I know, another one. I'll make this short and sweet.

I want to replace my alarm.com wifi garbage cams with PoE cams. I lucked out, and in the attic of my home I have an extra structured wiring LAN cable available, which is hanging in close proximity to an unused standard electrical outlet. This is the perfect situation to add a PoE switch in the attic, that way I can mount the cams and run the cables to the attic switch.

However, I'm not sure what switch to go with. I live in the South, and the heat index can reach upwards of 110 degrees F in the Summer. Is there any switch rated to endure the even-higher temps that would be in the attic?

I'm looking at going with Amcrest cameras. This is outdoor-only, and some sort of intelligent motion detection would be nice. I'd prefer to not have to mess around with Blue Iris and all that, as it seems doing so would use more time than I really have available for this project.

My plan at the moment is to get the switch and only one camera, that way I can mess with them and test some configurations out and get comfortable with everything before I adding the other 4+ cameras that I'd need.

On a related note, are the alarm.com compatible PoE cams any good, or are they also garbage? I'm not sure why none of the local resellers even offer the PoE option. TIA.

    DIY home security camera recommendations?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 07:29 PM PST

My brother, sister and I are seeking to install a low-profile camera in our Mom's hone. We just want to keep an eye on her in her older years. Being completely honest, my computer skills are about average. So basically, we thought of purchasing a low-profile surveillance camera. It would be ideal to have the camera plugged into an outlet. We'd like to just to make sure that she is moving, and we'd like to access that camera footage by smartphone. By the way, there is a very strong Wi-Fi signal within the home. One of my friends suggested buying the RING system. But quite frankly, the RING camera is pretty large and obtrusive. So any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Looking for home security system

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 08:07 PM PST

Looking for a home security system that has multiple cameras that work off motion detection and that send an alert to my mobile if anything is detected. Also lots of stray cats around the area that could set some alarms off. Budget is around $350 and can be self-installed.

My neighbor across the street had her car stolen. I have a few questions and would like a recommendation please.

I want to have a few indoor and outdoor cameras now that her car got stolen.

Are there any options for wireless outdoor cameras that are worth a shit? Is WiFi the only way they can communicate? I have home seer and other zwave devices if that matters.

Could I get a recommendation for wired indoor and outdoor and a wireless outdoor unless it absolutely sucks compared to PoE.

A few years ago there was concerns about cameras being hacked (?). Because they were china made. I don't remember the specifics or if that's even true but if that's an issue I don't mind paying a bit more so that's not a problem.

My budget is maybe 100 to 150 a camera. The best bang for your buck camera for indoor and outdoor would be great. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Edit I'm going to use blue Iris to monitor my cameras. I'm unsure if the software or hardware is responsible for this but I'd like it to record on motion unless that's not reliable then 24 7 is fine

Advice needed for small wifi cameras.

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 10:48 AM PST

Hi, I've been trying to Google this but can't find clear answers. I'm after a small camera that I can place on my desk at home that I can view while at work remotely. I've seen wifi cameras that say you can view via an app but I don't want one that I can just view while I'm connected to WiFi. What is the feature called that you can view the camera while away from home? I've seen the floureon IP camera with pan/tilt etc does the IP mean I can view it remotely away from home? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Outdoor security cam with 24/7 recording?

    Posted: 04 Mar 2020 06:50 AM PST

My parents are looking to replace two of their outdoor Blink xt2 cameras because they sometimes fail to record even when there's lots of motion. I'm wondering what a good hardwired option would be that records non-stop either to an onboard SD card or a DVR through Wi-Fi, that has the ability to view/save clips through a phone app as well.

Edit: The cameras will be setup right outside a 2 story bedroom window, and plugged into an outlet, but there's no hard wired ethernet connection available in the bedroom.
