Best home alarm for a rental apartment where we can't install wiring in the walls? Simplisafe?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 12:49 PM PDT

I live in a 6th floor rental apartment in NYC and would like a home alarm system. The only way anyone could get in really is via the front door and the window by the fire escape (unless they rappel down from the roof to other windows). Because we rent (not own), I don't think we can drill holes in the walls to install a wiring system for alarms unless the wiring is very simple and limited. I presume I can only use something like Simplisafe or Ring or Nest, but I know those have hacking issues. Not sure what my best option is. I am not very tech savvy or handy. Any ideas?

Any advice on a source for an in-ground safe room?

We're wanting to get quote for an in-ground saferoom that can be accessed by a floor hatch. Any suppliers for that? We're in the Midwest if that helps. I've looked around and found some flimsy plastic tornado shelters for maybe 3 people, and I've found giant bunkers for a family of 6, but I just want to quote a 10x10 concrete basement basically that can house my family if need be.

It's OK to install camera at low heights (2m/6.5ft) in fenced patio?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 01:33 AM PDT

I'm going to install 2 cameras in my patio.

I could install them at 2.6m/8.5ft height, however, at that height one pole of a pergola covers the top area of the fence, so if somebody starts climbing the fence, my cameras won't see them until AFTER they have jumped the fence.

If I install them at 2m/6.5ft, the camera angle can see the top part of the fence so it would see the head of somebody trying to climb as they start climbing it.

While I know that usually it's recommended to install cameras at out of reach heights, I was wondering if it's okay to install them at 2m in this case, since the patio is fenced and is somebody reaches the camera it has already trespassed and alarms/notifications, etc should have already started.

    Alternatives to flip lock?

    Posted: 18 Aug 2020 12:54 AM PDT

I've always been a big fan off the defender flip locks. However, my new place has really deep door jambs and the defender (any surface lock, really) won't work. Anyone have suggestions for some alternative door security that is more or less plug n play? I've already gotten a beefier strike plate and longer screws all around.

    Budget DIY Wired System

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 05:28 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Got stuck in a rabbit hole on here and now overwhelmed.

Moving into a new house soon, want a two camera setup (with possibly up to 4, but that's not an immediate priority). Want it to be wired (I like the reolink, is that a good/safe choice?), and to save locally but accessible remotely (if this just makes me much more vulnerable to hackers, then I can go without it) - so I guess an NVR.

I really don't know what brands to trust because of how much I've read in the past of Chinese tech/hackers having backdoors to cameras, so some knowledge on that would be appreciated too.

Should I just buy all reolink (2 cameras and an NVR?) or are there better alternatives out there? I've also seen blue iris which I thought was really intriguing, is that needed?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2020 06:32 PM PDT

I already own a 100TB+ Synology 1817+ that is underused. I want to install a great quality camera over my driveway. POE is preferrable nut I have access to AC. A car was stolen out of my culdusac the other day so thats who im tryig to catch. Good nightvision is essential. Integration with tiny cam pro would be a plus as I have mounted a hd fire10 on the wall to show the video from my wyze cams in realtime My budget is around $300 for just the camera. Thanks in advance.
