    Home security: Thoughts on Nest?

    Home security: Thoughts on Nest?

    Thoughts on Nest?

    Posted: 27 May 2020 12:50 PM PDT

I'm trying to set up security in my apartment. Currently looking into cameras and alarm, and was thinking of going with Nest for both. I don't want a monitoring service with a monthly fee, just want to be alerted on my phone, be able to look at the cameras, and call the police if needed. I'm willing to spend a little more on an easier to set up and maintain system, as opposed to saving a few bucks on a headache. Is Nest my best option, or am I overlooking something?

    Help Picking Home Security System

    Posted: 27 May 2020 09:34 AM PDT

My family recently bought a new split level home and will be moving in about month. At our current home we have ADT, but we are paying about $70/month for monitoring services. I am looking to have the doors wired/monitored (2 patio, 2 regular) and all ground floor windows (6 ish?). I know there are a lot of DIY options but I'm also not super techy. I am wondering what companies or services you all recommend that are super user friendly and won't break the bank. Thanks!

Fires and Horses and Creepers, Oh MY!

    Posted: 27 May 2020 01:15 PM PDT

Hi! Came here for (hopefully) some help/suggestions. Recently bought my 1st home and am starting to research security camera options but I don't know squat about security cameras... or cameras of any kind, really. I'm not as interested in deterring weirdos from breaking into my house as I am in being able to see what's happening on the whole of the lot.

Had a couple of near incidents last summer (I'm in SoCal and right next to an undeveloped 10 acre lot and fire is a thing) that have got me worried about keeping an eye on my horses when I'm gone to work. Unfortunately, I've also got some weirdo neighbors (and the local homeless/tweaker population who use my fence line as a pathway) who bear keeping an eye on as well.

Anyway, reasons aside, I'd like to figure out the "best option for me" cameras that I could set up to watch the perimeter of the property. Ideally, It'd be nifty if I could also move them to change view (but I don't even know if that's a reasonable "nice to have") and if there's a reasonably priced and effective solar powered option, that'd be SUPER cool. FWIW, my lot is 50' W x ~218' L.

So, if anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear! Barring that, can anyone suggest a good resource to start learning about all of this stuff so I don't buy some goofy crap and waste a bunch of $$ that I didn't really have in the 1st place?

I got suckered into buying ADT and now they're delaying in refunding me. What are my options?

    Posted: 26 May 2020 06:34 PM PDT

To make a long story short, I bought an ADT system, realized what a terrible deal it was, how pressured I felt during the interaction, and how expensive it was afterward. I'm young, naive, and learned a lot from my mistake, but I digress.

I put in my request for a refund the very next day, following their complicated rules of faxing in a request form that day. Soon after, they gave me the $100 installation fee back, but not the equipment cost ($800) or the monthly rate ($60).

I called them, and they stated it could take up to 30 days to process the refund. Yet when I brought up how they already processed the initial installation fee, they had no actual response.

I have also called my credit card company Chase and the process is in dispute. Chase says their team will be in contact with the merchant directly to get them to refund.

HOWEVER, let's say that ADT continues being dicks and they don't refund me or deny Chase's dispute. What are my next steps at that point?

EDIT: The contract had a 3-day cancellation policy from the date of signing with full refund. I clarified this with the salesperson. I cancelled mine the very next day.

    Help me pick cameras!!

    Posted: 26 May 2020 09:23 PM PDT

I just bought arlo pro 3, 3-pack from Costco. Watching the battery die, I'm considering taking them back And buying a more robust lorex 8 camera sustem with 4 k and two way audio. But it's more expensive and would be paying someone to install it. What do I need. I like listening to the audio on my arlo. I like how easy the app is with my lorex. Any suggestions? It's so overwhelming looking at all the possibilities.
