    Door Handle Advice

    Posted: 21 May 2020 03:56 PM PDT

I have a fortified walk-in closet in my master bedroom. It has a steel security door and steel door frame. The door handle is trashy and when we had the house rekeyed, I had the locksmith disable the lock in the handle. I now have several items that I want to keep secure. What do you recommend for an interior door handle?

Tired of my cam and software giving me trouble.

    Posted: 21 May 2020 02:43 PM PDT

Help me out, I'm not sure what camera/software can do what I need. I'm trying to stay with free sofware, as I have a cheap eBay camera that I've been using RTSP to connect to it with iSpy previously (resource hog, slowed down my PC too much) and now ContaCam. ContaCam works great (although stills slows down my system a bit) for long periods, weeks at a time, but then it's Active Zones I set get reset randomly day after day, it's a pain in the ass seeing 20 folders recorded with no movement besides the on screen time. I've also sometimes thought it was running, Icon visible in the system tray, but I move the mouse over it and it disappears because it wasn't running. It must have crashed at some point earlier that day or the night before! So, what I'm looking for...Is there a camera with onboard storage I can connect to without having to bother with external software to do the recording? This current camera records straight to SD card but as far as I can tell there's no way to view those files without actually removing the MicroSD for viewing the files on the on another device.

I am on Windows, I have considered switching to Linux but some stuff that should be easy, seems to be over complicated to get it done.

Graphene-infused material could be the cornerstone of next-gen smart sensors

    Posted: 21 May 2020 12:58 PM PDT

Not sure if this is the right sub, but I'm trying to figure out how to remove this alarm sensor (securewatch HKC) from the partset manually and not from the alarm, temporarily while the builders are adding the house extension.

DSC keypads off and alarm going off

    Posted: 21 May 2020 11:09 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I just moved into our new home a few weeks ago and we've been using the existing alarm system without monitoring. I have the following:

    Control Panel: DSC PC1832
    Key Pad: DSC PK5501

When I came home today and opened the door the alarm system immediately went off. Odd, because usually I have 45 seconds to get to the keypad and disarm the system. I ran to the keypad and noticed the LCD screen was totally dim, and it wouldn't accept my code to disarm it. I ran upstairs and the other keypad I have was also dim. Finally I just shut off power to the transformer (plugged in a hall closet) and the siren finally stopped.

So what happened here? How do I fix this.. I'm worried if I power it up that the alarm will just go off again without stopping. I can't remember if the key pad showed any trouble codes prior to this. There certainly wasn't a 'beep' every once in a while indicating there was a problem.

Attaching security camera to vinyl siding/soffet

    Posted: 21 May 2020 11:01 AM PDT

So what are you guys doing when you mount your security camera's to vinyl siding?

I just bought my first security camera system after several break in's in the area PLUS some junkie getting high in my back yard next to my kids playset and deciding to say screw it and leave his used needle and 2 lighters in my yard (dead serious).

So im gonna be installing 4 camera's around my house and all of them i want to put on my siding right underneath the soffet. What do you guys suggest i do and how to do it?

It's a basic Lorex system, bullet style camera's purchased from Costco. My old man has had a Lorex system from Costco for 3 years now and its been pretty decent quality and he finds they work well for what he needed, so i decided to go the same route.

Do i screw the camera's right into the vinyl siding? or is there a better way of doing it?

    TIA

    Reolink RLC-511 5MP / RLC-410 5MP Mic problem

    Posted: 21 May 2020 09:10 AM PDT

I ordered two RLC-511 5MP and one RLC-410 5MP but all of them have what I would say a unusable mic,

all are updated to latest firmwares.

Any one own these and have same experience?

I found this video comparing RLC-410 4MP which seems to have a usable mic and the RLC-420 5MP with the same problem I am having.

but then I also found a video of the RLC-511 5MP with usable mic.

So have they messed with the firmware as the RLC-511 video is old or hardware because all 4MP seems to have OK mic or did I just receive bad units?.

Best system for google home integration?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 06:53 PM PDT

I am looking into an NVR system that works with Google Home. Primarily I want to say "show my front yard" and see the camera feed on my TV or google hub. I am not even sure which route is the best shot. Here are my several random questions.

Lorex and Swann NVRs seem to support it. But Lorex is famous for their crappy software. Not sure about Swann. Do they work as they should?

Reolink cameras seem to work with google home, but their NVRs don't. Is this correct?

