    Home Improvement: Security system

    Security system

A couple of days ago, my house was attempted to break into at 3 am. They also prowled the car parked in the driveway and took small items all in all causing us over $400 worth of damage. Long story short, I am looking for recommendation on motion lights, cameras and other measures, which may help to deter burglars, but won't cost arm and leg. Cheers!

    Need help figuring out doors

Where the doors are in this don't feel right. #1 is where we enter in from garage & I'm thinking I want to switch the swing since #4 is where we enter into our house.

Right now there is no door on 4 so the "mudroom" is open to those in our house, but there will be a door (3) to access the coat closet.

I'm playing with the idea of a door on 4 swinging into the house, no door on 3 and having the closet more open so we don't have to open a door to hang up coats, we can just hang them. Then taking away the door at 2. So the mudroom, laundry, storage is all open to each other but doors to enter into this area from either way.

I'd love to hear any other thoughts.

[Ontario, Canada] how much weight can a roof beam support?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 08:56 PM PST

    Hello:

This is probably a very dumb question, but here goes, I'm a first time house owner, I've lived in an apartment building all my life.

I purchased my first home recently. It is about 35 years old. It is in Ontario Canada.

The house has an attic, I know you can't walk on the drywall/cement board (?), you have to walk on the beams, so with that in mind:

Would a single beam support an average person?

How much weight would a typical beam in the ceiling support?

Also is it extra work to put in some plywood down to make it easier to walk around in the attic? Would structural modification required?

Finally, can you jump on the second floor of a house?

    Thank you!

Can a standard washer and dryer be made to function in an apartment without dedicated pre-existing plumbing and power outlets?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 12:03 PM PST

This isn't so much a home improvement question in the traditional sense, but is it possible to get a standard washer and dryer to somehow function normally in an apartment that wasn't fitted with an air inlet for a dryer, plumbing for a washer, and power outlets for each?

I would be unable to modify the building or apartment in any significant (read: structural, electrical, or plumbing) way to have these features.

    Thanks
