[CONTEST] The "1,000,000 Subscribers" date guessing game

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 07:09 PM PST

So, here's the deal – we are close to 1 million subscribers and want to mark this with some event that we'll forget about by the summer.

PREDICT the day we will reach this milestone!

We have about 886,000 subs at the time of this posting. I pulled our subscriber numbers from the past few weeks from which to run your AI-enhanced machine learning prediction models. Good luck!

    RULES:
    1. Only one entry per redditor
    2. User must have posted or commented at least once in /r/homeimprovement before the datestamp on this post.
    3. Entries will be open until Thursday, February 6 at about noon Central Time (-6 GMT).
    4. Any edited posts will be removed. Your first guess is your only guess.

    PRIZES:
    1. A futuristic, 3d printed trophy printed by our badass mod, /u/0110010001100010. Click here for a picture.
    2. No reddit coins, bronze, or platinum of any kind.
    3. A $150 gift card to Home Depot
    4. Some sweet, sweet karma.

The gift card will be from Amazon, Home Depot, Lowe's, or a some reasonable alternative – we don't want to exclude our international redditors either. Should multiple people select that date, a random drawing will be held. Donations were made on behalf of the mods to provide the prizes. If anyone wants to contribute to a larger prize pool, please PM the mods!

We'll try and keep the post stickied until we hit the mark. Thank you all for helping make this such a great place for us to respectfully love (or hate) our homes.

    Sincerely, /u/dapeche

Update to: Refrigerator making popping sound every 12 seconds

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 10:13 AM PST

    First post here

After unscrewing some plastic covers, I found the wiring harness for the air damper, unplugged it, and verified that it was the piece that was making that noise every 12 seconds.

I ordered a new one, and installed it without too much trouble. I wasn't sure how long it would take so I got all the food out, and took that opportunity to clean the fridge and freezer. Actual install took 10 minutes, it took me probably 2 hours in total, but it needed cleaned anyway.

The noise is gone, ice maker still works just fine :)

What the heck is this thing in my friends ceiling?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 07:02 PM PST

My friend just bought a house and noticed some sort of electrical component mounted in the ceiling. He goes to remove it, but decides not to proceed because he can't tell what it is. Does anyone have a clue? We've been wracking our brains over this.

He lives in the northern US. See the picture here

Beginner DIY tilers, how did your first floor go?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 07:16 AM PST

Assuming porcelain or ceramic tile, and not small mosaic tile, which I heard is a lot more difficult.

    Few questions:

    1. Was it difficult to get everything flat and even?

    2. How big were the tiles?

    3. Any cracks afterwards due to poor thin set applications? what about leaks?

    4. What were the most difficult parts? Any unexpected issues came up?

    5. How often did you have to lift the tiles up before thinset is dry, and readjust?

Just curious if it is something I should try, or just better to hire a pro.

PS. What about backsplashes and walls?

    Thanks.

How to convert a toilet drain to a shower.

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 03:28 AM PST

I have a spot that used to have a toilet and I would like to put in a shower. It's on a concrete slab, so i can't do anything under the floor to change it. Could I build up a floor in for the shower to make room for an S-trap and use a 3-2 bushing to reduce into the toilet drain? If so, how high should I go and how much drop should I shoot for between the top of the S and the bottom of the shower pan?

This is for a hunting camp so it doesn't need to be permitted but I'd like to do it mostly right.

Reasons I Hate Mr. Previous Owner: Episode #316, Premeditated Paint Fraud

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 11:06 AM PST

Previous trim paint looks ok. Light sanding, dusting, and a new coat. Use painters tape to help compensate for the wavy 80-year-old walls and re-re-re-caulked trim. Paint the wall edge, and remove painters ta--

    GODAMMIT

Mr. Previous Owner, failed to properly prepare before painting the previous coat. The tape peels off his paint, taking my paint with it. This is room number 3 if 12 that I hope to repaint.

Has anyone ever installed a pet door?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 07:40 AM PST

I am interested in adding a pet door to my garage entrance, so I can get my litter box out of the house. Do you think there will be any issue with losing heating/cooling once the pet door is installed?

Are there any brands I should look out for? I appreciate the advice!

Security windows bars that are not sore on the eyes?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 08:29 PM PST

I have a home with white vinyl siding all the way around. I figure that white security iron bars would be best...

Can anyone suggest a style of bars that are easy on the eyes at least somewhat? Iron bars on windows are generally unattractive...

I'm not sure that security bad designs vary all that much to begin with. But if anyone has suggestions for designs that are more attractive than the average straight vertical security bars, that would be great (if such designs even exist).

    Thanks in advance!

Ikea sink top overflow not draining

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 10:33 PM PST

I have an ikea vanity & sink top and the overflow doesn't drain. Which means there's stagnant water in there and it stinks. I try to flush it out every once in a while, but this should not be an issue! We bought the same sink to put in our other bathroom & im regretting that right now.

Has anyone had this issue before or is it normal? Any ideas? The sink is level, so it's not that.

On mobile not sure how to add pictures

Please help I have terrible neighbors

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 10:26 PM PST

I live in a single house. The new neighbors moved in and I lost my peace and quiet. It's shocking to me that I can hear them inside my house. The college kids that live in the house talk extremely loud. Sometimes I step outside and go to the side of the house where our shared fence sits and I can hear everything perfectly. I'm sure the soundproofing, the materials of walls and windows are poor in the two houses. Unfortunately I can't do anything to their house but is there anything I can do inside my house to help with this?

