I see alot of posts recommending PoE and not anything wireless, what about the installation part?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 10:39 PM PDT

People usually go for wireless for ease of setup, but I would like some recommendations or help regarding, wiring and setting up.

Already installed CCTV problems: Disabled person being harassed & CCTV not working

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 03:49 AM PDT

I'll try to keep this brief and to the point. Friend of mine has run into some trouble. Advice would be really helpful.

Camera captures video but the sound often drops off. It worked for about a week but doesn't anymore despite the connection pulling 200+kb/s through wifi/app. He's done everything he can think of to resolve the problem including turning it off and on at the mains. Nothing is working.

Is there a way to change the settings on the WiFi that could fix this problem? Is there anything else that he should be trying to resolve the problem?

I don't know much about these things and neither does he, not sure what to look for or what to do. If there's info that's required that I've not provided please ask. Thanks

Background if necessary: Friend who has a cognitive impairment (was recently assaulted leaving him with brain injury) has a wifi cam set up on the advice of the police and council. It's to capture harassment he's been receiving by neighbours and kids.

    Question about blank rounds

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 06:20 AM PDT

If this is not the best place to ask let me know. Got to thinking about a home intruder scenario. I have home insurance and would plan to hold my bedroom secure and let insurance cover the house. If I were to have a blank to fire off to warn an intruder I was armed, then warn them not to enter my room (and call 911), would that be 1. A bad move, and/or 2. Illegal to fire assuming the intruder took some stuff and left without confronting me. Not asking for professional legal advice, but just if someone has knowledge about this . An alternative I suppose would be to just rack the slide "loudly".Just thinking...thanks.

Car stolen TWICE - prevention tips

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 05:17 PM PDT

My mom's car (2007 Honda Civic in beater condition) was stolen from in front of our house and recovered the next morning. We got it home, parked it on the driveway, and in less time than we could get a locksmith it was gone again. We had hoped it would just be another joyride, but 7 weeks later had given up hope. It was finally recovered again last night, not starting, and we've had it towed to a Honda service center.

    So far our ideas are:

    - steering wheel lock

    - remove the battery until further notice

    - rekey (this doesn't seem helpful given that they're entering and driving without a key)

    - security cameras

Witnesses say it was teenagers (and their candy trash seems to support). Police aren't investigating and even if they were, they are not arresting or prosecuting anything small-time right now with COVID-19 and local police brutality protests. My neighbors saw a kid on a bike in our driveway today, and clearly whoever did it was brazen enough to walk onto our driveway already. I don't want to get into a battle of outwitting a teenager with nothing but time. What suggestions do you, the good people of reddit, have to shut this shit down?

Thoughts on creating a safe shop of the future

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 06:13 AM PDT

Given pandemics, economic depression, and riots the future may be bleak. I'd be more inclined to run an Internet - Delivery style business. But given that I'd like shops to survive I'd like to hear a way of making them safer.

My first thought, Industrial turn stiles, the front glass displays are sealed behind a brick wall. At the turn stile an eye level CCTV camera is situated. It doesn't let you in until your face is recorded. Inside the shop floor is a clear space. The products, staff, and paypoints are behind toughened perspex screens. A customer asks the staff member to get the item and its pushed through a deposit box similar to banks. After work the goods are on wheeled shelves that are moved underground into a purpose built sealed bunker area.

During business hours there are two shotguns, one less lethal, the other lethal. And a tear gas canister. A hidden exit to the roof is available.
