    Hidden door sensors?

I need to find some kind of sensor that's not easily visible that can send a command to my computer whenever a door is opened. Does anyone have any ideas?

Foscam 8918 - easiest motion detection and upload

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 09:53 PM PST

I need to keep an eye on my dog while I'm gone. I don't want to spend money if I don't have to.

I have a Foscam 8918 that was a baby monitor. Baby is no longer a baby and doesn't need video monitoring. Foscam works great for real-time monitoring.

What's the easiest way to record when motion is detected? Ideally the recordings would be accessible over the internet, but stored at the house would be ok. There's no onboard storage on the camera. The web interface will let me email or ftp a still image, but no video files. My phone app can do it, but I don't want to run the phone app all the time. I have Dropbox and an ftp account available.

    Built in tech/ alarm.com

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 01:34 PM PST

Hi! Preconstruction house comes with alarm.com optional security equipment but it is $25 CAD a month on 2 year contract. Is alarm.com stuff good? Can I use it later if I stop the contract? I am second guessing all the DIY stuff like frontpoint abode etc.

Any recomendations on a camera which is motion activated and uploads the thing it detects to a server, when triggered?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 07:13 AM PST

Like, if I were to enter your home the camera would detect my movement and start uploading online. I see the camera and react by trying to destroy it or find it's local storage but it's already too late because at least some of the footage has already been uploaded

Standalone indoor wifi camera that can be monitored via browser (Chrome, new Edge, FF, etc)

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 08:20 AM PST

Looking for simple wifi cameras that have a SD slot and can be monitored via a PC web browser. Prefer they can be linked together so it's multi-window in my browser at the same time. I have some older Foscam cameras that are that way but they only work in IE with their old plug-in. Cameras are getting old and sketchy and I know IE going away is on the horizon. Seems everything now is either a NVR or cloud based or have no support for viewing other than their proprietary app.

    Vivint panel

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 08:20 AM PST

I need to take out the vivint panel that cosmetic with the house as I don't have codes. But the panel also controls the thermostat. Do I need a new thermostat if I were to disconnect the panel?

Video-only, local storage, remote access camera?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 06:22 AM PST

Hi all. I won't go into details but need to install a few indoor cameras for personal safety that pose the least risk to my own privacy if hacked. I'd primarily be using them to monitor for intruders while I am absent, or at night while I sleep. I thought local storage, no audio, motion detection recording. Turn off when I'm moving about the house. Alarm a bonus, I think. Any thoughts about the perfect combo system?! Thanks.

    Cove vs. SimpliSafe

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 06:10 AM PST

Last night, someone broke our window. They ran away, but it made me think I need to get a much better security system than what we have now. Right now, we have Kangaroo, which is an "affordable" security startup that I 100% would not recommend.

SimpliSafe seems like the way to go, but Cove has emerged as a strong potential contender, too.

We'd prefer to not spend a ton of money monthly, but want decent protection. Any thoughts/help? Literally have carts up for both sites now and trying to figure out what to buy.
