Recommendations on Mounting 2 Small Outdoor POE Cameras on Light Poles

    Posted: 18 May 2020 07:15 PM PDT

Hi! I'm starting my journey installing home security cameras. I've also begun using smart switches for all my outdoor lights.

My intention is to install hard-wired cameras, powered over ethernet, which have night vision capabilities. I'm not sure yet about an all-in-one switch/recorder, or a NVR with a separate POE switch. I would love recommendations. I'm trying to manage it myself, without using an internet service. My house has five entrances (two of them are for the basement but I want to protect them too) and my plan is to work towards having seven cameras. So the switch should support at least 8 cameras.

I recently had two new 12-volt landscape light poles installed outside, and I ran cat6 to them when they were installed. Since I have that cat6 already in place, my plan is to put my first two cameras on the poles, facing the front door and the side door. Later on, the other five cameras will face away from the house in strategic positions, so I can get video both coming and going.

So, I'm looking for two POE outdoor cameras, that are small and discrete, which I can mount to landscape light poles just a few inches in diameter. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Oh, here's my amateur attempt to diagram what areas the cameras would cover, LOL https://imgur.com/RRuRPLy

    Thanks so much in advance.

    Multiple needs with Security Cameras

    Posted: 19 May 2020 12:32 AM PDT

I've recently been trying some different camera options, and could use some advice! The cameras are really for two purposes:

    1) Some camera are to keep an eye on the outside around our house

    2) One camera is to watch an elderly relative who lives with us in an in-law unit.

Currently, I've been playing with Wyze cameras using RTSP. However, one of the main needs with the indoor camera is to be able to have continuous recording and easily be able to scan the video. Unfortunately, the relative has had some falls, and we need to be able to quickly review the footage to see what happened. Obviously, motion detection will not help here, as the falls can happen at any time.

The other challenge is I don't use any Windows computers, just Mac's and some Raspberry Pis. I also have a QNAP NAS, and have tried using the QVR Pro software, but found it a bit buggy.

Any suggestions for a budget-friendly solution?

Live alone in apartment, newbie to hone security, how can I protect my home and also use a security camera when I don’t have wifi?

    Posted: 18 May 2020 11:35 PM PDT

I am new to hone security so please bear with me. I am a female who lives alone in a third floor apartment. There are no gates or security cameras to come in. I don't know my neighbors. I do not have a deadbolt or alarm and my door only has one lock that seems very weak.

I will be suing another person in a few weeks and this person is shady and morally bankrupt. I would not put it past them to pay someone to break in when I'm not there to rifle through my stuff and/or put up hidden cameras. This has made me very seriously consider my home security and how I need to beef it up. I am only concerned with them breaking in when I'm not there as this person would not do it when I'm home. So my questions veer towards protecting my place when I'm gone although I'd like to get advice for protecting my place in general from intruders whether I'm home or not.

Here are the things I'd like to get recommendations:

    1) something I can do or install to enforce my door from being broken into when I'm home and not home?

    2) a security camera I can use that won't be tampered with and doesn't need wifi as I don't have wifi or cellular data other than my phone and I take it with me when I leave. I was thinking of using a game camera or an old iPod touch with camera but it seems it can be tampered with if the person breaking in sees it, all they have do do is edit themselves out of the video?

    3) legal weapons I can keep my bed and in the entryway in case someone breaks in so I can protect myself? Hammer? Mace? Bug spray? Knife? I don't want to get in trouble with the law though, so nothing illegal. I just want to protect myself in case.

    4) easy tells that I can set up when I leave so I can tell if someone was inside my place?

    Thanks very much!

Need Outdoor Wi-Fi camera system with night vision and remote access - legit best options for a lower/middle class single mom with a crazy ex?

The title is self-explanatory, please let me know anything you can recommend. Friend's Ex-husband is a cunning lunatic who has previously used something to jam up the wireless signal for her previous Arlo security camera. Thanks in advance.

Afraid and unsure after strange happenings around my apartment unit

    Posted: 18 May 2020 06:23 PM PDT

    Hello all,

This is related to concerns about my personal safety after some strange occurrences at my apartment unit. Looking for advice if anyone has possible explanations or experience with something similar. I hope this is the right subreddit for some perspective. Thank you in advance!

I live in a ground-level college town apartment with three girls, myself included. The complex faces a park in a relatively nice neighborhood. One roommate is out of town due to COVID, the other lives part-time with her parents (who live in the same city as our apartment) so she is around about half the time. We used to have a spare key hidden outside our door, but we immediately took it in and changed the locks after the first incident.

