What was a close call that made you say “never again” to being careless? Posted: 10 Jan 2021 06:37 PM PST Around Thanksgiving, I was upstairs with our new baby changing a diaper. I hear the front doorbell ring, and after another ring my 7 year old daughter yells to me that someone is at the front door. I come down and the man at the door seemed very sketchy. He also knocked over Thanksgiving holiday and said they were from the power company doing a survey on clean energy and left really quickly without giving any information. Seems kind of doubtful, but at first I don't think much of this because I was still in baby care mode but a short while later I think that this person could have been knocking to see if anyone was home over the holiday. I then realize 1) my older child was playing alone by the front door 2)I left it completely unlocked and all he needed to do was decide to turn the handle if no one answers. I am now overzealous about keeping doors secured, particularly if I'm doing something upstairs or in the basement while my kids are on the ground floor. Anyone else have a close call or wake up moment? [link] [comments]

Recommendation for good quality 3" screws for reinforcing door Posted: 11 Jan 2021 09:35 AM PST Can someone please recommend a brand and type of 3" screws that I can use to reinforce my deadbolt and reinforcement door latch? I bought 3" Everbilt brand screws from Home Depot but their heads broke off while screwing them in using my impact driver. I also couldn't pre-drill a pilot hole 3" deep because my drill bit isn't long enough. So, are there special screws that I should be using with my impact driver that also self-drill? Thanks! Best door barricade system for an apartment? Posted: 11 Jan 2021 07:14 AM PST Hi, I'm trying to find a viable removable barricade for my apartment door. It's the only entrance. Saw the DoorJammer, that thing looks gimmicky. There's the NightLock but I have to modify the door and floor and I can't do that. Then there are those Y-handle braces that go under the door handle, not sure about those. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks! [link] [comments]

Not sure of optimal place to place PoE cameras in front? Posted: 11 Jan 2021 05:10 AM PST Hey guys, I'm currently building a new construction and thinking of asking my low-voltage guy to place ethernet cables outside for PoE cameras. I attached a picture of both front and back of my house (based on model house, but same exterior structure). For the back area, I figured I'll place one camera in the corner of the outdoor deck facing the back entrance door (circled it with red - I heard it was good to place it perpendicular or not directly in front of the entrance?) But I'm little confused for the front area. Any suggestions based on the image? I was thinking two for front: one on directly on top of middle of garage to monitor driveway, and somewhere near the porch but where? Should I place it on top of the front door or place it in the corner of the porch on the other side? Or somewhere else? Any suggestion is appreciated. Thank you! Posted: 10 Jan 2021 06:20 PM PST I have this guy coming to my house and destroys shit at night and then run home (2 minutes from here). Last week it was a car-glass that cost ~250usd to fix. I have installed a camera for the drive way but I have nothing for the rest of the house or lawn. I know who he is but the cops does nothing without hard proof. Last time I got him on camera but he had a mask. What would u do within the laws-limits? I cant get a gun here and my budget is minimum... [link] [comments]
Best and easiest route for a beginner? Posted: 10 Jan 2021 05:53 PM PST I'm about to be a new homeowner this week and have lived in apartments and a condo where I basically just had a camera that I would have facing my front door in the evenings. We're moving to a new home with a large yard in a suburban area. Crime rates are low, but I still want to be prepared with a system. We have four main windows and a front door and porch sliding door that could be accessed. What is the easiest and best option for someone who doesn't have the time to self install and such? My sister in law recommended ADT as that's what they use and it was easy to set up. I know ADT is likely pricier than other options. Key needs 1) camera system, probably front door and back door at the least and maybe garage 2) panic button / alerting the authorities, whatever system can do that successfully 3) probably sensors on all possible break in locations (6 things then?) Truly that's all I know of. I like having video since I've had a random one for the last 3 years for my apartments Seriously, a company with install that's not super dumb expensive or if there's a GOOD brand product of self-install that works well My parents who live a state away have Arlo cameras but that's it, no sensors etc [link] [comments] |
