Thieves stole catalytic converter last night and vandalized property -- how to improve security?

Our neighborhood has been having problems recently, so to improve security I parked our car in the driveway under a Nest security camera.

Usually I have notifications turned off on my phone -- the night before last, I forgot to switch it off before going to bed and got woken up to some text messages, which was annoying. Last night I again forgot to turn off notifications. So at 3:30am I got a ping on the phone that woke me up...I just ignored it (thinking it's another random text / app notification) and went back to sleep. Then at 4:30 I kinda woke up again, and thought to check the phone. Notification was that camera was offline.

Then I saw the video -- car backs up into driveway, 4 masked people come out, cut out our converter, then back up to camera (walking backwards), and then cut the camera wire and took the camera. Called police, gave them footage, and they sent an alert out to the county since they're probably hitting more homes.

Obviously I'm rattled by this, and wondering how to beef up our security overall. One big question is for the cameras -- how do I get notified when there's a real robber / burglar and not my texts or other crap. Also if I get woken up by too many false alarms from the camera, I'll turn the thing off.

The newer Nest cameras have a locking plate, making it harder to cut the wire. Anyway please let me know if anyone has suggestions on effective alerts without too many false alarms.

    Thanks!

Defense & detection methods for hidden vehicle GPS trackers? (Like wrong sub, I know)

    Posted: 13 Dec 2020 02:34 PM PST

Likely wrong sub, so if you have a better suggestion, please comment it here.

My threat model changed abruptly today. I have a person in my life who suggested the idea of "bugging" my car.

I assume they meant put a GPS tracker on my car, but I guess it could also mean an in-cabin audio recorder.

Either way, what's the beat way to defend against this, or detect it, assuming they're able to successfully install something without my knowledge?

    Thanks

    HOME SECURITY

I currently have wyze pan and v2 indoors.. I want something good quality outside that can watch my driveway and maybe pick up a license plate. Max budget 200 other areas are covered by wyze inside home.

Has anyone in the UK had 3M security film fitted? How much did it cost? Was the installation straight-forward? I'm asking because I have no reference for what a good price is.

Also, is there anything available within the UK that's stronger?

Might have to live in car for a few weeks. How can I discourage break-ins and negative interactions?

I'm also a small woman so that's a potential factor in my safety unfortunately.

    How to get over anxiety

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 11:30 PM PST

    Hello,

Sometimes I forget to arm my alarm system or put my gun on my night stand. I wake up in the middle of the night with heavy anxiety and can't fall back asleep even if I do go get my gun or arm my alarm system.

For example, the other night I forgot to get my gun out of my safe and put it on my night stand before I sleep. It's usually part of my night time routine like brushing my teeth and showering. I was super tired that night and just crashed. Woke up at 3am with my heart beating at like 100 MPH and couldn't fall asleep again.

Some history: When I was young, my house was broken into at least twice a month, while living int he ghetto. Although I do live in a wealthy and gated neighborhood that has very low crime with decent neighbors, I guess I'm not over it or something.

Is there anything I can reasonably do that makes my house break-in-proof for peace of mind?

    Thanks

Good overview of what to look for in a small safe

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 07:32 PM PST

I thought these vids would be helpful for those looking for a good small safe for their home, as so much of the stuff at chain retailers is utter garbage in terms of security and reliability. (most can be opened effortlessly with common tools)

BosnianBill is a well known security researcher and lockpicker, and I would definitely give his vids a watch to understand more about security. This 3 part series of his is definitely what you should look for in a safe, first and foremost, having it rated for burglary by a reputable agency, and being of a good construction with locks that are actually secure.

Looks like part 3 hasn't been posted yet
