Posted: 25 Apr 2020 07:15 PM PDT We just bought our first home and are looking for a good security system. I was going to do DIY first and am having the debate of wired or wireless/batteries.. I just bought a Ring doorbell, and the concept of Ring everything with them all integrated and control from one app sounds great. Getting conflicting reviews. If you had to start from scratch, what security system would you recommend? It is a 2500 sq ft home, about half an acre Cape Cod style home. Wondering how many cams typically needed, and if cam system should even be intertwined at all with a security system for doors and such. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
NVR that supports motion detection in ONVIF cameras? NVR software for windows? Posted: 25 Apr 2020 04:52 PM PDT I've tried 3 NVRs:
That don't seem to have consistent compatibility with ONVIF cameras. I've had to settle for a PC running ISPY agent, which is great... except the video quality is poor. I've tried a lot of the VMS software packages, no luck yet. I saw a few posts in here, but they don't quite hit this question. Suggestions? Thanks in Advance. [link] [comments] |

Recs for a security cam that can be viewed/get notifications on the computer & phone? Posted: 25 Apr 2020 05:07 PM PDT I've been searching but I only found one that does this, but no reliable retailer is selling it anymore, just 3rd party sellers, which in my experience are a hassle to deal with sometimes. Thank you so much! [link] [comments] |

Inherited and old system and I want upgrade or change Posted: 25 Apr 2020 08:26 PM PDT When I bought my house, it had a DSC 832 system with window, door, smoke detectors, floor mat sensor and panic buttons tied into the system. Only some of the sensors ever seem to have worked, some of the doors and the floor mat worked, everything else seem to be broken. I never tested the panic buttons... I never activated a monitoring service on the system. I did buy an Envisalink3 from Eyezon to tie into SmartThings and later homeassistant. A few weeks ago the keypad went and died at 3AM and apparently makes an annoying shriek every 10 seconds. That wasn't because someone was trying to break in since the system has never been in an armed state since I've been here. I'm at a crossroads at what to do with what I have. I'm tempted to gut the DSC 832 and try and tie the sensors into a microcontroller and tie directly into HomeAssistant. Or if there is a good open source alarm panel option that will not lock me out of integrating with HomeAssistant I would consider it. The sensors are all hard wired, nothing is wireless. I plan to troubleshoot the failed window and door sensors and see if I can get them going again. I'm not necessarily looking to get a professionally monitored system. I'd just like to utilize the sensors to work with my home automation. Reconnect the panic buttons and do something weird with them.... What would you do if you were me? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Apr 2020 06:21 AM PDT Hey there- I am glad to know a sub exists for basically everything in my life i take interest in, or need help with. Just found this sub after having been researching systems for my apartment. I would need a DIY system because my current landlord won't allow me to have stuff installed- I have been looking into Simplisafe, but I have some reservations with them. First of all I dont think their standalone camera is capable of outdoor functionality, and it also does not offer audio that I know of. I also know they can be disarmed fairly easily (not a huge concern, I just wont put the "Simplisafe" sign outside my house). I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on this system, or could recommend one with audio/outdoor camera capabilites that can be self-installed? I don't know if that is a possibilty or not. I would prefer to not do Ring, or Nest, as I don't particularly trust them nor like the reviews I have seen. Thanks for reading this, have a happy Saturday. [link] [comments] |
Security Camera (Indoor looking outside) Posted: 25 Apr 2020 06:26 AM PDT Hey everyone, I am having an issue with trespassing and vandalism directly in front of my house. I need to get some video for evidence to hopefully get it resolved. Thankfully, I have a ton of windows so I can have a camera inside the house, facing in that direction. Do you have any recommendations? On Amazon, I see the Nest cameras are popular, but are subscription based. I also see a lot of "Yi" (Xiaoyi) cameras but I don't have faith in the company respecting my privacy. Edit: Also, if it's a wifi camera, being 5ghz compatible is a big plus Edit 2: I should also note that I can also install on the exterior if needed. I'm looking at the Logitech Circle 2 right now. Posted: 25 Apr 2020 04:20 AM PDT Hi, I bought this H.VIEW POE camera and I am just wondering if I can use its Ethernet port to connect it to my standard router and then power it via a power adaptor? Reason I ask is because I don't have a POE switch, but I do have both the Ethernet and power cords. [link] [comments] |
What do I need for a single camera? Posted: 25 Apr 2020 03:12 AM PDT I need to install a single camera on our front door. I'm going to go with a NVR because I want to be able to open the camera from my computer, phone, etc. Here's a quick diagram of how I have it in my head at the moment. https://i.imgur.com/Kypznxy.png What I want to know is, do I need a network switch? Or it depends on what type of NVR I get? Also, how do I watch the camera from my phone when I'm not at home using the local network? Edit: Also want to know what kind of camera do I need for an NVR? Most I find are with coaxial cables. Can I connect those to an NVR? [link] [comments] |
