    Entering Car without Authorization /premission

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 08:01 AM PDT

Long story short, I am involved in a court case with a family member. This family member has some undiagnosed psychological issues in which they refuse to get help for. I have cut them off from my life in November 2019. Just yesterday I witnessed them opening my car with a spare key and leaving some belongings of mine in the front seat in an old garbage bag, setting off the car alarm, and then driving off. I saw them in the drivers seat, and I know it is their car. This happened in front of my house.

I called 911 and filed a police report. I am going to pursue a restraining order.

The reason the person has a spare key, is because I had bought the car off of them 10+ years ago. I have been the sole owner for that entire time, the title has been in my name. I did not know they kept a spare key.

I live in NY and I was wondering if my case will at all hold up in court, as this person is unhinged and I feel unsafe. They know where I live, and could have easily dropped these items of non importance on my porch or in front of my house somewhere, but they decided to go into my car.

They did not take anything out of the car, just entered it and set the alarm off.

    Recommendations for security systems

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 12:33 PM PDT

Hi guys, recently purchased a home and would really appreciate any recommendations on home security systems. My main goal is to have a live feed of the surrounding areas of the house (front and back yard mainly). One of those ones that are motion activated and notify you on your phone would be ideal. I'm not on board with Ring since I've heard of people easily gaining access to your feed (idk if this is true but its already ruined the whole idea for me). I really don't know much about any of the systems out there but need to get one soon! Thanks in advance!

    MAC Address Sniffer

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 02:07 PM PDT

Over the past few months, I've seen several posts on our local Nextdoor that include fairly impressive quality video of car prowlers, thieves, etc. However, given the current trends towards mask wearing at the moment, the people in the videos are rarely easily identifiable. Plus, the police just don't seem very interested in property crime where I live. That said, often people find their bikes in homeless camps, Craigslist, Offerup, etc. Which made me wonder...

Does anyone know of - or use personally - a MAC address sniffer for home use similar to those used in a retail setting such as Target? I know that iPhones at least have become slightly more sophisticated with randomizing MAC addresses to improve privacy, but I also believe there are ways around this in terms of familiar/known networks. It seems like being able to add a solid piece of data to a video person would be ideal in identifying people.

Any thoughts, ideas or products that are out there? I've not had much luck in my searches though for some reference about what I'm talking about, there is this link: https://courses.csail.mit.edu/6.857/2016/files/34.pdf

[Vivint Doorbell] What happens if I don't sign up for service

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 09:41 AM PDT

The house I'm buying has Vivint installed. I'm not interested in fees and weird contracts. . so I won't sign up

So the doorbell is only sold with a contract. What happens when I don't sign up for the plan? Does it do anything?

Compatibility issues between Lorex system and TV

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 11:25 AM PDT

So I recently ordered and had a 4K hardwire Lorex system installed on my house. Problem is, when I connect the dvr to my tv monitor, nothing shows on the screen no matter how many times I disconnect and reconnect and turn off and turn on and switch hdmi ports and etc etc. I called their customer support and was told it was most likely because my tv didnt support 4K, which seems odd because their website says you should be able to view the cameras without a 4K tv/monitor. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if so how did they get around it without having to purchase a 4K tv.

If you did purchase a 4K tv/monitor, what do you recommend? I'm not looking for anything larger that 30-40", and that's pushing it with the space I have. Thank you all for reading!

Need help protecting my front yard

    Posted: 20 Oct 2020 11:06 AM PDT

Good evening good people of reddit,

I have small, walled front yard and today when I went to work, I noticed that that the umbrella I left outside for 1 night was gone. Moments later, I noticed my plastic orange bowl that I used for small projects, was also gone and I came to find it down the street. My girlfriend was home all day and when I arrived I noticed that someone stole two medium sized potted plants, presumably at the same time the umbrella and the bowl was stolen. All of this took place sometime between 10am and 13pm. For context, I believe the pots were taken inside the plastic bowl, as when I found it, it had dirt in it. Furthermore, next to the plastic bowl, there was a weird sort of cover or blanket and a broken, rusted up key that looked similar to my house key.

It's a very strange burglary and I'm looking into protect my front yard, which is the only access to the house. I cannot get a dog, nor do I have the time to train it. Me and my family came to the conclusion that I need a small camera, with which I can stream the front yard to my computer, cellphone, etc... and maybe even record it. So, need your help in this sense friends. Any cameras, spy cams, CCTV system that I can get that is affordable? I'm an university student with a small budget.
