What are your best practices for home security?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 09:54 AM PDT

Hi, this is my first post on this sub. I want to ask you all about home security in terms of best practices in general, not about a specific home security system (though I'm sure one would be in the best practices). What are some low hanging fruit that most people who own basic homes could do that would have some immediate impact or benefit?

For example, I know people put up signs that say "Beware of Dog", they light up areas outside of their house, they get weapons, they implement cameras and security alert systems, they maybe have specific types of locks.

What are 2-5 things that you know of or do that give you a sense of security?

    Thank you!

    Lock Picking

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 05:41 PM PDT

How likely a vector is lockpicking for people getting into one's home? I have a very heavily reinforced strikeplate, but if a Schlage B60 deadbolt can be picked easily, it's kind of beside the point, no?

    Mail theft

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 08:04 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I have suspicions someone is stealing my mail from my post box. I was thinking about putting a little wireless security camera in the post box

What ideas do people have to achieve this. It's worth mentioning this is a communal post box with about 20 individual boxes

I know power is going to be an issue

    Thanks

Lorex home mobile app connectivity issues

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 04:38 PM PDT

Got the Lorex 4k UHD system from costco. Hooked up box to switch. Hooked up camera to POE switch. Everything works great. I was even able to get the mobile app to work- at home and away.

One day camera 3 and 4 go offline and camera 1 is duplicated- My mobile app shows my four cameras as 1,2, 1,1. Strange. I reboot. no change. I reset to factory and all 4 cameras are now back to normal. I have to remove the system from the mobile app and re-register it. On the mobile app I am able to enter the device id and it then asks me for the password (so obviously the app is able to connect to the box). I enter password and then it kicks out saying connection failed!! This from the same network- all at home. I am able to connect to the box from a web browser by using the local ip address.

Lorex was unable to help- just went through the usual factory reboot, app delete and reinstall.

Does the app talk directly to the box? or does it talk through a lorex server?

    thoughts?

I'm thinking the only reasonable solution is to get a new box and see if that works.

Video Doorbell that uploads footage to some local PC?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 02:52 PM PDT

Hi! I'm interested in purchasing a smart doorbell, but for longetivity's sake, I don't like the idea of cloud storage being involved because any provider could neuter their storage and then my doorbell is worthless.

I'm very new to home security, but i'm looking for a fairly robust product in a moderate price range ( no more than 300 ) that can upload footage to local storage somewhere on my network.

Does such a product exist? Thanks!
