Posted: 10 Aug 2020 12:34 PM PDT I was wondering if there were any more recent threads (or other resources) on the tech side of home defense that any of you found to be particularly thorough or helpful. I'm completely new to even considering the topics in this sub, but so I don't want to jam y'all up with a bunch of basic questions. I tried to start at the wiki for a starting point on cameras specifically. But in addition to 7-8 years feeling a bit old for tech, many of the links in the threads I looked at were broken. I did look at top of past month and past year, but obviously I can't sort by topic. [link] [comments] |
Best place to have monitored smoke detectors? Posted: 10 Aug 2020 06:52 AM PDT I have nest smoke detectors throughout my house in every room pretty much However, I am away a fair amount, and want to add one smoke detector per floor that is monitored by ADT. Curious what would be the most efficient use? I was thinking hallways upstairs and main floor and one in the basement on the finished part but near the mechanicals ? [link] [comments] |
Piggybacking from existing door sensors Posted: 10 Aug 2020 11:19 AM PDT I have an Ademco Accord XPC system that's working well with a mixture of door contact reed switches and motion detectors, wired with EOL resistors. I want to run a red/green LED off one of the door contact sensors so we can see from inside the house if the garage door is open or closed. I think putting another voltage and resistive load in parallel with the existing wiring is going to cause issues with the resistive values the control panel is looking for and cause tamper issues. Any advice on the best way to do this? I could put together something with relays etc to isolate the two circuits, but I'd like to keep it as simple as possible. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Aug 2020 11:16 AM PDT I have bought several NightLock's, and they seem like they would clearly stop someone easily kicking in the door, but there is very little reviews of the product and I'm hesistant to recommend them to friends if there is no actual reviews. There are plenty of videos of people installing them, or saying they are great, but no one has had their door kicked in, so for all we know it just snaps off. There are reviews of the commercial product, but not the standard one The only video showing anything is uploaded by NightLock themselves, and have comments turned off... They did upload one of someone who apparently had one on a french door which shows video clips of a guy struggling (But eventually getting through), however you can't actually see if there actually was a Night Lock installed Warrior Poet Society seems to love them, and always mentions them, but again no review. I suspect he could be sponsored by them also, as a few of the things he has said seemed suspect, like when he mentions that "my SWAT team buddies hate them!" etc. Does anyone have any first hand experience? Maybe I should try kick in my garage door before I get a new one installed [link] [comments] |

Pros and cons of 24/7 recording vs. motion based recording Posted: 09 Aug 2020 04:33 PM PDT Hello, I just hooked up some PoE cameras yesterday and set it up as 24/7 recording for now. I did not set up any motion notifications yet. I only have 2TB that came with the NVR. So my question is: what are the pros and cons of each? Honestly, I don't see any inherent benefits to 24/7 recording vs. motion based recording as I will be seeing motion either way. The only difference in my mind is that 24/7 recording would eat up my HDD pretty quickly. Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm new to this as I had Arlo cameras before hooking this system up. Thanks [link] [comments] |