I know there are some DIY softwares like blue iris. Does any of them work seamlessly with google home?

    Thank you for reading!

Leaving for military training soon, but will move soon after. Need a security system for my wife’s peace of mind. Recommendations?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 07:31 PM PDT

I leave for training soon and both myself and my wife want a security system for our home since she will be alone (about 4 months).

Professional monitoring is a must, and I would like to be able to just pack it up and take it with us when we move after my training.

Any recommendations? Would SimpliSafe be a good option?

    TVI DVR with RTSP streams?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 02:05 PM PDT

We need WIRED security cameras and wired alerts to cover our driveway entrance about 500' from the house, as well as about 150' linear feet of the house exterior. Wifi will not work for us.

    Posted: 19 May 2020 08:26 PM PDT

It's a long story but I am pretty sure my husband is being stalked, and lately it has escalated. Our mail is being delivered pre-opened, (we already ordered a new locking mailbox) and 2 cars 'broke down' directly in front of our new semi-rural house on a very quiet street this week and the drivers spent a couple hours each just looking 'kinda busy' before shutting the hood and driving off without any apparent car trouble. There is a legal battle going on with a lot at stake and my husband is being pressured to agree not to testify as a witness in some upcoming civil litigation cases against his employer.

This started at our old house last year and I told the FBI agents working on the situation about it at the time and they kinda looked at me like I was crazy and told me it was probably just reporters sniffing around and that I shouldn't worry. They might have been right back then, but this feels different... I might just be losing my mind from extreme stress, but my gut is telling me that this stuff coinciding with the increasing negotiations between all the lawyers is not harmless and I'm terrified for my husband's safety.

He's not eligible for witness protection (nor does he think he needs it), but we would both feel better if we could have advance warning if someone was to enter the property, and we'd definitely like to have video evidence of any more weirdos that stop in front of the property (not to mention anyone snooping through our mail and trash).

We are not comfortable with wifi for paranoid reasons, but even so, the distance and terrain we need to cover makes it impractical. We have already spent a ton of our savings on this move and lawyers since this all happened so if you could suggest solutions that were under $1,500 or so, that would be great.

We have those silly battery powered magnetic alarms on all the windows and doors that we turn on at night before bed, we've got dowels in the sliding door wells, and we have a really annoying cheap driveway alarm way up the driveway and close to the house where it is close enough to actually work, but it gets tripped constantly by all the wildlife (giving me a heart attack every time).

If possible, I'd like to be alerted if the cameras pick up a person and not just a bird or bobcat, our Nest camera at the old house could do that, but is that kind of processing only available with online subscription services??? I feel extremely violated by everything that has happened already, and at this point I would rather not have cameras at all than know anyone that could have previously installed keyloggers on our devices could easily watch our comings and goings from our own security cameras.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Security system reccomendations

    Posted: 20 May 2020 06:34 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a security system for my new house. I quite stressed since I know that a couple burglars happened last month in my future neighborhood. So I'm looking for:

-great outdoor (to take care of my packages and car) and indoor cameras. -24/7 professional monitoring

I have some options but I would like to hear your suggestions based on your experience. So far I have the following systems in mind:

-vivint (seems complete, however paying almost 3k in equipment and putting myself in a 5 years contract doesn't sound good)

-ADT (I've read so many negative comments related to their costumer service and long contracts that really idk)

    -deep sentinel

-Abode or simplisafe (these sec systems don't have outfoor cameras).

    Thank you!

    Plug in camera with WiFi?

    Posted: 19 May 2020 07:48 PM PDT

Any recommendations for a camera that can be plugged into a wall outlet via power cord and hung outside of a window with WiFi capabilities? I don't know why but I can't seem to come across exactly what I'm looking for... I would really appreciate some insight.

    Expanding my home alarm setup

    Posted: 19 May 2020 06:13 PM PDT

6 months ago, we signed up with ADT in Canada and have a panel, which is a tablet... And among other devices a z-wave front door dead bolt that is controlled by the panel. Made by Wieser.

Fast forward to today and my wife is not happy with the look of the lock. She wants to buy a new one.

When I call ADT, they insist we have to purchase their dead bolt.

Does anyone have the experience to confirm or deny this? I am genuinely hoping it is a cash grab and or uneducated call centre staff telling me I can't just add any z-wave lock. If I am wrong then please, by all means tell me to get my head out of my ....

Fingers crossed, happy wife, happy life.
