Really informational podcast episode about home security!!! Posted: 12 Dec 2020 09:34 AM PST The Art of Manliness has a podcast episode (#631) "how to prevent and survive a home invasion". I really think this sub could get a lot of benefit from it. The guest Dave Young talks about home security in a really interesting way and he also has a book (I haven't read it yet). Hopefully this helps/interests you all! Not sure if I could post the link or not, if I can then I will edit to add it. [link] [comments] |
Why are booby traps illegal but putting up barbed wire is ok? Posted: 11 Dec 2020 11:13 PM PST I see this all over Chicago, along with fences with pointy tips. Genuinely wondering why this isn't an insurance liability. [link] [comments] |
How do you prevent house being burgled while burglars are becoming more and more confident. Posted: 12 Dec 2020 03:46 PM PST We had just got home and were sat in the living room when we heard a massive bang in the kitchen. By the time we had walked 2 metres up the hall and opened the door, our car was already leaving the drive. A very large rock had been thrown through the double glazed glass back door and the burglar had clearly just grabbed the keys off the side and made a run for it. We had recently had another car stolen, though that time the burglar had snapped the lock. After that incident, we had snap proof locks fitted. I'm not really sure what we could have done to protect against a huge rock being thrown through the door other than to not have a glass back door. We have a conservatory with glass sliding doors and I want to know if there is anything we can do to protect this short of boarding all the glass up. Edit: sorry for sounding blunt, I'm still processing it all. [link] [comments] |
Cove vs. Simplisafe? (xpost with homesecurity) Posted: 12 Dec 2020 06:24 AM PST Last night, someone broke our window. They ran away, but it made me think I need to get a much better security system than what we have now. Right now, we have Kangaroo, which is an "affordable" security startup that I 100% would not recommend. SimpliSafe seems like the way to go, but Cove has emerged as a strong potential contender, too. We'd prefer to not spend a ton of money monthly, but want decent protection. Any thoughts/help? Literally have carts up for both sites now and trying to figure out what to buy. [link] [comments] |
Anyone know anything about texecom Veritas 8compact Posted: 12 Dec 2020 08:46 AM PST It's ringing now and I don't know the code to shut it down - is there any overide passcode? [link] [comments] |
Does it make good sense to have the NVR kept outdoor? Or is this a bad idea? Posted: 12 Dec 2020 01:22 AM PST So my cameras are mostly for outdoor use and I also wish to keep my NVR outdoor and have it hooked up to an access point. The access point will connect to the router(indoor) via wireless connection. The idea is I don't want LAN cables running in my house. I would rather have cables only in the outdoor areas and connect to a NVR (connected to an Access Point which would send data to my router which is on a different floor) I am planning to use DS-7604NI-K1 for my NVR. Do you have any opinion on this? [link] [comments] |
Camera and Computer System Recommendation Posted: 11 Dec 2020 07:52 PM PST Hello, As the title eludes, I am looking for recommendations on cameras as well as supporting computer system/setup to assist with monitoring a property that is both a home and a business. Motion detection and recording are required. The goal is to monitor the area with a level of detail for capturing car license plates or at least a level of detail for identifying people within a reasonable distance. I'm unsure of the distance from the beginning of driveway to the house (measurement is WIP). Linked below is a satellite image of the property. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Dec 2020 07:49 PM PST Looking for a Lorex lnr380 mobile app for Android. It seems they stopped supporting it in 2019. Any work around? My phone is a Samsung S10+ running Android 10. [link] [comments] |
