Home security: WiFi on house and property

Home security: WiFi on house and property

    WiFi on house and property

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 11:18 AM PDT

I am currently in the midst of a 3000 sq ft new home build.

I had CAT6 run to every coax drop in bedrooms, living room, office, playroom (7 total) and two CAT runs to each of four exterior camera locations.

We have zero cell signal on our 1 acre lot and immediately surrounding it. Because of our jobs, my wife and I need to be accessible 24/7 by cell.

Since our home build has been stopped because of this horrible COVID tragedy, I realized that I want to get in and run a few more CAT runs for WAPs inside and possibly two more outside for outdoor WAP for help with cell sig.

I don't want to go overboard but was thinking about two Ubitiquiti lite WAPS on each floor plus a outdoor WAP on the front and back of house. As the outdoor units are directional, do I to be concerned with the sides of the house.

Contractor's electrician is done. Everything is roughed in and they stopped prior to doing insulation so now is my time to get in.

All of this sounds like overkill but I'm not sure. Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

If you have a pile of old, unusable smartphones, you can make them into security cameras!

    Grimburg Less Lethal?

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 04:03 PM PDT

Has anyone ever used these as alternative to a firearm? They are 35-39 joules at 350-400 fps out of a special paintball gun.

Here is the link for the rounds and the gun I was going to purchase. Check you videos.

I'm sure this has been asked 1000 times but I need 2 outdoor cameras and a controller (software or hardware) recommendation. Preferrably something PoE and that has low lag/latency when viewing on the local network

I want to install one camera above my front door and one overlooking the backyard. The house and yard fence are set up in such a way that I really don't need to have other angles visible.

I've been looking at the reolink cameras but I don't know how good those are? What about foscam? Ubiqui G3?

I have a Dell Optiplex 9020 with an i5 processor and 16 GB of RAM that I use to host homeasistant (in docker) and like 7 other docker containers all related to smart home and media stuff. I'm worried that if I went with something like zoneminder or Blue Iris it'd put a lot of strain on the machine. I rather it didn't run with the CPU at 75% at all times, you know?

How well does Unifi Video work and does it work with third party cameras such as Reolink or does it work only with the G3?

Should I be looking at a hardware (NVR) solution to resolve all of this even though it is only ever going to be 2 cameras? If so what NVR should I be looking at and is the Unifi Cloud Key worth it at that point?

    Home defense firearm light

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 06:51 PM PDT

Hey everyone, We recently purchased a gun for self defense in the house. Since it's never going to leave the house besides range trips, we want a light on it. What would you say is too many lumens for a light for the house? My options are: 1) Olight PL-Pro Valkyrie (1500 lumens in high setting, then after 1.5 minutes switches to 600 lumens in which it can last 45 minutes, has 300 lumens mode that lasts 90 minutes) 2) Olight PL-Valkyrie (1200 lumens 1.5 minutes then 600 lumens for 70 minutes) 3) Olight PL-Mini 2 (600 lumens for about a minute, then ~60 lumens for an hour) This is for a full size handgun. Thanks!

Advice for mom and daughter living alone

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 11:39 PM PDT

Hi, daughter here. So, we have a situation. Our wifi got hacked and the passwords were changed about a week ago. We didn't notice since we had dual band, and we changed it all. Passwords, names, everything. 4 hours later, we were falling asleep and someone was tapping on my older moms window, then she began yelling for me, and when i woke up they were banging on my window. We were so shaken to our cores, grabbed knives and the baseball bat, went to the living room, and called the police. Police searched our property, saw nothing, then a neighbor from apartments came over and told us they heard someone running and what sounded like glass breaking towards the back of our property next to the apartments. We are going tomorrow and spending what's left of tax returns on a new shotgun, but please, any advice. Anything on game planning to remaining calm to what type of home defense we can do from here. Weve dealt with weird things over the past months of people going through our trash, breaking into our cars but not taking anything but our break away knives. Please, anything at all will help.

The problem with early release of jails.

    Posted: 04 Apr 2020 10:40 PM PDT

    https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-03-31/coronavirus-california-release-3500-inmates-prisons

Advocates that want to release "non-violent" criminals from jails do not seem to consider the risks and ramifications. When someone is arrested it's fairly common to plea the charges down so they can avoid longer prison sentences. 94% or more of criminal cases are plead down to lesser charges.

There's also the fact that someone can commit hundreds of crimes and might only get busted for shoplifting.

Home burglaries are another major problem. 75% of home burglaries in the U.S. occur when no one is home, when someone is home there is a 1 in 4 chance that there is some kind of violent crime committed by the perpetrator to the occupants. Now that everyone is quarantined the likelyhood of being assaulted skyrockets.
