Which security camera systems offer instant alerts and fast app-video loading performance?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 11:35 AM PST

Looking for a camera solution that will notify me instantly with minimal lag from when I press the notification on the home screen of my phone to where I'm able to 2-way talk with someone. I have a Ring, Arlo and YI cameras and they are all too slow with the notifications or app-loading performance.

I'd prefer something with local storage, either a microSD or a NVR. Budget is $500-$1000 and I need at least 4 cameras and enough local storage to keep a weeks worth of footage.

Need help with securing an apartment door

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 11:38 PM PST

Hi everyone. There's been 2 burglaries in couple of days in our apartment complex, so i'm looking for advice on how to make the door harder to break into as well as alarm system that will notify me whenever someone might try to do so or succeeds. It's just one door entrance to the apartment that looks sturdy enough but the lock itself as i'm told is easily picked. So i'm looking for advice on locks and locking mechanisms as well as alarm. Open to any suggestions. Thank you

Suggestions for securing a metal outward swinging terrace door?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 05:57 PM PST

Currently in a rental so I"m leaning towards a solution that doesn't involve drilling into the metal. I really wanted to install a nightlock door barricade but don't know how secure the screws would be in the metal.

Anybody have any other options? something from a manufacturer or DIY

Looking for a wireless security system with verbal alerts.

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 09:12 PM PST

Pretty much title. Don't have a security system at home and after a string of break-ins in the neighborhood I want to install one. Mainly looking for a wireless system with door/motion sensors that I can self monitor. One big sticking point is it must have verbal alerts like saying "Front Door", "Zone 1", or something similar. I already have a PoE camera setup, so that's not a concern. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Smart locks that talk to a Surety System and give notifications that the the door is unlocked?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 08:35 PM PST

    Hey All,
I seem to randomly forget locking the door when I enter my house, and occasional when I leave it. We have a Surety system set up at our place and I wanted to know if there were any smart locks out there that just notify if the door has been left unlocked. We live in an older house and the deadbolt that's currently installed doesn't always line up with the the door jam when the door is closed, so I don't really want to have an automatic lock trying to lock while the door is not in the correct position.
Also would really love it if the door lock didn't look like a smart lock from the outside so as not to draw attention.
    Any ideas?

Any camera recommendations that give access to MAC address before connection?

I live in an apartment and the ISP is through them called boingo. Can't connect cameras I recently purchased on them without adding MAC address first.

ADT Command in my new home. What can I do? (Photo)

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 02:14 PM PST

The previous owner of my home had what seems like a brand new ADT system with the touchscreen command module (picture). Every time I open a widow or a door, the unit beeps and it's gotten very obnoxious. We do not know the code the previous owner used. My question is- can anything be done to salvage the functions of the system? Is there a way to get a new center module that will connect to the sensors so I can use it locally or with a provider of my choosing? What are my options.

    Shared Apartment Security

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 12:02 PM PST

Good day to you all, I'm a little bit in a pickle here.

I just got confirmation that my application for a shared apartment has been approved. The apartment is a 4 bedroom layout with 6 maximum occupants, of which I will have a private room with a lock on my door. I won't really know my roommates until I move in, and I'm a little worried about my possessions. I'll hop on the renter's insurance, but I'd also like to have some extra security.

I've got a number of electronics such as professional gaming PC, 4k monitor, and some flight sim equipment that's relatively expensive. Being active duty, there's often times I stand duty overnight and will be away for a couple weeks at a time.

I'm looking for an inexpensive setup, possibly a camera system that's a little bit discreet. Not "super spycam", but not a camera that's out in the open either, preferably with motion detection. I'd prefer to have it just store the data locally onto an SD card and writes over old files, because the apartment I'm pretty sure will not have wired internet. I've got a Synology media server right now that I use for movies, but I guess I could go down that route if needed.

I've thought about even just using my old Mobius Dashcam camera, which has both of those features of Motion Activated and rewriting when the SD card gets full, but I'd be more worried about that thing overheating (it'd have to stay plugged into AC power) and I don't know if I trust it as much as some newer stuff that may be out there and fits the role better.

Obviously, being a leased room, hardware modifications to the room aren't permitted, so anything with screws or nails to be fastened to the wall wouldn't be viable.

    Tl;dr,

Looking for a camera with: Motion Activated, preferred Local Storage (SD Card), AC Powered (not battery operated), discreet but not "spycam", and a max $150 budget.

    Any help guys?

Recommendations for a system that sends phone alerts

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 11:28 AM PST

I have a small apartment that I want to purchase a security system for, but I don't want one that requires a monthly surveillance fee—I just want a simple "if sensor is tripped, activate camera and send notification / live feed to phone."

My landlord occasionally needs to enter the apartment for maintenance and I don't want a surveillance company calling the cops every time he enters... but at the same time, I'd like to know when he's there and what he's doing—or if someone other than him enters so I can call the cops myself.

    Any suggestions?
