    Overpenetration in Home Defence

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 10:38 PM PDT

Context: Come from a country where we have very very little land area available so 99% of our residential buildings are 20+ stories high and made of reinforced concrete (even most of the inner walls) because the whole structure is just poured layer by layer. We quite literally have no wood around so concrete was the only way to go (bricks/CMU were only used in historical structures because they were too weak for this purpose)

When I was in the army, we used 556 and it definitely was not powerful enough to penetrate walls in built up areas that we trained in. We occasionally used up excess 762 in our GPMG by blasting away at some of the older walls and it had trouble going through as well. Being ignorant, I just assumed the americans must be using some insanely hot 556 loads for home defence because of so much talk about overpenetration and accidentally shooting their neighbours dog from shooting inside houses.

Turns out american walls are made of 2x4, insulation and drywall (or brick or CMU) and they do not actually have 556s that could shoot through 20cm/6inch poured concrete walls. NGL kinda disappointed you guys don't have such a thing, was hoping to find some insane advances in weapons tech after coming over here.

Pre-amble aside, how do you guys reconcile using rifles for home defence if the fear of overpenetrating is a thing? How do you know your family members won't accidentally get hit?

ps: I've never had to defend myself with a firearm before and we don't train with civilians around so I'm completely unfamiliar in this regard

I have a few specific questions about Arlo Q camera system

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 04:06 PM PDT

Wife and i are temporarily relocating, but keeping our current apartment as we'll need back and forth some. Im looking at in-home camera systems, and the Arlo Q seems perfect, except there are reports that it disconnects from wifi frequently.

Anyone have experience with this? Is there any way to troubleshoot this remotely? Does it consistently recover on its own?

How about other issues i may run into trying to keep an eye on the house while I'm 2000 miles away for months at a time?

Any other suggestions for good 2-3 camera systems? We really can't do more than $400-ish right now

    Amiccom Cameras and Ispy

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 02:40 PM PDT

After MUCH Trifle and Tribulation I now have my cheapo chinese IP cams working. Here's how I did it!

On Ispy you create a new camera and go to the FFMPEG source and you'll need this address format rtsp://admin:PASSWORD@CAMERA IP ADDRESS:2600/ so you'll need to replace password and camera IP address with your information. Keep in mind that amiccom (I think they should have named it amiccam "a mic cam" app "JAWA" is junk, if you want to see cameras in HD you'll need to set recording to HD and then set it to view in HD when you go view the cameras live feed on the app.

If your cameras are 1080p you'll need to set the frame rate and the size in the source under advanced. I set mine to 1920 x 1080 and they look great.

I would also like to give a shout out to /u/D-efault for helping me make these cheap cameras pretty freaking awesome.

    Advice on indoor camera

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 02:36 PM PDT

The camera will sit on my window seal pointing at the front of my house. I just bought a Wyze camera but it started to make everything purple so I'm returning it.

I'm looking for something that has continuous recording, live view, and some kind of timeline where I can view past footage on my phone. I'd prefer something that doesn't stop working if the company servers go down (eufy). Any advice?

Camera storage question. Zoneminder or direct to nas?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 02:13 PM PDT

Is there any benefit to using Zoneminder, or something similar, to store the video vs pointing my cameras directly to the nas to store video?

All recording is set to be a continuous with no plans to mess with motion detection. Right now I'm setup with Zoneminder handling the recording but I feel like that might be adding a failure point. Would it be better to point the cameras to the nas directly and just use Zoneminder for live camera views?

Need help choosing a CCTV system for verification only

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 03:50 AM PDT

I have recently moved into a 5000 sqft home in Europe that has a DSC PC1832 alarm with 8 outdoor Optex VX-402 motion sensors. We have had several false alarms in the past month due to wind, cats etc. and when this happens it scares the shit out of us as we have no way to quickly verify whether its a false alarm or not. We have been warned that several sophisticated and armed gangs from eastern Europe operate in the area. My goal is to mitigate the risk of a potentially violent confrontation during a burglary, not prevent my property from being stolen. Obviously the most effective measure would be increasing the physical security of the property but we are currently renting and can't replace doors etc.

For this reason I would like to install CCTV to verify that there is indeed an intruder so we can take precautions as early as possible including locking ourselves in our room and calling the police. I don't therefor care about identifying the intruder, only that it is an intruder and not a cat or a tree blowing in the wind. I believe I will need around 8 cameras to cover the exterior.

