Tired of cheap motion alarms that are triggered by shadows. What are some options to look at?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 11:01 AM PDT

I need to set up some sensors across a path in my yard in case a thief comes back there, but to be effective it needs to be on all night and part of the day. It needs to trigger an audio alarm that I hear, but I can't have a device waking me with false alerts five times a night. It needs to be resistant to this stuff. This seems to plague various detectors and DVR camera systems I've dealt with. Moving branches, shadows from trees, and spiderwebs make all of these devices useless for real security.

An object breaking a beam sounds like the way to go. Photocell beams are the oldest and cheapest technology there is. Just to see what the options were I did a search on Amazon for something that included a chime/alarm. I found a grand total of TWO options for genuine beam sensors that included a chime. The vast majority of the other results were false hits and were for conventional passive IR motion sensors.

Maybe I'm not searching this right, or there's other technology to consider (microwave maybe?) What would you suggest.

Threats in the Woods - The Setup

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 04:56 AM PDT

    Good morning.

Last post was here. Thanks for your advice.

So I was now looking around for hardware parts:

figuring out whether I need just the PoE switch or since my laptop is oldish maybe it's better to buy a complete NVR.

Then I saw this Reolink kit that apparently already has most of what I need.

Do you see any major red flags that should make me think twice before buying this one? I mean a blatant lack of some essential option or some major problem I can't see being less than a newbie? Do I still need a router or can I connect the NVR unit directly to a computer?

    Thanks.

Looking for a standalone siren/panic button for my home

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 07:30 PM PDT

We have solid camera and flood lights outside. Ideally I'd like to have a full security system, but money is tight. I don't care if someone breaks in when we're all gone(I mean I do but you get it,) I just want to make sure my family is safe when I'm not here but they are.

What I'd like is a system with 1 or 2 sirens and some panic buttons/fobs I can place in a couple rooms. That way if something goes boom in the night, we hit the button and a siren sounds. Hopefully scaring an intruder away

    Any suggestions

    Best outdoor security camera system?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 08:54 AM PDT

I'm moving to a new home and want some more security than nothing. (It's less than ten minutes from the police station and in a good part of town but I had my childhood home broken into three times and I just don't want to take any chances.)

I was doing some preliminary searches and am a little lost. There are so many options and reviews are pretty vocal and seemingly contradictory. Between Nest, Ring, Vava, Blink, Simplisafe, Canary.... I just don't know.

I would like a non subscription based system. I only have two doors that I want to have cameras and I'd like to be able to review footage and get alerts of suspicious activity.

Can anyone recommend something that isn't too difficult in set up and they really like?

    GDMSS/iDMSS stops live view

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 03:11 AM PDT

We've got a Dahua NVR and a spare iPad and spare Samsung tablet. We've got iDMSS and GDMSS on them respectively but live view always stops after 10-15 minutes and the cameras need refreshing. Is there any way to make it so that the cameras won't need refreshing and live view will be constantly displayed? Thanks

    Spider infestation, help!

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:53 PM PDT

Was doing work and kept finding spiders on the table, wondered where they were coming from so I looked up and found ~50ish on the ceiling, pretty tiny but fast. I'm really freaking out here. Read that they can live for about a year, and I'm not sure what to do or how to get rid of them. Any advice?

(so sorry if this is the wrong sub!)

    Experience with LighCam?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2020 08:21 PM PDT

Love the idea of a bulb and camera in one, but everything I've read so far is from 2018-2019, nothing recent and almost no reviews. TIA
