    Obsessively checking the door locks?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 10:52 PM PST

Does anyone else check and re-check the locks on their doors? Not sure if I belong in a neurosis subreddit or something, but ever since we got our house, I've been checking and rechecking the locks at night before bed. It's gotten worse this year (2020). Like, even when I'm standing there looking at the door, I /really/ have to make sure it's locked. Anyone else do anything similar?

Please help me understand the DIY home security landscape

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 06:43 AM PST

    Hey team,

To give you some context, I work in technology and have set up my own ZWave network at home with various branded smart devices on Samsung Smartthings. I've tried and failed to make disparate ZWave sensors to properly work together as a "security system" because Smartthings has its limitations and the workarounds were not inspiring confidence in a system that would have to be patched together with so many points of failure. I never adopted expensive home monitoring solutions like ADP so I thought I would give Ring a try. I've heavily invested in Ring products (with 10 interior stick up cams, a doorbell, a garage floodlight cam, and 2 spotlights) for video, as well as their alarm system with various contact and motion sensors throughout the home. I don't mind their monitoring fee of $10 either, but I hate the user interface, the fact that I can only see live feeds through their crappy app, and the lack of straightforward integration between my home automation system, all of my Google smart devices (pucks, speakers, thermostat and home hub), and the way that recordings function and are stored in the cloud.

From a physical home security perspective, I invested in Schlage Primus deadbolts and StrikeMaster 2 Pro doorjambs, sliding doors are reinforced, and we're a 2A heavy home, nothing beats that right? I also hardwired my home with CAT6a because who doesn't need 20Gbps ethernet at home?! I don't shy away from doing all the work myself, electrical and otherwise, and have a decent understanding of electrical engineering, software engineering, and technology in general.

My fiancé and I are moving to a new home and I thought this would be the perfect time to leave all of this behind and start fresh. I thought I would look into Nest products since we enjoy Google products, but I found their home security products to be lacking in both depth and breadth just like Amazon Ring's. The characteristics of my old ecosystem that I don't see changing are the Google smart devices, and the physical home security reinforcements. The new ecosystem will be built around that but it needs to consider the harmony between:

    • Home automation (haven't done enough research yet into latest trends in 2020, but we're sticking with ZWave as a platform, and most likely moving away from Smartthings)
    • Home monitoring (I am now considering hardwired camera solutions for the outdoors, think BNC-connected cameras and a DVR, but would like suggestions on this as I have no experience with them or if there are other solutions that could be described as a "black box" in the sense that they are self-reliant for video monitoring and storage, but extend an API out that could be tapped into by a home automation system that brings everything together)
    • Home alarm (I'm considering going to a heavy-duty alarm system like a Honeywell wired panel that again could be controlled via a programmatic interface by a home automation solution). I feel like these systems have been around for a long time and have the reputation of resilience that I'm looking for. I also need advice in this realm as I've never worked with any before

Other things to consider, internet security is something that I specialize in so that isn't a penetration vector I'm overlooking. Ideally, the ecosystem is designed in such a way that if one of the facets above fails, it doesn't bring the whole system down - at least the camera system and the alarm system should be self-reliant.

I apologize for the long-winded description of what I'm trying to achieve - I don't know how to describe my goals more succinctly given the amount of things there are to consider and my lack of depth in the subject, so I figured most of you may have a lot more knowledge about these topics than I do, and I would love to learn from your experience.

    Thank you very much!

TL;DR: My home is a very heterogeneous ecosystem where my home automation, home security, and AI home capabilities don't play well with each other. I'm looking to create a professional, self-reliant ecosystem that considers the aforementioned home defense and automation facets and would love your insight into what has worked for you.

Security System for a single lady, SimpliSafe, Ring, help??????

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 08:14 AM PST

    Hello Everyone,

I know I should read the thousands of posts but help. I already cancelled my installation with Vivint and DT, as I read lots of bad about them and the costs.

What would you recommend for a single lady that I can either install myself, I definitely need an outdoor camera with motion for my backyard as that is where my bedroom is. Not lots of outlets so something that does not need hardwired would be best. It is so overwhelming with everything. SimpliSafe or Ring? But than I look at what you get you add to it, its the price of 3K vivint, maybe I should just pay them?? I didn't want to pay 5 years for it, please help

I'd like some alternatives to the Lorex 4kmpx1616 camera system

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 08:27 AM PST

    https://www.lorextechnology.com/hd-dvr-security-system/4k-8mp-hd-camera-home-security-system/4KMPX1616-2-1-p
    It's major features are

    bnc wired

    4k and night vision

    video and audio recording

    local storage

    16 4kcameras

Does anyone have anything comparable since they are out of stock for their Black Friday sale? It's normally 1250 and would be 937 if they had it in stock to apply the Black Friday savings.

    Old Xfinity Security System

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 02:42 AM PST

I have a couple door sensors, motion sensor, and security keypad still setup in my house after I cancelled my Xfinity home security plan months ago. I didn't have to return them or anything but Is it possible to somehow still use those sensors without having to activate a subscription again through Xfinity?
