    Hikvision turret question.

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 02:17 PM PST

So I was out and about and noticed a hikvision camera at a business that was low to the ground and the QR code on the camera just visible to anyone. I thought to myself "no way anyone can be that stupid, right?"

Opened the hikvision connect app, selected visitor, scanned, boom showed up.

How is this a thing? I feel like I should mention it to the owners.

Promptly deleted it from the app after I realized it worked.

Didn't have to enter any info at all. Scan and done. Makes me worried about mine at home.

Looking for some in/outdoor security cameras and dvr

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 01:03 PM PST

My family owns some land we use for hunting, it's in a wooded area with minimal concern. However, we had someone break in and steal find some things back in 2003 or something and ever since we have been paranoid lol.

At any rate, we don't need some high tech stuff but some gear I'm looking for is a dvr/nvr system that I can connect to remotely, preferably with my phone but by pc is fine. We have a jetpack that is connected to Verizon data network and it has 24gbs a month. Id prefer to only utilize data when I check the streaming. I usually utilize ip cameras at my home and such but they destroy data.

Sorry if I'm not being articulate. I just want some cameras that can see our grounds and inside the cabin and I can connect to it remotely without destroying data :) Any suggestions are appreciated!

Options for working with an existing security system

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 07:45 AM PST

I recently purchased a new house that came with a part of a security system. There are contacts on some of the doors and windows, a motion detector, and pre-wiring outside for cameras. There are a couple of panels (DSC I think) that seem pretty low-tech and difficult to use.

We would like to upgrade to at least (1) having outdoor cameras; (2) having a more useful panel; and (3) ideally having the ability to control/monitor on our phones. I'm also interested in the idea of monitoring because we get about $20/month in insurance discounts.

I've seen a lot of conflicting information on the best options in my case. (For example, some sites say just use the WiFi systems, but are we then losing the advantage of the prewiring?) Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