First incident happened a month ago around Easter. Just my bf and me in the apartment (thankfully I was not alone), and around 10:30am I heard someone in my roommates' room (which shares a wall with my room). I assumed it was my roommate. However, an hour or so later said roommate texts me that she just arrived at the apt. I immediately realize the scuffling in her room was NOT her. We go to check the room where I had heard someone and the desk lamp is on and the closet door is wide open, both things that no residents of our apt ever do. We believe someone had been in our apartment messing with our things and used the spare key to get in. We changed the locks and took in the spare. Contacted apt management, but not the police as we had no real proof of anything.

Second incident happened this morning. Some time had passed without trouble so I was back to my normal routine. Same situation, just me and my bf in the apartment. Grateful I wasn't alone. I had been up till 2am doing hw next to a window by our front door with the light on, so I know that nothing happened outside until after I went to bed. When my bf left around 7:30am in the morning, someone had left three large stones on our doormat, pulled from a gravel patch lining the fences between the units. Google suggested possible burglars "marking" a target, but that seems far-fetched considering how obvious the stones were. Also, it's 2020, not 1930. Possibly a prank to make whoever stepped out the door trip on the stones, but it was pouring rain last night, and they would have had to place them between 2am and 7am. Not exactly a good prank or prime college prank hours on a rainy Sunday night. I contacted the apt management and the non-emergency police line, but neither had any info or history of this happening.

Does anyone have any advice or ideas on what this could be about? I'm quite shaken up by it. I don't want to put myself or my roommates in possible danger by brushing it off, but I also don't want to overreact and lose my head.

    Thank you! :,)

Edit: I can't attach an image, but there were three stones, all about six to eight inches tall. Lined up in a row on our welcome mat.

DSC Alexor PC9155G - SMS support?

    Posted: 18 May 2020 01:19 PM PDT

Moved to a house with preinstalled DSC security system.

This model includes a slot for SIM card but from looking at the manual it requires info from a security company.

I'm interested to use the system independently without a sec company. Can this model be used so that it would send a text message or email when a incident occurs?

This might be a stupid question but I'm just getting started and at the moment this stuff is kinda overwhelming.

    Smoke/CO2 for Simon XTI System?

    Posted: 18 May 2020 08:29 PM PDT

Could anyone point me to where I can buy smoke & CO2 detectors that would work with a Simon XTI system? Guardian is monitoring company if that matters. They came out to do the initial install and told me the monitors that were in place in our new home wouldn't work and then I got the "you didn't here me say this, but if you look up Simon XTI online you can probably procure them yourself for cheaper than $125/pop." So far it isn't immediately obvious to me which would and would not work.

    Advice for New Home Rental

    Posted: 18 May 2020 05:42 PM PDT

Hey there! My girlfriend and I are getting ready to move in to our new rental home in a couple weeks, and we want to get some home security figured out. The previous owners of the home had Vivint, but after looking through some threads here and elsewhere online, it seems pretty plain that they aren't great. Plus there's only a panel and maybe a couple sensors as far as we know, so we'd need to buy more equipment anyway.

So here's what we're looking for. We want a doorbell camera for the front door and an outdoor camera to watch the detached garage where my woodworking shop is. The driveway leads directly to that and has the home side door close, so I was thinking that one outdoor camera can watch both side door and garage. I'm open to being wrong about that, though. Motion sensors on doors and windows and/or lights could be nice, too, but those cameras are pretty high on the list.

I'm also probably comfortable going DIY, but if there are reliable and relatively affordable options for someone else to install, that would be awesome, too. I can go either way professional vs self monitoring, but overall, I'd like to not go into some absurdly high cost for equipment and monthly cost. I've looked some into alarm.com and adobe, but I'd love to hear anything about these and more.

If it's helpful to know, I live in Memphis. I look forward to hearing what y'all have for us as we start this home security journey!

How you can keep your home safe and secure from your phone for FREE...

    Posted: 18 May 2020 04:46 PM PDT

Proxima.Ai is an app that lets you keep your home safe by notifying you if an unknown device enters into your proximity, because even criminals have phones. It does this by first detecting devices that are normally around you. Once that is complete, all you have to do is keep the app running in the background and you will be alerted if a potential intruder enters your proximity. You can find Proxima on the App Store here. As I mentioned in the title, it is 100% free, so feel free to check it out.
