Home security: Simple recording system to protect my bees

Simple recording system to protect my bees

    Posted: 28 May 2020 07:32 PM PDT

    Hi,

Long story short: I have bees fully in accordance with local law, and I have reason to believe that, after numerous failed attempts to remove my bees (including calling law enforcement), new neighbors may attempt to attempt to spread chemicals on/near my yard to attempt to kill off the bees.

I am looking for a simple system (can be standalone or online) that I can use to monitor my back and side yards. It'll need to be continuous recording as it wouldn't be something noticed the same day. I'm open to cloud-based setups (actually preferred for ease of setup), but ideally at an entry-level price. Might be asking too much, so please set me straight if so.

    Thanks!

Good strategies to keep unknown people off our property?

    Posted: 29 May 2020 02:05 AM PDT

Moved into a small house in town. I work a block away and there is a lot of theft/vandalism/suspicious activity in this neighborhood. Some of it is gang related. It is next to some low income apartments and a former immigrant refuge so plenty of people walking around because no car/the retail stores in the area and bus stops/major road. Homeowner is family, we have a link fence up in the backyard and he insists keeping the grill chained to the deck and covered the garage window when they did their last install of siding, and peephole has been scratched for context. It's the neighborhood.

House was vacant for a month while they were in and out fixing it up. Chairs moved around outside on the back deck from previous day our first week here which notified us the motion floodlight was switched off. That might have just been wind, but almost certain they were all stacked nice and the next day one was laying down on its front right in front of the sliding door.

There has never been a break in here with the single family member who lived here and worked mostly nights. 3 of us live here now and I'm just trying to be extra cautious. I'm the one who's the most concerned of us all, yet I'm the one with the most previous information on the hood.

Id like to get a cage for the sliding door because that room is now a bedroom and I feel is the biggest opportunity to be lifted off its tracks or something and is the only legit thing to be very worried about aside from beefing up the windows. I also want some stick on alarms for the windows and cameras until we feel a need and can afford going through a company

Priority feels like strongly discouraging people to stay away. We have blackout curtains yet leave front porch light on and a light on inside, 2-3 vehicles parked outside most nights, it's a corner lot so most of the house has street exposure, dark side has no windows. So already id think that would be cause enough to not mess with the property but I'm just paranoid any little noise I hear outside. I know cameras can help assist deterring people casing the residence, I want a fake ADT sign because I see other neighbors with them too. Not too keen on adopting a dog but maybe if something happens I'll go that route

Anything I'm missing that could be a simple set up for (mostly) my peace of mind? Anything I should work towards getting?

Secure my studio while I’m not here

    Posted: 29 May 2020 01:41 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

I was looking for a simple indoor camera that would record and send me a notifications while I'm not at home if it sees something.

I'v looked at different cameras and manufactures, it seems that you either pay for a subscription or go full self hosted. Do you know of a good product in the middle point between usability and price ?

I would like the notification being sent using the cloud and not hosting everything on my own but I don't want a camera stuck to a specific app that will usually drop support in a year.

Thank you for your help :)

Looking for a security camera for my vacation home (without internet connection)

    Posted: 29 May 2020 01:21 AM PDT

Hello. My family and I have a vacation home in Cuba that was just robbed while we were not there so we are looking into buying security cameras. we will not be able to view live footage since there is no internet connection there. If I understand correctly, we need cameras hooked up to a DVR that we can then view later on a monitor via HDMI or vga. We would need to have it recording 24/7 so this would obviously eat up the memory of the DVR rather quickly. Is it even realistic to find a system with sufficient memory to handle this? We wouldn't mind if it automatically replaces the old footage with new footage as long as it is constantly filming new footage. We have a family member down there that can check the footage if needed.

