Home security: Just moved in to a rental. How can I make this sliding door more secure? The door is on the outside, so I can’t put in a broomstick as a stopper.

Trying to feel safer in my ground floor rental

    Posted: 08 Oct 2020 03:16 AM PDT

A situation happened last night that has now made me aware that I'm not in a great neighbourhood and I feel a bit nervous in my apartment. I just moved in last month and I live on the ground floor. I always have my door locked, windows closed and locked and blinds shut at night but I still feel anxious. I know I sound neurotic but I'm just hoping to get some advice on how to further secure everything. I don't intend on purchasing a camera or anything at the moment, but my main fear is the windows. Is there something I can do to them that doesn't involve replacing them completely (I really don't want to ask the landlord to get new windows since I'm such a new tenant). I plan on putting some thorny bushes and plants in front of most of the windows, and I do have a dog (but he's really small and hardly intimidating). I'm sure I'm over reacting but I just want to feel comfortable when I go to sleep at night. Thanks in advance

If you had to choose between the ones that Costco sells: Lorex, night owl, swann. Which one would you do?

Also if I wanted to buy my own cameras, and something that is powerful with night vision. What do you recommend?

    Garage door lock

    Posted: 07 Oct 2020 09:58 PM PDT

I have a Liftmaster 3850 garage door which doesnt seem to offer any ability to natively add a physical lock that engages after the door shuts. Is there any way to add something aftermarket to get this functionality, or do I have to buy an entirely new garage door unit? I'm trying to protect against breakins to the garage.

Need help deciding on outdoor cameras

    Hello Reddit

My boyfriend and I have lived in our house for a little over a year, and our landlord has recently offered to send us security cameras of our choice to monitor our home.

Before we met him or knew he wanted to do this for us, I invested in a very basic Simplisafe system but only use it for an indoor alarm system, basically I have sensors on the doors and that's it. I ordered their doorbell camera with the package and didn't realize until it arrived that we don't have doorbell wiring currently, and there was no way I could install it myself I tried to return it but they never sent me the info to do so. I digress.

We need a camera for our front porch, and a camera for the back of the house with a flood light of some type. Everything I have read online seems to point to the Arlo pro floodlight camera as being the best option for that. I want something that's very bright to deter people walking through the alley from coming into our yard, and I also want something that records continually, not only when it is triggered which is my understanding of how ring cameras work. Also I'd like to not support Amazon if I can. We have a Google home, which works with our iPhones, but that's the only smart "hub" we have.

As far as the front porch goes, I guess I wouldn't be opposed to having another lighted camera, as our porch light needs to be rewired and it's basically unusable at this point. I would love a simple doorbell camera, but again it would have to be wireless. And I would like to be able to have all the cameras on the same system.

TLDR; need a floodlight camera for the back yard, and doorbell/porch camera that does not require existing doorbell wiring (unless it's really easy to do ourselves but we don't even own a drill just a dremel) and I would like them to be on the same system/talk to each other/only need to check one app or way to monitor it myself. I want continual recording, not only when triggered.

If there's a glowingly obvious option I'm overlooking, please let me know. Otherwise, just recommendations on a floodlight camera and wireless doorbell camera.

    Thanks in advance