Budget is max of $5000 for NVR, 8 cameras and installation, would love to spend less as it's not clear if we will require or reuse the system at the next house we move to.

So far I've found the following solutions but its not clear which would best fit my requirements.

    - Unifi protect (Unifi NVR + G4 cameras)
    - Blue Iris with low cost Chinese turret cams (Usually Dahau or Hikvision)
    - Milestone xProtect with Axis cams
    - Wisenet VMS + Axis cams

I don't like that unifi is closed and can't be interfaced with other home automation systems and their cameras never get great reviews. I installed Blue Iris on a VM to test it and it seems ok but I don't particularly want to setup and maintain a Windows server so that rules out Milestone as well. I don't trust the all-in-one NVR solutions from the Chinese camera's. So it would seem Wisenet VMS running on Linux with Axis cams may be the best however I never see anyone talking about this system so I feel like I'm probably going down the wrong path.

Any advice would be really appreciated!

    Yale Doorman v2n

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 11:53 AM PDT

Hello. Does anyone have any experience with this device? What are its weaknesses and strengths? Can it be hacked or skimmed easily? Disabled with a magnet a'la lockpickinglawyer?

I'm considering this product because of my kid, and it being time to change locks anyway. Seems like an OK deterrent as well as being liked by insurance companies.

Home defense for pacifists: What do you recommend?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:54 PM PDT

Hello, my wife would feel more secure in our home with a gun, but as a pacifist, I would not wish to kill my attacker. A pepper spray gun looks like an attractive way to incapacitate a person without taking their life. What would you recommend?

Can a knife be effective againist a big dog?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 11:39 AM PDT

Hey. I am a very short guy. A big dog is nearly taller than me if he stand on two feet. Yesterday, a very big dog (without any owner) jumped over my fence (probably searching for food). My little kid was plaiyng outside. The dog scared the shit out of my kid and we quickly entered the house to defend. The dog triyed yo bite us. I am very short so i can't do many things againist a big dog. Can i defeat him with a knife. I think that stabing him in the eyes can make him blind. Also, stabing him in the back of the neck can induce paralisys. The dog keep coming over and over especialy at night. Could i kill him with a knife or...?

Edit: also, sometimes i have to deal with big dogs outside my house. There are a lot of dogs without owner in my city. All what i have is a self defense knife. I can't carry an anti dog mace (pepper spray) because it's big and i can't carry it in my pocket. Could i defend myself with a knife without getting severe damage?

    Sorry for my sucky english.

Advice needed: SSD to replace WD Purple?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 08:53 PM PDT

I recently moved in to a complex of townhouses, and we have a central surveillance system that was set up years ago by a security company. The system is currently using a 3TB WD Purple that apparently has needed replacing twice since the system was set up (which works out to be around every second year). Each time it fails, the company charge us a few hundred to come and replace the drive.

I am wondering if we might not be better served replacing it with an SSD this time around? I know SSDs are not traditionally used for such high-volume write scenarios, but hear me out.

    WD Purple

    TB workload per year: 60TB

    Capacity: 3TB

    Price: ~130AUD

    Crucial MX500

TBW (total TB writes lifespan): 750TB

    Capacity: 2TB

    Price: 295AUD

    Installation: ~180AUD.

So I'm thinking based on the lifespans of the two drives, the Crucial should be good for ~12 years if you divide its total TBW by 60 (the approved yearly workload for the WD Purple). I don't anticipate actually meeting these numbers, so let's say instead of 12 years it lasts 6 years. If so, the cost every 6 years would be:

    WD Purple: 130*3+180*3 = 930AUD

    Crucial MX500: 295+180 = 475AUD

Has anyone already done something similar? How did you go?

    Anything I'm overlooking?

    Thank you!

    New home - security cameras?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 08:12 PM PDT

Whats going on everyone, hope yall well. Sorry if this is a bit wordy and longwinded. Basically I just moved from an apartment to a house. The house is in a much nicer area, but I still want to secure my home with cameras. I have been reading what I can find, but I am still not positive on what I really want. I recognize anything wired is going to be better then wifi, so I have accepted that. What I want is outdoor cameras. I want them to detect movement and have good quality video, night and day. I would like it to be cctv... but I also know there are other options that are similar? (Clearly I don't know). I do not want to pay a monthly fee (unless for cloud storage) and I do not want some company like ADP monitoring my cameras. I want to be able to monitor them myself. Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you!
