LPT: If you recently purchased a firearm as a new gun owner, PLEASE PRACTICE RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERSHIP!

As we are all well aware of by now, there is quite a lot of panic buying and stockpiling in preparation for the anticipated long-term effects of COVID-19. In addition to buying things like toilet paper and hand sanitizer, there has been a HUGE increase in firearm sales and new firearm owners.

IF YOU ARE A NEW GUN OWNER, PLEASE SPEND SOME TIME LEARNING AND PRACTICING RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERSHIP. Familiarize yourself with your new firearm's manual of operation; how a firearm operates varies significantly between different types of firearms. Establish a safe method of storage that works for your current situation and living environment; take into consideration not just yourself, but those who may be around or living in your home as well. Understand your local firearm-related laws. Do some basic research on firearm safety.

MY FOUR GOLDEN RULES OF SAFETY:

    1. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded AT ALL TIMES.
    2. Never aim your firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy.
    3. Always keep your finger off the trigger until you are absolutely ready to shoot.
    4. Maintain control of your firearm at all times, either securely stored or on your person (with the necessary licensing)

At the VERY MINIMUM, please heed my four points above. However, I highly recommend new gun owners to delve deeper and to seek education in responsible gun ownership. In light of the recommended social distancing at this time, in-person training/classes might not be an ideal or available option. I've compiled some online resources below that should be helpful for new gun owners to watch/read/view:

NSSF Rules for Safe Firearm Handling: Handguns 101: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvDLU-4InbU

    NSSF Handling Rifles Safely: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mK7uihP5oMY

    NSSF Gun Storage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pj-PTSrXosc

USCCA How To Store & Stage Your Guns For Home Defense - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSIYXWvkAo8

This is just a short list of generic, beginner-friendly videos I threw together. YouTube has a plethora of information readily available to viewers. Irresponsible gun ownership is harmful to the owner, those around the owner, and to the firearm community as a whole. I urge all new gun owners to spend some time researching and learning about gun safety as it pertains to your specific firearm, intended uses, and living environment.

If any new gun owners have any questions, please feel free to DM me and I will try my best to help or point you in the right direction. To all seasoned gun owners, please feel free to comment any helpful resources.

Thoughts on Window Bars and other defensive measures

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 10:54 AM PDT

So I live in a downtown adjacent area, lived here for 4 years but it seems in the last year there have been increasing incidents of theft, robbery, burglary, vandalism, etc.

I was about to start upgrading from Nest cameras to high end PoE cameras and adding some additional cameras. However given recent events I'm wondering if maybe that money would be better spent on fortifying windows and doors for stronger barriers VS Improving cameras. (Not looking to comment or discuss politics, economy, medical, etc.) Also was planning on adding more motion lights when running Ethernet for cameras.

Currently, have Alarm with monitoring, multiple big Dogs, home defense weapons, concrete block wall around backyard with chained and pad locked solid gates.

So if you could choose right now between better cameras or barring windows/doors what would you do?

Also open to other ideas beyond just these two options.

Looking for the communities input on a good entry camera system.

I work rotating shifts about 5 minutes from home, and around 3am I got a call from my wife telling me that someone had rang our doorbell twice and then pounded on the door. We have two young children and even though we have a large German Shepherd and she was armed she was scared shitless. I immediately left work to come check it out and I can see that whoever was here walked through my grass to my side yard gate and back. We have cameras mounted that came with the house, but I know nothing about them other than that they're hooked up to a Swann DVR 4 Net Plus unit that is currently inoperable. We had talked about getting a newer system but just hadn't done it yet. Well now that things have escalated I am set on getting a new setup, or potentially working with what we have if it's worth it, but this world is entirely foreign to me so I am unsure of where to start. I was about to impulse buy a Ring Pro and a couple of their cameras, but I really want something that I can record locally and view on a monitor in the house as well as be alerted to my phone when there is activity detected. Is there anything like this that I can purchase for around or under 500 bucks? Something I can add more cameras to later on? I'd like to eventually have 5-6 but 4 would be plenty to start with.

Thank you to anyone with the patience to deal with my ignorance and help me out.
