I've had three object stolen outside in the past few weeks

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 01:43 PM PST

Awhile back my dog house was stolen, then after that my two pots in front of the house were stolen. But today I noticed that the window into my garage was broken and my lawn mower was stolen. I'm worried that whoever is doing this is just getting bolder and bolder and they are going to break into my home. What can I do to stop them?

Looking for recommendations for home CCTV

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 11:47 PM PST

Hi everyone, I've recently bought my first home and I'm looking at buying a good (but not super expensive because funds) home CCTV system. I'm in the UK if that helps recommendations. Ideally I'd be looking for a wired rather than wireless system that records to a harddrive and if possible a companion app for android. Might be a bit much to ask but I thought that here if anywhere would be best to ask.

Advice on upgrading to proper camera system

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 05:29 PM PST

    How there,

I've currently got an Arlo Pro 3 system that I don't care for. I am in a narrow 2 story house and I want to move to wired cameras. I have decent storage at home - 2 24TB arrays with room to expand to one additional array, with only about half of the first array full. The machine running the arrays also has a Quadro P400 and 64GB of ram, so offloading onto a GPU is no problem. I've got a PFSense firewall, enterprise switches and can isolate the cameras on their own VLAN.

I was thinking that I could run Zoneminder in docker. But what cameras do I need? I would prefer something high resolution that works well at night, without breaking the bank (maybe 250/cam?). Do I need a dedicated NVR for this, in between the cameras and Zoneminder? I was reading a review of some Reolink cameras with auto detection and it suggested that full 4k was not available via ONVIF.

Any help appreciated here, also currently digging through search and googling.

Recommendation : Specialty Exterior Egress Door Lock Set(s)?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 10:06 AM PST

I'm looking for some advice / ideas on a lockset that will help with a semi-unique situation.

We have a family member who potentially could 'wander' out of the house unsafely without us knowing putting them at risk.

There are lots of products to 'secure' a door on the interior, but almost all of those then preclude a different family member who may already be outside of the house from gaining entry at all in many cases, let alone 'easily'.

Ideally, I'd like any family member wanting to come IN to NOT need to carry a: specialty Key, RFID Fob or smartphone (NFC) etc.

My unicorn scenario would be if there were punch buttons on BOTH sides of the set, either electronic or manual, that don't cost $300 each; or something more *like how some cabinet security things work, where a common magnet device can disable the interior 'blocker' as it were, but I know cabinet doors & exterior doors are significantly different.

Also, if this isn't a good forum for the question, I apologize, I really wasn't sure where to put this, but since it involves a self installation of a home improvement item...I thought I'd try here.

Looked over at an Alzheimer's sub since the security & wandering factor would seem to be a natural fit for that community, but that didn't seem like the right group based on posts I searched, so... here I am.

Thanks for any suggestions / ideas.

Advice on replacing a gemini keypad

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 03:55 PM PST

I need advice on replacing a gemini keypad. The buttons on my entrance keypad have been wearing down the past year where I have to press harder and harder and last week the whole thing crapped out where most of the buttons are not responsive.

I ordered a replaement off a website of the same exact model keypad (GEM-RP8) which came today.

My question is can I just switch all the wiring and be back up and running or does the keypad need reprogramming? I have no idea if the code is stored in the keypad or on the control panel board. (the control panel model is GEM-P801) Also I read about needing some user code, but I don't see anything written anywhere in the control panel box or the manual which is in the box also. The whole thing was installed alrwsy when I bought the house so no idea who the installer is.

Any help appreciated, complete novice here

    Wall Penetrations

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 09:31 AM PST

When penetrating the wall from my attic to my interior room with the cat5 cables to my NVR, do you recommend to just cut a hole and run the cables, or is it acceptable to install a multiport j-box and cover plate and then run short cat5 cables from the wall pate to the NVR. Does that cause an unacceptable signal loss or introduce an unacceptable opportunity for error?

    Thanks.

Honeywell contact sensors in cold climate

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 12:49 PM PST

Folks - are any of you guys seeing sensors show low battery this week? I'm in the northeast where we are seeing 5-20 degree temperatures and 4 of my contact sensors started showing low battery 3 days ago (entry door, back door, 2 garage doors). Is this normal in frigid conditions? It's not occurred to be me last 2 winters and the sensors have been in place only for 3 years. I also had 2 alarm break sensors go bad back-to-back last week and they sit indoors. I wonder if my honeywell 5310 panel is going bad

    Thanks

Dity af Arlo cams, they need a bath.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 11:18 AM PST

My Arlo cameras are horribly dirty. Every crack and crevice has dust / dirt (moved into a new construction with a dirt lot). There are also some mold spore-looking things present on their undersides.

Some of the dirt has crept into the battery compartment.

I want to thoroughly clean this thing, but I'm not to up on electronics-cleaning and I do not want to damage the camera (obviously). It needs scrubbing. Like- it's bad (so miss me with that "rub gently with a cloth").

    Tips?
