Vivint to Pay $3.2M for Allegedly Making False Statements to Federally Insured Bank

The allegations state that Vivint employees made false statements to secure financing for customers' purchases of Vivint's home monitoring products.

WASHINGTON — Vivint Smart Home has found itself in hot water yet again, this time with the federal government. The Department of Justice has announced that the smart home and security provider has agreed to pay the United States $3.2 million to resolve allegations under the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery, and Enforcement Act of 1989 (FIRREA).

Hardwired alarm, good monitoring companies or keep ring?

    Alarm monitoring company recommendations

Any good and honest alarm monitoring companies?

Had ADT and now ring security however older alarm is hardwired. Was paying ADT $30 so any other options would be great. Ring seems nice but if I can use hardwired that would be ideal.

Keeping both GE concord 4 keypads would be nice than having to remove and place ring or have dead keypads since unplugged (couldn't get the backup battery alert to go away lol, I liked the clock though!)

Home Security system + Door Cam

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 03:23 PM PST

    Hello!
I'm trying to setup a house with a contract free home security system.
We already have 4 dahua cams for exteriors. But we'd like set up a video doorbell and sensors on windows and main access areas. Currently it seems that Simplisafe might be our choice. It's doorbell + 5 piece set.

Does anyone on here have experience with either of those? Do you recommend 'em?
We landed on Simplisafe bc of this subreddit. So any more info would be appreciated.

Since we'll be using the system for my father in law he lives outside the US so the monitoring is not exactly needed or wanted. Just the accessibility on phones so he can get alerts if any one opens the main access.

    What do you guys suggest?

    System Sensor 5601P

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 03:17 PM PST

I have a couple System Sensor 5601P sensors that I will be adding to a vista 20P. The instructions show the ROR is resettable but the fixed sensor is not. There is a collector drop to make the faulted unit easily identified. I searched and cannot find what this looks like. Rather than sacrifice a sensor, does anyone have a picture of a 5600 series that has activated?

" The 5600 series also provides a post-activation indicator in the form of a collector. When the detector is activated, the collector drops from the unit, making it easy to identify the unit in alarm. "

any alternatives to the Qolsys IQ 2 Panel?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:03 AM PST

my new home comes with a Qolsys IQ 2 Panel and it is not compatible with some devices i want to use. my home builder is paying for 3 years of alarm.com but i don't really care about the app and i don't mind using separate apps to control my devices (nest, garage door opener, smart locks, cameras, etc).

I am looking for an alternative to the Qolsys IQ Panel, that is compatible with more devices (my smart locks and thermostat are not z wave compatible)

    thanks in advance!

    budget smart DIY home surveillance

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 01:14 PM PST

Hey inspired of this video: here, I'm thinking of creating a two part surveillance system.
First part, is a always one system: One camera that 24/7 is filming the front door.

The second system is bluetooth active, so when my own and my GF's phones leaves the wifi, the other 4-6 cameras will turn on. This way the system will always turn on, when we leave our home and turn off, when we return home.

My biggest issue, is that I've never taken on a project like this before, so I hope that someone can help.

    1. Can anyone point me towards good webcams to use for this purpos, and is there any models, that has nightmode?
    2. Does anyone have any suggestions on, how I can get the system to turn on, when X happens to the wifi?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 11:03 AM PST

recently upgraded to a newer model. the one before was over 8yrs old. it still works and all, so was wondering what everyone does with their old ring. can you mount it and have it work with a 3rd party SW like blue iris or something as a cam?

Vista 20p system in new home

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 06:31 AM PST

Hello, I recently moved into a new home. I don't plan on continuing with an ADT contract, but will be installing a home system (such as one with an EVL4 component)

    https://imgur.com/a/gvrKWr1

    A few questions:

    1. Where is power originating from for the Vista 20p panel? I know that it has a battery connected to it, but I don't see a Honeywell 1321 AC Transformer.
    2. I assume that my 3G3070 system is no longer needed?

Any other thoughts or recommendations that folks have?