Is it normal to hear my neighbors inside my house when I have all the windows closed? Do I need to get new windows? Will it help with sound?

Bathroom renovation. Shower water no longer as hot as it used to be!

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 09:33 PM PST

We had our bathroom re done by some random dude my cousin knows. I didn't trust it but we went with it anyway. The shower was moved from one side of the bathroom to the other, and now the water is a very lukewarm almost cold temperature. Hot steamy water is suddenly gone. How and why has this happened ? And is this something I can fix myself? The thing to turn the shower on is crooked, could this be why?

Need advice on replacing water supply valve

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 09:25 PM PST

I just installed a bidet in my bathroom with both cold and hot water hookups. I now have a slow drip from both the hot water supply valve under my sink as well as the line behind the toilet for cold water.

I would like to replace the cold water supply valve first as it is the worse off of the two. Can I just use a torch to get the old valve off and replace it with a new one that is the "gator bite" style?

    valve pics

Also not sure how I could use a torch in there w/o melting and lighting things on fire 😨

Has anyone bought a kitchen sink from Wayfair or Amazon?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 05:31 PM PST

We are remodeling our kitchen and looking at kitchen sinks. We have our eyes on a granite under mount sink. Curious if anyone has bought something like this from Wayfair or amazon because they're less than half the price from Lowe's or Home Depot. Reviews tend to be pretty good but I know reviews can be bought, so just wondering if anyone here has real experience with this.

Benefits of an epoxy floor? Is it something an amateur should DIY?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 06:24 PM PST

We just bought a new home and some of the neighbors mentioned they were going to epoxy their garage. That sounds interesting but curious what the benefit of doing so would be?

Additionally I poked around briefly to see what DIY methods there are and they seem multi step (lots of cleaning/prepping, primer, epoxy, speckles(?)). I like to think I'm handy, but is this one of those things that I should leave to a professional?

When it comes to hiring someone, is it important that I find someone licensed and bonded?

    Thanks a mil in advance!

Drilling into circuit breaker on the other side

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 08:34 PM PST

    Hey all,

I'm trying to hang some shelfs, and I'm drilling holes for the drywall anchors. One hole was easy, but the other one hit what I thought was a wood stud. It turns out that I hit the metal back of my circuit breaker in the room on the other side. So powering through it is not an option. What are my options? I have about 7/8" drilled before I hit the metal. I would prefer not to have to move where I hang it, but if I have to, I'll just patch the holes and hang the shelves elsewhere and hang a painting or something.

What kind of circuit is this?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 04:32 AM PST

My wife and I were replacing the outlet behind our fridge in the kitchen and we were left dumbfounded by this circuit. Can someone offer an explanation? House was built in the 1980s.

Some reports online seem to indicate that this was done as an easy way to GFCI the kitchen, or something...

Crummy diagram here - Edited with labels now. <- This is not right. I think I misunderstood. Sorry again for the crumminess.

Note: I did not draw the ground wires but they are there. Also, the hot-tab is still in place and has not been removed. We ended up replacing the outlet using the same exact connections and things seem fine. But we were really hoping to understand what the heck this thing is supposed to do and why it was hooked up this way.

Edit Thanks to u/mrBill12 it appears we have a multi wire branch circuit. I'll contact an electrician if more work needs to be done I think. Thank you for your help.

Edit 2 - Since people were asking here is what it looks like in the box: https://imgur.com/a/OI9FyUs

I think I have a much better understanding of what is going on. So at the breaker panel circuit #12 is the attached to the red wire. The black wire is circuit #10. As was pointed out, this is to save on wiring from the panel.

is it weird/invasive to put cameras around the perimiter of my house in suburb ?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 08:50 AM PST

my house is right near the property line, The house next door is set back but they recently started farming against my house. I have caught my neighbour ease dropping on my cover stations ( I think) and he sometime mentions things I said to someone in my yard. I was thinking of installing cameras on the front of my house anyways as there is lots of break ins going on but also though of having a camera go down back to wear he possibly ease drops.I also don't want to be a creep myself, but I am thinking I might have the right to keep an eye on my house side, especially if it doesn't view his property. What do you think about this. I don't want to talk to him about it he is a jerk, maybe the camera could be hidden or something ? I don't know.

    Cat ruined Basement

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 09:18 AM PST

My roommate as of July 2019 has a cat that has behavioral peeing and pooping problems. I also have a cat. Since her moving in last July, the basement has become disgusting with cat urine and feces on the concrete floor(the basement is unfinished). the cat has also peed and pooped on certain storage items. I am planning to move out when the lease is up. I want to get the basement cleaned up so it doesn't smell down there anymore when I do laundry and the smells don't come through the heating and AC anymore. I am planning to have a junk removal service come remove the junk i don't want after sorting through it. How do you all recommend going about cleaning and detailing the concrete floors/unfinished basement? I will go pick up all the supplies suggested. TIA.

Quick question - what does "cover all sides of insulation" mean?

    Posted: 03 Mar 2020 07:26 PM PST

We are finishing our basement and ran into this requirement. The code says we must "cover all sides of insulation" in our mechanical room. Do any of you know what we have to cover it with? Does it have to be drywall? Or can we just put the paper side of the insulation facing into the mechanical room?

    Thanks!
