    Home security: Recommended POE camera?

    Home security: Recommended POE camera?

    Recommended POE camera?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 01:38 PM PST

    Hi all,

I just moved into a condo and while there are security guards, I just like the idea of having a camera rolling.

My condo is small 700sq feet so I think I just need one in a corner in the living room. It can see the front door from that angle, which is really all I need. I have a server running 24.7 with a POE switch so ideally I'd like to use my existing resources. I can spin up a VM if the camera needs special software.

I'd like to keep my budget under 100 for the camera itself. I have lots of storage available in my server (TB's). Rotates the feed so it'll keep like a weeks worth of feed at a time. Obviously everything internal, no cloud needed or wanted. I'd like a mobile app or site I can log into locally, I can use a VPN to access it remotely.

Anything like that in the market? Thanks!

How should I deal with my new build house and security system?

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 10:37 AM PST

I built a house this year through a residence builder company. The builder company relied on a contractor for the electrical all around the house. By all the electrical, I mean plugs, switches, boxes, light bulbs, ethernet cables, and whatnot. This contractor is HomePro and they also have security system services. They installed a Honeywell system and the security system is wired. During HomePro's demo for their work in my house, the HomePro salesman tried to up-sell me with a bunch of other hardware he recommended me and he was overpricing everything for at least three times the original price.

They haven't got my security system ready for use. A HomePro technician must come to my house and do whatever has to be done to get the security system up and running. Everything is installed and for some reason, the technicians say it will take two hours to get things running up. I am getting fed up with the same salesman and the technicians coming late on the appointment saying they need two hours.

Enough of my rant, now it is my moment to ask what should I do for my home security system. I already have security cameras, a google nest doorbell, Honeywell security system wired around the house. I am missing window sensors, firefighter, and glass breaker.

HomePro services are $39.99USD with a contract. I don't want a contract and I don't want to pay $39.99USD. I already not like their client-facing employees. I saw in this subreddit about Adobe, but it is too expensive at the moment. I also notice SimpliSafe is opinionated on this subreddit.

    What should I do?

Should I keep the hardware and find some other security services provider?

Should I read the programming manual and set it up myself? (I am a Software Engineer, maybe I can figure it out? idk)

Should I replace it and get a Security System like SimpliSafe, Ring, or some other stuff?

    tl;dr

Not really liking HomePro security service client-facing people, there is a contract, and there is a 39.99 charge. I want to change to another service or even get my own DIY security system. Paying less than 29.99 for 24/7 monitoring would be great if there is no contract.

    Edit:

The contractor installed Honewell Ademco Vista Series. I think it is the 15p-sia

The worth of a piece of mind

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 07:43 AM PST

If you're on the fence about getting cameras or adding to your home defense just take the leap. I've been wanting cameras for a long time. Nothing has ever happened but I didn't want something to happen before needing it. My wife didn't want them, she just didn't think they are necessary.

I got a great deal on Black Friday for a Eufy camera system. I set it all up in 1 afternoon. I have slept so much better. It's like a weight lifted off of my shoulders. Nothing has happened but I know my home and my family are protected and I feel safer going to sleep or leaving the house now.

Honeywell 6150 and adding new user codes

    Posted: 18 Dec 2020 09:21 AM PST

I followed the instructions to add a new user code to our Honeywell 6150 here at my work. It beeps once after I go through the sequence to add him on the system. I had the user try it, but it doesn't work.

I found something on Google to test to verify if the master code is legit, and it is. Then I did my code + OFF to test if the code was in the system, and it beeps indicating that the code is good. When I do the new user's code + OFF, it doesn't beep.

    What could be the issue?

    Front Door cctv placement ideas

    Hi everyone!

Recently bought a tapo camera that I want to install on my front door so I can see who's ringing the bell&cover the porch area in general. What would you say is the best way to go about it placement-wise?So far I've thought of mounting it on the highest point underneath the arch which is roughly 7.5 feet tall(red dot on pic). What do you think? Thanks!
