Home security: Electronic lock security thoughts

    Electronic lock security thoughts

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 03:45 PM PST

Just bought a house- first time buyer- and I want to change the locks immediately. Instead of just getting new keys/tumbler or whatever, we want to change the whole thing out for an electronic keypad lock as we have one in the house we're currently in and quite like the convenience.

But I'd love to get some of your thoughts/info cos I'm having a hard time getting relevant reviews.

How safe are they really?- how easy is it to hack or otherwise open them (I don't want a smart lock just an electronic keypad and ideally with a key lock too). I can't find any videos or reviews that rate electronic locks in terms of security. Probably because nobody wants to be liable for any bad recommendations.

    Thoughts on buttons vs touchpad?

Any to avoid or that you would rate well? In Canada so need one that is good in the cold (which a lot are not)

Any rechargeable WiFi cameras with 2 way talk that can save footage to a Windows 10 PC automatically?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:33 AM PST

I might be asking too much, but I've seen a lot of cameras that are rechargeable, work over WiFi, have an SD card or USB port for storage, and that have a mobile app for 2 way talk and alerts, but ideally I'd like to be able to record footage on a Windows 10 PC in the house.

I don't want a cloud storage solution or subscription.

I've seen the Eufy and Arlo systems which have their own storage hubs, but I'd rather use my own file server if possible.

I'm in the UK and my budget is up to £150 if such a thing exists. Might be able to stretch to more if it's a good solution.

Someone keeps dumping garbage at one of the apartments my family owns so we are looking into getting security cameras.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 04:29 PM PST

None of us live at the apartment and there isn't an office at the apartments or something like that. What would be the best way to set up security cameras that can record the place that saves storage? I want to catch this guy, they dump stuff in the parking lot like mattresses and old furniture that doesn't fit in a trash can. I know most of the security cameras require wi-fi but since none of us live there we don't have that option.

Question regarding replacement of home security camera system, but not cameras themselves.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 11:21 AM PST

    Hello,

Short summary: I am asking you if my security cameras will work using a different brand's system, and if you have any home security camera system recommendations based on my info below. Thanks.

I currently have an Annke home security camera system. For your reference, the system itself says Model: DN81R; Amazon says the model number is AU-DW81KD1-V3-58BH-P#USVC. I only record to a hard drive.

As of now, the system itself has stopped recognizing hard drives, therefore I can no longer record the camera inputs. The cameras are still working.

I have had no luck with Annke customer support on resolving the issue, so I would like to get a new system.

My first question is based on the info I have provided, am I able to get a new recording system that is compatible with my current cameras, or will I have to stick with Annke? I do not have any hardware experience, and 15 minutes of googling was not able to solve this for me.

My second question is do you have any recommendations on home security camera system brands? While I would like to stick with hard drive recording as I'm not really interested in cloud recording or live remote viewing, I am open to switching if the cloud options are significantly superior.

    Thanks for your time.

    Setup for a new home

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 07:48 PM PST

Hi home security experts, I've been browsing for the best setup for a house I'm buying and struggling to navigate all the options.

The new house has a gate at the front, which already has an electric strike. This gate has the doorbell on it. Once you get through the gate, you're at the front door of the house. The front door doesn't have an electric strike.

What I'm hoping for, for the entry way:

    • a camera on the gate (smart doorbell) to see anyone who walks up
    • a doorbell that pings our phones on press, and shows the video from the camera
    • the ability to unlock the gate OR the gate+door (ie. for package deliveries vs visitors)
    • a keypad which can have codes to open gate or gate+door

For the rest of the house, I'd also like to fit an alarm system. Ideally something that integrates with all of the above. All of this will be wired, and it'll be in wifi range if necessary.

I'm pretty handy with electronics so can wire it all up, and I'm a software engineer so not scared of tying it all together with homeassistant. My previous homeassistant projects have been unpopular with the wife for being "somewhat unreliable", so something standalone is probably better. Happy to pay the right price to get something that works.

I've looked at the abode security system and the EZVIZ DB1, but not sure how to solve the unlocking thing above. Could do a custom build but don't know where to start looking for components. All help greatly appreciated!

looking for: smart doorbell without subscription

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 02:48 AM PST

hello all, I am looking into buying a smart doorbell, these are my requirements:

I prefer it to be wired so it still works with my current chime

Network connection has to be wireless

needs to have a motion sensor, I don't expect a lot of people at my front door as we live in a quiet street in the suburbs

I already ruled out the google and amazon doorbells as they require subscriptions, which I'm allergic too

saving footage in the cloud or on a SD card is fine

I assumed Remobell S would be the perfect fit for me, but apparently it doesn't work very well if you're not located in North America (we live in Belgium)

any help would be greatly appreciated

    New home with wired system

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 10:34 AM PST

Just bought a new home with a DSC wired system. Not crazy about having any of these security companies coming in to takeover so far many have had awful service without even getting started! Was planning on going simplisafe as I could have more control over everything and no contracts.

If I have wired smoke/co2 detectors that I want to keep what are my options with having simplisafe? Anyway to tie those into a separate monitoring system?

    Vista 20p question

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 08:59 AM PST

    Hi All,

I've successfully upgraded my Vista 20se to a Vista 20p. Zones 2-7 are working great but zone 1 (2 wire smoke detectors) I'm not having much success. On my previous SE panel I had a System Sensor RR2 Relay Module https://www.systemsensor.com/en-us/Documents/RR2_Manual_I56-1683.pdf hooked up so that when one smoke alarm went off, they all went off. I rewired this identically but I can only get them to work individually. When I turn on the relay module, the alarms just go off non-stop. The reason the relay module is used is because all the smokes are not wired together, but in 2 different groups, and then they are connected at the relay module with an EOL resistor.

In the RR2 Relay Module manual, it mentions " If the fire alarm output signal is coded, set the switch on the RR2 to "OFF". If the fire alarm output signal is continuous, set the switch to "ON". "

My question is, what coding is this? I feel like I went through each * in programming and have no idea which one this is. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and I can provide more information if needed!

Limited budget, no WiFi camera solution

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 09:51 AM PST

I've only got a few hundred dollars and will have no access to WiFi. Does anyone have any recommendations for a camera set up? It will be located at a building that has power, but no internet access. I can run wires to the camera for data transmitting. I'm totally cool with having to go to the site to review the footage, or even having to pull the HDD when I need to review it. My online searches have gotten me nowhere and every set up I have found seems to require WiFi for data transmitting, which seems a bit unreal, since you're wireless network can be easily infiltrated. Any recommendations are welcome. Thank you all.

    Smart locks on new house

    Posted: 02 Nov 2020 07:50 AM PST

    Hello,

Moving into a new house here in the next few months and I want to look at switching all the deadbolts and locks out for smart/keypadded locks.

I will have 3 doors open to the outside, main front, garage access, and rear garage access.

    My main criteria are:

    • low cost
    • no subscription
    • can be locked/unlocked by phone app

The eufy front door lock is the front runner right now. Are there any other brands I should consider for a similar price?
