Looking for a wireless outdoor camera to capture license plates

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 06:02 PM PST

Hey all, I have a fairly long driveway, about 300'. I am looking for a wireless camera that I can position about 1/3rd of the way down the driveway (from the road) facing the house. This would allow me to catch rear plates as they enter the property before the camera is visible. My state doesn't require front plates so I feel like this set up would be more fool proof than hoping to catch a rear plate on the way out.

The wifi/wireless range is the biggest issue for me. I can position the camera within a couple feet of the driveway and easily conceal it so it range is a far second as long as the plate is clear.

Car speeds through my subdivision and immediately speeds back out every night at exactly 1:05am for last ~6 weeks

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 11:20 PM PST

Hoping this is an appropriate place to post this but please lmk if not!

I live in the burbs. Very safe area in general and in a subdivision with plenty of great neighbors.

About six weeks ago, I heard a car speed through my neighborhood with audio coming from it that was SO loud. I say "audio" and not music because it was spoken word, whatever the hell it was. I'm talking like...so loud as if they wanted people to hear it. So that's first major flag, but the weirdest part was that they pulled into my neighbor's driveway and sat there for maybe 30 seconds or a little less. Lights on and everything (honestly might have even been brights, they seemed bright white). And then they reversed and sped back out the way they came. When they reversed, it was LOUD. Not just that weird audio, but it's like you could clearly hear that they changed gears. It was loud and abrupt. Bizarre, right? But I've seen a lot of weird stuff, so just noted it and shrugged it off.

Next night, what do you know? Same exact thing happens. Except I think I remember them being in the driveway for a shorter time before throwing in reverse and leaving. All other details constant. Same weird audio, everything. I didn't shrug it off like last time, but I also didn't share with anyone because I wanted to be sure there was something non-coincidental.

Night 3, same exact thing happens. And now I realize that it's around the exact time each time so far (between 1am and 1:05am).

So, next day, I called my neighbor (known my whole life, my best friend's parents) and told her all of this. She was definitely alarmed and said they'd keep an eye out if one of them happened to be up that late and I let her know I'm usually up so I'll also keep an eye out.

Then, nothing. For probably at least a week.

I remember honestly thinking okay, must have just been a random weird thing. No explanation but no longer an issue, alright, cool.

Then, it starts happening again. This time, though, they do NOT pull into my neighbor's driveway. They go to the top of my neighborhood and then come back down. Speeding. Same loud audio. And same exact timeframe.

At that point, I really thought to myself that it must be some other neighbor who lives at the top of the neighborhood (I don't know those neighbors well at all) and maybe a younger person who works a night shift somewhere nearby (restaurant, etc.). That would explain the same exact time part, right? But... they always leave immediately. So, doesn't seem like they live here. I also definitely would have noticed this if it had previously been occurring.

The whole ordeal entry to exit is less than a minute. And the audio is always the same. I can't make out what is being said but, again, it's definitely spoken.

It's now been happening almost every night for about a month. I tuned it out because I just generally doubt myself and talk myself out of things. Like there had to be an explanation. And also, surely another neighbor would have also noticed and called the cops by now if they also assessed it was inappropriate (I know, spiral of silence).

It just happened again. And I had my bedroom lights on this time (90% of the time I don't) but sort of hid behind a plant I have so I wasn't visible (I don't think I was, at least). I heard the entry but by the time I looked out I missed it, but I knew I'd catch the exit in less than a minute. Sure enough. My mind definitely could be playing tricks but it did seem like the car slowed down a bit in front of my house...

I'm creeped out more than I have been with this, and I'm definitely calling the cops in the morning.

What the hell is going on here? Can anyone think of an explanation?

    Remote Barns Surveillance

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 06:51 PM PST

My cousin runs a farming operation in Canada, and has recently been experiencing theft from barns. Theft is a concern, but also safety as the thieves can leave things in a state where the whole operation could go up in flames. As the family tech guy, he reached out to me for help but this really isn't my area of expertise. I'm hoping you can help out.

    Requirements:

    • 20ish barns located across several farms acquired over the years
    • Power is available in each barn
    • Internet can be made available via nearby neighbouring houses and long-range antennas. Note that these would all be on separate networks
    • Cellular isn't particularly feasible due to cost in Canada
    • Would like to be notified of motion at unexpected times (eg at night), and respond in real-time (eg call the police)
    • System would be active during two summer months of the year, otherwise likely inactive
    • Equipment would need to be able to survive Canadian winter

I've searched the sub and found other discussions, but most solutions assume all cameras on the same network for an NVR. The best fit I'm seeing so far looks like Reolink, but that's just based on some heavy googling and frankly I don't trust my knowledge here.

    Any suggestions?

    Security Camera No WiFi/Power Available

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 07:59 AM PST

I'm looking to put up a security camera (or multiple) on my property with no WiFi or power currently available. I was hoping to find camera with local storage that could be offloaded with having to physically take the sd card out. I've checked out cellular camera but don't want to pay the monthly cellular subscription.

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

'Seeing that... made me cry': Ring CEO on security lapses

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 11:12 AM PST

Does anyone know why security cameras record hundreds of small files rather than 1 big file? Need to pull a days worth of video but instead of one 8 hour long video it recording 812 small files instead. Also look at how file 1 and 2 overlap. Is there a reason for this?

    FTP and Video Recording Upload

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 05:16 AM PST

    Hi Everyone,

Thinking of buying a camera with an sd card and have my computer at as a FTP server. My question is will my recordings be uploaded to my server (or available for viewing) through the mobile app, if I turn my pc off for a bit and then turn it on later?

For example, if I'm recording from 8am - 11 am, and my pc is on from 8-10 and off from 10-11, when I turn my pc back on at 11, will the recording from 10-11 be uploaded to my server or only be available on sd card?

If not, would I have to climb a ladder and pull out the sd card to view the video footage from 10-11? Or does the sd card footage get uploaded or assessable for viewing via the network / app.

The system I'm thinking of going with is reolink of that makes a difference

What are justifiable reasons for shooting someone?

    Posted: 12 Nov 2020 08:31 AM PST

i live in New York. my brother, his wife and 3 kids used to live upstairs with us until he had a fight with my brother downstairs. my father who owns the house got a restraining order on the brother upstairs and told him to move out of the house with his 3 kids and wife. ever since, he's been threatening us. he has an AK-47 that he previously threatened to use on me. he comes here to get mail and bangs and kicks on the front door swearing and intimidating me whenever he shows up. i recently purchased a pistol and wanted to know if him threatening me and my family, pounding on the door and cussing is a justifiable reason to shoot him and deter him from coming back to the house.

Question about Dahua NVR Camera Kits

    Posted: 11 Nov 2020 11:54 PM PST

I'm helping my father-in-law with installing home security cameras, so preferably a "low" maintenance setup for him. I work with enterprise routers and cloud tech in general, but have not touched home security.

Doing my homework it seems Dahua is a respected brand, but I can't discern a full part list for a basic IP cam setup.

I did come across this kit:

    https://defendityourself.com/collections/ip-camera-nvr-kits/products/dahua-2-4k-dome-4-4-mp-eyeball-ip-security-cameras-with-8-channel-4k-nvr-kit-w-3tb-hdd-n488d63

Are these a decent value? We're securing a one story home that has motion lights in the front, but dark in the back. He doesn't have a machine to dedicate to this, so I'm assuming this kit includes routing/storage/PoE all-in-one and we just run cable to it then configure?

The goal is to be able to monitor from internal or remotely on a mobile phone, alerts for motion detection, etc. I assume these are all standard features nowadays but I could be wrong.

    Appreciate any advice.