    Thanks

    -Dan

Good security system WITHOUT cloud connection

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 01:58 AM PST

We have one now that's hard to configure, debug and make changes. We have two areas, the main house and a detached garage. I really don't want our alarm system cloud connected, but I want seperate PIN per user and either voip or LTE alarm reporting. I'm fine with it being network accessible from the LAN or even one-time accessible from the cloud while configuring, but I don't want something that doesn't work without a connection to some external server.

Is there anything that hits that sweet spot of being user friendly without requiring a constant connection to "other peoples servers"?

ADT--- not able to use existing equipment?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 08:47 AM PST

I have been an ADT customer for over 13 years. When I first bought my home I had ADT installed and did not have any issues with the company for 10 years. When I went to move 3 years ago, I was told that none of my equipment was compatible (which was fair as it was 10 years old) and that in the new rental I was moving into they would recommend equipment that was mobile and not hardwired in so that I did not damage the property, and it would be easy to take with me when I left. I purchased 2 outdoor cameras, 1 indoor camera, 1 glass break, 1 fire alarm, 1 wifi extender, 1 motion sensor, and a slew of other sensors-- the total came to a staggering $900 but it was worth it because it was updated equipment that I could take with me to my next location......I thought. For the past 3 years we have had nothing but issues with the cameras not working and constantly going offline. When we call ADT we just get told that it will cost to send a technician out and to fix it ourselves by unplugging it and re-plugging it.

We just found out that we need to be out of our current home in 2 weeks. We found a rental from an active duty military; we could be at the home for 1-3 years depending on his deployment and when he will return home so it is very uncertain of how long it will be until we will need to move again. Today I called ADT schedule a time to get service transferred to my new home. I was told that none of my equipment would be able to be reused and that "ADT never reuses equipment". They stated that I could either leave it at the residence for the next person (which I cannot do as it is not hardwired in so the system literally just plugs into an outlet and sits on a table and we are not allowed to leave any personal belongings behind) or throw it away. She suggested that I throw away $900 worth of equipment that I just purchased a few years ago.

After talking to her for some time trying to find a solution I was told that they had a great deal with using my "credits" that I have from being such a loyal customer. I would be able to pay $56 per month and get all new equipment, AND we wouldnt have to pay for it all up front like last time! All I needed to do was give her my social security number to run a credit check. A credit check? For what? Well since we are not paying for the equipment up front, they have to make sure that we are going to be able to pay it in the future. It finally hits me at that point that they are trying to lock me into some type of contract where I will be making payments on the equipment over a period of time. Yes she agrees that is the way that it works. How much time will it take me to pay off this I ask---60 months. 5 years. They wanted to scam me into unknowingly signing a contact for 5 years of service at a home that I will most definitely not be living at for 5 years. She tries to assure me that this is fine because if I move I can always get ADT there too and just transfer my service (which is what I am currently trying to do with all this drama). I point out the obvious-- if in the case that I move prior to the 5 year contract being up, wouldnt I then be responsible for paying off this contract AND paying for new equipment at the new location as well-- yes, that is correct she says. In that case, we do not want to purchase new equipment for the new home and will be canceling our services-- which of course there is a $110 fee for early termination of our current contract.

Does this seem legit to you guys? ADT forces you into an incredibly long contract now by "bundling" your equipment over a period of time-- AND you cannot keep or reuse said equipment if you move?

    Arlo Security Systems

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 03:56 AM PST

We are looking into the Arlo Pro3 system and Arlo Floodlight Cameras, however, I want to position them up high and it will be a pain to change the batteries every time they die. I've seen that you can purchase a magnetic plug for the cameras with a 25ft cable to keep them plugged into a mains power socket- what I want to know is, is there any way I can have them wired them directly into the mains power of the house rather than have them plugged into a wall socket?

    Texecom connect recipe limitations

    Posted: 08 Jan 2021 07:19 AM PST

Hi all, wondering if anybody could give me a clue about using Texecoms connect "recipes" to do anything outside of turning on/off the texecom branded plugs. Will I be able to use this to trigger something like Alexa to turn on/off lighting from another smart source? Or is it purely fixed to "control 4"'s API at the moment? I know you can also throw in a relay module into the mix directly from the main alarm, but short of rewiring the lighting in the house I'm not sure how useful this would be. Anyone tried this?
