gone.

So I am looking for a very simple "monitoring" camera that I can install for her, and she can view the live video on her phone when she is away from the house.

She is not a technical person at all, so the monitoring/live viewing app and steps to access it on her phone must be very very simple. That is the #1 priority.

Her budget is $100 for two cameras. (One for upstairs living room and one for downstairs. Their house is "open concept" so one camera in the ceiling corner of each big room should show everything.)

Any suggestions? I did some looking on Amazon (in Canada where she lives) and found a few - but I don't know if they are good or bad? What do you suggest?

Also, is there any tips for installing on the ceiling in a corner? (What is the best way to get the power cable to the camera on the ceiling corner, so it doesn't look like a cable is going up the wall?)

    Thanks!

    Recommendations for front door locks?

Does anyone have a recommendation for a front door lock brand or something that can't be picked? I'd prefer not to have a code or smart lock. Thanks

Need some help with a Night Owl F6-DVR16-1TB

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 11:31 AM PST

I've read enough in here to know Night Owl gear isn't very good, but I was given the DVR for free and about 8 cameras with a massive bundle of damaged wires. My workplace replaced the system with a new one (Also a Night Owl, but the video quality is much improved from the old system) and my boss let me have the old stuff.

The system was working when unplugged and removed, but now it's not working and I'm not sure why.

I get no video output and I'm using the same VGA cable and monitor that was being used with it. The power light comes on, and shortly after that the HDD light comes out and stays on. The ethernet port is active and can see it pulling an IP from my router.

I'm going to try replacing the HDD (maybe it's corrupt and preventing a boot) but after that I'll be out of troubleshooting steps.

If it comes down to it's broken somehow, I'll simply pull the drive and chuck the box.

HELP with narrowing the field of wireless home security system

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 05:40 AM PST

Thank you in advance. I need to replace an old Ademco wired system that's slowing dying. Until very recently I haven't given 5 thoughts to our old system.

We live in a single family home in a nice suburban neighborhood. I'm looking for recommendations and advice on a new, wireless system that incorporates burglar, smoke/fire and CO protection. I'm not particularly interested in installing cameras inside and outside the house. But that could change. Currently we have monitoring with Watchlight and I have 0 complaints. My preference is to stay with them.

The opinions seem endless. Can anyone give me a good place to start?

    Seeking a car camera recommendation

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 10:21 AM PST

Hi everyone, I'm hoping to get some advice on a camera to keep my car safe at night. Here's some background:

On Thanksgiving, the catalytic converter was stolen from my car, which I park in the back lot of my apartment building. Now that it has been replaced, I'd like to be able to keep an eye on who goes in and out of the lot at night, or to have some footage of the thieves if it happens again. My fiancée bought a security camera for me, but it isn't quite what I need.

I'm looking for a camera that:

    • I can install inside my car to point out the back window

    • runs on batteries, or at least doesn't need an outlet or running car to have power

    • records to an SD card, or otherwise does NOT need to be connected to wifi if uploading to a cloud, as the back parking lot is too far away from my router to connect to my network

    • has decent night-vision, since that's when I'll mostly be using it

    • ideally can be scheduled to record between certain hours, rather than when motion is detected

    • finally, is affordable, since I am currently unemployed due to the pandemic and replacing a catalytic converter is not cheap

Any advice is truly appreciated. Thank you!!
