Home security: What is the best security system with installation?

What is the best security system with installation?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 04:02 PM PDT

Looking for the best possible security system that comes with installation, or if need be, pay for professional install. As well as 24/7 monitoring.

Roughly 1200sqft first floor, 14 windows, 3 entry/exits and I do want to add some indoor/outdoor cameras.

Not sure if it matters but this in in CT

Looking for a L5100-Wifi Module starting with a MAC starting with 00-D0-2D

    Posted: 27 May 2020 09:28 PM PDT

Does anyone have an older L5100-Wifi Module they'd be willing to sell me? I can't seem to find one anywhere online...It's probably about time I upgrade to a Lyric, but wouldn't mind holding onto what I currently have.

All I have found so far start with "B8", I need one that starts with "00-D0"

Thanks for anyone who can help.

    Indoor IP Cams: Use Cases?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 04:45 PM PDT

I'm finishing up designing and setting up my home security system using a NAS as an NVR. I am planning to have several 4K IPX67 turret cams for outside that will be connected via PoE to a secure VLAN, recording 24/7 on a 14 day loop. They will be watching the front and back yards, all entry points to the house as well as all gates and windows and can send live alerts to my phone within seconds of detecting motion. If someone does actually enter the house I have door sensors on all the entry points as well as a motion sensor inside also covering the entry points. There are no pets or children in the house.

I'm at the point now where I'm about to run the PoE wiring throughout the house all in one go and am debating if I want to run additional cabling to have the option to install PoE PTZ cams *inside* the house.

The main reason I'm using a NAS/NVR is to keep all this off of the cloud, but I will still have remote access to the video feeds via apps connecting with HTTPS. Connecting cameras inside my house to the internet seems like a privacy/security risk, regardless of how difficult or unlikely it is that it will be hacked. As it stands with the current build, the indoor motion sensor will be the only indicator that someone is inside the house, assuming I've somehow missed them on both the outdoor cam motion tracking that's watching the entries and the door/window sensors. That also means there is no physical camera inside the house to hacked in the first place.

So are there any other use cases for indoor IP cams other than generic curiosity or nanny cams? Anything worth opening the door to some unlikely but still possible privacy issues? Something I haven't thought of? Making sure the stove is off or the deadbolts are locked? Getting the intruder's face on cam for prosecution in case the outdoor cams didn't get it? (do burglars remove their balaclavas once they're inside? lol)

Ring Doorbell installed by ADT, is it usable?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 10:09 PM PDT

My family and I used to have a contract with ADT which provided the ADT pulse service I believe. This came with a ring video doorbell. We have the service for about 2 years but then we cancelled it. Upon cancelation the only thing that we noticed changed was that we could no longer used a device which allows us to call emergency services by clicking a button. Other than that we had one other camera that was in our backyard as well as the ring doorbell BUT we had never accessed those cameras which means that we could never view the footage of what was happening in our backyard or at our doorbell, essentially they were being being unused. Well I decided to use the ring doorbell by itself with out ADT. The reset was going fine but upon connecting to my phone, it claims that the doorbell is connected to another owner. My father claims that he never had the ring doorbell application installed and that in his emails no where is the ring app mentioned. Who is the owner of this ring doorbell? Could it be associated with ADT's Pulse monitor in our home? Please any help would be appreciated.

Really need advice on camera placement

    Posted: 27 May 2020 08:33 AM PDT

    Hey there,

I'm finally getting around to adding outdoor cameras to my home security and really just wanted a second opinion on camera placement.

I have a doorbell camera that covers the front path and the right hand side of my house, that side is a dead end cul-de-sac (green lines show view of doorbell cam).

I'm planning on adding a camera on the front because the driveway isnt covered by a camera.

The cameras I'm getting have 130 degree viewing angle.

So I mocked up the 3 options placing one on my garage:

Option 1. Placing it on the corner closest to the front door, angled toward the entry to the street. Purple lines show it's viewing angle.

    https://imgur.com/a/rozFEaT

    Option 2:

In the middle of the garage. Covers most of the cul de sac to the right, and most of the street entry to the left. I don't think it will be optimal as there seems to be some blind spots.

Red lines show the camera angle.

    https://imgur.com/a/iTtW38L

    Option 3:

On the far side of the garage. This I think is least preferable, it's pointed towards the cul de sac which the doorbell cam already covers and there won't be much activity from there unless my it comes from my neighbour.

Blue lines show the camera angle.

I'm a security noob, but I'm thinking option 1 is the best placement? Walking up to my front door have to walk right up and past the camera, and it completely covers the entrance to the street.

Did you lock the door before leaving?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 01:59 AM PDT

A lot of people here seem to forget whether they have locked their doors or done other stuff before leaving and end up being stressed out until they arrive back home.

I am using this app that I found and is made exactly for this purpose:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xbrsoft.DidILockTheDoor

It's really helpful because you can choose to even take a photo of your door right after you lock it, and the app will automatically delete the photo for you when arriving home, in order not to occupy that much space.

    home security basics

    Posted: 27 May 2020 09:11 AM PDT

there are lots of bs out there on home security. like, getting a fake security camera. trust me, it doesn't work. there are a lot of mistakes the common person makes, meaning the person doesn't realize that he or she is making that mistake. if you do know a few of these mistakes, then it would be beneficial for you to prevent them.

So, I'll just list out 15 home security mistakes here:

    1. Putting a key under your doormat
    2. hiding a key anywhere outside
    3. weak locks on your doors and windows
    4. using fake security equipment
    5. relying on a barking dog
    6. not having enough outdoor lights
    7. putting valuable items near a window
    8. not maintaining your security system properly
    9. announcing when you will be gone(vacation, dentist, etc.)
    10. announcing your wealth
    11. having any part of your house unlocked
    12. assuming day is safer than night(it isn't)
    13. not hiring a house sitter when on vacation
    14. leaving your garage doors open
    15. leaving packages outside for a long time

Frustrated with RemoBell+ doorbell. Jagged video and always 'bad connection'. Anyone else having same experience?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 07:44 AM PDT

So I have a RemoBell+ video doorbell for just around a year now and have enjoyed the look of it. The app needs help but it's not bad. The issue is that the bell always has bad signal, even though my wifi strength at the door is very strong (I have a Plume and a pod is about 10' away).

So not sure if the bad signal is causing video degradation but the bottom half of any video is all grainy/jagged/pixelated. Support has been useless for the most part. They keep saying all is well.

    Anyone else having issues?

Thinking of replacing it with the Kuna doorbell while adding some Kuna light/cam fixtures in the back. I'd rather not have multiple apps if I can do it.

    Thoughts?
