Home security: Dedicated camera for reading license plates

Home security: Dedicated camera for reading license plates

Dedicated camera for reading license plates

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 02:23 PM PST

We've been having problems around our neighborhood -- People have been coming in at 3am, maybe 4 people in a car, walking around trying to open car doors, or stealing anything that may be easy to grab.

I am in the process of installing cameras around my home, but would also like to have something to capture license plates at night. Cars don't go more than 20 mph on the street, if it's thieves they're probably going even slower.

Our property goes all the way to the sidewalk -- so I'm wondering if I can hide a camera in a fake rock or in the bushes. Would prefer to keep this camera hidden... any thoughts / advice would be great.

I'd prefer to use a cheaper camera that's placed closer to the road than a super high end LPR, that itself could get stolen...

Looking for Advice - ADT not working

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 06:16 AM PST

I was recommended this sub after posting on JustNoSO about an incident I had last night. After separating from my soon to be ex husband I invested in an ADT security system. He's diagnosed bipolar, very angry, and frankly scares me.

It worked well during the 30 day cancel window but has worked like crap since then. Namely, one of the cameras won't record when triggered, the other only sometimes. Neither of them text me when triggered as they were set up to. I've had multiple service calls. First it was determined that my internet wasn't strong enough (never mentioned at signing or setup). I switched providers at my own extra expense (which I really can't afford since my husband left). Same problem. Spent over an hour with them on the phone Friday to be told I need to buy a wifi extender. Which I was looking into when the following happened:

Last night I head my dog barking in the yard. I go to bring her in and notice the gate is open. I have a big dog, so I invested in a 6 foot privacy fence several years ago. It has a huge, sturdy gate. It wouldn't just swing open. It also has a very clearly posted "no trespassing" and "dog on premises" signs.

Check camera one, which covers the entire length of my house and cuts just short of the gate, about 60 ft. Sure enough an hour earlier someone had walked down the entire length, spent a few minutes off camera, and left. Check the back camera, which faces the gate and would have recorded everything they did.

    Nothing.

I have no idea why this person was on my property, no idea why they left my gate open, nothing. It didn't look like my ex.

So 1, does anyone have recommendations for additional security? I've added a padlock to the gate and the area is actually very well lit.

And 2, has anyone had any experience with getting out of an ADT contact? I called them immediately after and they were suitably concerned and are sending an agent out this morning but I can't say I trust their products at all. I don't feel I should be obligated to pay to end the contract if their product hasn't worked. Does anyone have experience with this? Any alternative services they use?

    Thanks.

Home security on a budget- no monthly professional monitoring but looking for push notifications

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 11:53 AM PST

I am looking to get a security system for a new house I'm buying but don't want to break the bank. I see a ton of big names (simpli safe, cove etc) are having holiday sales so I am as well pull trigger on that now.

I do not want to do the monthly professional monitoring but DO want something where I can monitor via my phone like viewing cameras from there or if an alarm is triggered it sends me a notification.

Any recommendations from this group? Looking to stay around the ~250 range for the whole Shebang

Also welcome to non big names so long as they have self monitoring and notifications on phone!

Help me choose a camera system

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 07:18 AM PST

I recently moved into a new house. At my old place I had some basic swann security cameras that were mediocre at best. I know very little about the cameras especially their night vision capabilities. I am good with computer but I don't know which route will be best within my budget.

I am expecting to spend about $800. I would also like to use poe for about 7 cameras total. Other than that I don't know what the best options are. Should I build my own system or stick with a packaged system like lorex.

    Wanted: farm surveillance system rec

    Posted: 20 Dec 2020 04:48 PM PST

Farm theft has increased exponentially in my area. We are looking for solutions to protect our farm equipment. We have 40 employees that work from our farm that come and go from 5am to 7pm mon-sun. The sheds are located 800m (approx 2400feet) down a driveway. There is a cement gateway at the road with a gate but we cannot shut the gate as trucks need to enter the property and there isnt space on the road easement for them to stop while the gate opens. The front of the property is bushland. We have 2 stableblocks with a feedshed and tackrooms that need security, a truckyard, a storage shed and mechanics shed which are joined and very large and a large shed for storing machinery. All buildings are separated (except storage and mechanic shed).

The driveway goes into the truckyard (lockable gate for after hours) but also continues around it, past the house to the stables and machinery shed. There is a second entrance to the truckyard on the stables side which has no gate. In the truckyard is a diesel tank. Halfway down the drive, we have a woodchips pile and a loader which has been broken into before. There is no electricity down the driveway and the distance from the house's router is too far for wifi unless we set up an extender on the shed roof.

Can anyone suggest a system or products that would work for us? Any tips or things to remember? We are based in Australia.

Im thinking a motion sensed numberplate camera at the gate (though weve had "visitors" with stolen numberplates before so thats not helpful really) but without electricity or wifi, I dont know how this would work. We need to be able to see faces and vehicle details, ideally we'd like something to connect to a phone app so we can instantly see if we need to send the dog out and everything needs night vision. Does solar work ok these days? How big a SD cards would we need?

I have absolutely no idea where to start. Please help