Does anyone have recommendations for such a camera system? I live in Canada right now so if you have any Canadian links that would be very much appreciated! Thanks

Help Finding Info on WD ReadyView cameras and system or recommendations

    Posted: 29 May 2020 12:46 AM PDT

I need some help finding information on WD readyview cameras and system, I am interested in buying the cheap 2 mp camera version to start and expand to the 4 mp ones later on but I cannot for the life of me find any clear videos or picture in how the camera recordings look. https://shop.westerndigital.com/products/surveillance/wd-readyview-surveillance-system#WDBULT0020HWT-HESN for reference. If this system is unknown then any recommendations on PoE NVR camera systems under $300? I Appreciate any help.

Cameras are for home security as my house property has been robbed from plenty of times over the years and only 1 attempted break in recently while on vacation. Medium sized home, outside temperature can get up to 103 on bad summer days.

    High-end Camera Questions

    Posted: 29 May 2020 12:32 AM PDT

I'm looking for a higher end security camera system and was looking for a few suggestions. My budget is around $3,000. I'd like to get 8 4K@30FPS POE cameras with the option to expand up to 16 channels and the ability to store the video at 4K@30FPS.

I'd really appreciate camera suggestions and options for the NVR. I also need to be able to get motion notifications on my iPhone.

I'm pretty tech savy so something more DIY for the NVR would be fine too.

    Thanks a ton

Ring, Nest, SimpliSafe and eight other manufacturers of internet-connected doorbell and security cameras have been alerted to "systemic design flaws" discovered by Florida Tech computer science student Blake Janes.

No need to worry about intruders, just criminals extorting you by threatening to release intimate footage.

Realink Security System, still worth buying?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 04:08 PM PDT

EDIT: Typo in title, I meant Reolink.

There's a few of these posts around, but they're all pretty outdated. I'm looking for a security system for my local church that would ideally consist of about 8 cameras ( 4 outdoor / 4 indoor) for < $1K. PoE is basically a must as is the ability for several users to remotely monitor the cameras if needed.

I see two options: full set w/ NVR like https://www.amazon.com/Security-8-Channel-Surveillance-Recording-RLK8-800B4/dp/B07K734ZTW ) OR buying the cameras separately and setting up something like Blue Iris on a PC. From what I understand, BI requires multiple licenses (one on the server side, and one for each client that will be used for remote monitoring, which will get pretty expensive). On the other hand, I don't know if these NVRs are very capable at all and worth getting. I do like that NVRs are an AIO solution that come with their own software / mobile app so less work to do on setting it up.

I thought about going really cheap just to try out and setting up a bunch of Wyze cams with Blue Iris but those cameras are not really made for this and obviously Wifi only w/ no PoE (though PoE injectors could be used).

Any help would be appreciated, please let me know if I should be looking at other alternatives as well.

New Home - Existing ADT Not Sure What To Do

    Posted: 28 May 2020 03:50 PM PDT

We just purchased a home with ADT. Looking for something that is easy to install and use. I'm not trying to go very DIY, looking for an existing ecosystem that I can adopt. I have quite a few existing Nest non security products and typically like their stuff. ADT vs Nest vs Ring.

ADT has quoted me new panels and upgrading anything in the house for $50/month on a 2 year (no setup/no equipment charge). From what I can tell I'd be looking at $500'ish equipment on Nest or $300 on Ring.

TCO on Nest and ADT over 2 years looks equal, year 3 Nest wins. TCO for Ring crosses over at about the 14 month mark vs ADT.

Given that I already have all this ADT stuff all over the house does it make sense to just activate ADT?

Should I pull that stuff down and go with Nest or Ring?

Outdoor cam that will reconnect if wifi/power goes out shortly?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 07:34 PM PDT

I am looking for a outdoor camera for my cottage, sometimes I'm away for 1-2 months at a time.

I was going to try out a cheap amazon wifi camera, but it seems lots of them when disconnected from wifi, need to be re-setup again in person.

I have a generator and if power goes out it would only be for less than a minute, a few mins for the wifi to turn back on.

Any recommendations on a wifi outdoor camera that would automatically reconnect if power/wifi goes out?

    Posted: 28 May 2020 09:43 AM PDT

Are there any good home security systems you can get that don't have a monthly fee? Like I just want the doorbell camera and a solid front and back door lock but I don't want adt or Vivint or any of that. Any good suggestions?
