Justified concern or paranoia? Man living in his car near my new home. Long post but please read and put yourself in my shoes.

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 01:35 PM PST

TLDR; thought we bought the perfect home and turns out there's a man living in the woods 150 ft away across the ravine.

Just bought our dream home in a quiet neighborhood. Treeline to the rear. Double lot. Room to grow.

Behind me is a 20 acre lot of nothing but woods, ravine, and field. This was a huge selling point. No neighbors to the rear. Just trees and birds. Walk 30 paces out of my back yard and you hit the tree/property line. It's scenic.

Well, now that the trees have lost their leaves, you can see through to an apparent campground about 150ft away across the ravine. Neighbors have said the person "lives" there and pulled a gun on the previous homeowner over dumping leaves in the woods.

We've been told this person's family property and there used to be a home there that was torn down years and years ago. So, he has a legal right to be there (unless it's illegal to live on property without a dwelling? Not an expert.)

Now, I've been here three months and have seen a car over there sometimes (parked in a spot you can see regardless of foliage), but rational thought told me it was just someone checking on the property now and then (the lot has been for sale for many years). But sadly, the tree coverage was blocking the campsite and we are wondering the person is actually living in their car on the lot. Where they have been parking their truck would've been obscured during summer.

So, now for the next 6 months (until leaves return), when I open my back door to look at the beautiful woods, instead I'm staring at a man living in his car who apparently has territory issues worth pulling a gun on an 80 year old man (previous homeowner).

So, Reddit. Am I being too judgmental? Too paranoid?

Or, do I have some valid reasons to feel concerned for my families privacy and safety?

Thoughts on solutions or am I simply being worried for nothing? What would you do?

Home security upgrade from Amcrest IP3M-943B outdoor camera to Amcrest UltraHD 4K (8MP) POE camera

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 12:55 PM PST

Coming from a 3MP wifi camera, this 8MB (4K) POE camera brings in huge improvement both on the connectivity and quality of the image. I was relying on wifi with my old setup, and it is prone to connection issue, so I bite he bullet and change everything to POE, which it doesn't only give solid connection without any problem, plus it's cleaner from my setup as I don't have to put in a power adapter near my camera. As you can see from my setup, it's being mounted outdoor on a diy metal junction box, where the cat6 cable is being passed through metal conduit. The only additional setup I need to put in is a poe switch, which is a no brainer to setup.

Including the camera to my existing blue iris setup is smooth without any problem. Picture quality is an upgrade for sure, especially I'm having it in my garage area on the alley, the increased resolution allows me to see license plates from any cars easily, and at night time the picture quality is totally usable (I'll add picture soon).

The camera enclosure also gives a modern feeling with streamline design. One thing that I encounter as a small issue is the camera mount, which my old IP3M-943B mounts with 3 screws, which this 4k poe camera mounts on 4 screws. So I just had to drill new set of holes on my junction box, but no big deal.

I also notice the amcrest chrome extension no longer works, but may be it applies to both the 3MP wifi and this new 8MP POE camera.

In any case, I'd totally recommend this camera for those who wants to monitor your home outdoor with high resolution footage.

PS. hm... for some reason I can't post pictures to describe my sharing.

Do I need my neighbour's consent to film my property if it means that their house will be in the background? (Ontario, Canada)

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 05:29 PM PST

I am installing a new security camera system. Some of the cameras will capture my neighbour's property and houses. One example is the blind alley between my house and my side fence. This camera will be at the back of the house facing the street, so it will also be facing across the street to my neighbour's house. I am planning to set the cameras to ignore those areas, but I'm not sure how well I can do that without ending up creating a "blindspot" where a person's face would be in they came down the alley. Another situation is the driveway and front yard, these will likely show the houses across the street.

Do I need to explicitly get my neighbour's consent to film my yard if it means that their house will be in the background? If it's not required, is it considered common curtesy to let them know? If your neighbour came to you telling you this, would you be concerned or feel awkward? Would you feel good that there is another set of camera catching anything that goes on?

I'm asking for both the liability and the "good neighbour" aspect. I don't want to upset anyone, but I want to have cameras, particularly in that blind area. The blind area is a walkway about 5' wide, 45' long, between the house and a wood fence, where the bottom of first floor windows are about 9-10' off the ground and the basement windows are up high and not in a place that someone would be watching from the inside.

    Outdoor camera

I am dealing with issues on someone taking items from my fathers grave. I need to catch them on a hidden camera. The funeral home OK'd it. What are great hidden outdoor cameras?

    Thank you,

Question - Putting alternate security stickers pictures

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 12:54 AM PST

So, I've been reading that other people have been putting alternative security sign stickers or pictures up for potential intruders. The idea being that it will totally throw them off, and if they try and hack into you, it may set off an alarm, or at the very least, perhaps they will be unsuccessful and leave a trace.

Now, the question I have, is whether it is legal to falsely put out these signs, if you don't actually own someone else's product, under copyright laws, or the like?

Alternatively, I had just planned to put up some generic security signs. But some people were saying that intruders may assume they are fake.

    Vista 20p

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 05:13 PM PST

Looking for some help for diy help. I had an older version Honeywell and recently upgraded to the vista 20p w/ 6160rf. I had 6 wired sensors which I just plugged in to the new board using the correct diagram. Powered up and programmed the zones on the keypad. None of the zones worked it said faults for each one. Me being a noob assumed the resistors were bad, so I went ahead and tried a new resistor on the front door and it worked! However after I found my multimeter the old resistors were fine. That's my first issue. Second issue is the 6160 will not auto learn any wireless accessories. I manual put in the serial and assign the correct values and nothing will work. It just gives the check 100rf fault. Any advice? I think they sold me a bad board? Or a bad keypad? Idk

I've installed 4 other vista 20p's, all wireless accept for the exterior strobe and led by the front door to know if the system is armed. This is my first time doing wired
