Student worried about home invasion being home alone covid 19

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 06:32 PM PST

I live in a shared home for students and currently as its December all have now left for holidays or for a new accommodation into the next year.

I personally cant leave to go home this year, I am the only one remaining still in the house. Im grateful for the silence and having the place much cleaner now being alone, but Im still having to study, do online tests and do projects but its hard to focus with my anxiety jumping at any noise or foreign speaking going around the neighbourhood late at night.

Im really not prepared in the event of if somebody decided to burglar this place. Im living in a foreign country with one of the highest crime rates and im currently staying in a residents that doesnt appear the most safest.

The last time I was alone and heard noises of somebody entering I rang up my landlord and he said to call the emergency police. Nobody picked up... Eventually somebody did but nobody ever came, only luck for me then was that it turned out to be another housemate who had to return briefly.

I have no relationship with the neighbours. The security here isnt much at all, im so worried. The back kitchen door light is out, my kitchen lights been out for weeks now my landlord doesnt really value urgency or going the extra mile, he does the least effort and just expects rent every month.

There's no alarm system. Just a pad locked front door and front gate. All the other students rooms are locked so I cant even really switch on the lights of the other rooms at night to deter burglars away. My room is in the corner of the house. I cant see anything going on in the yard at all. I cant really exit in the event of someone entering. (Or atleast not quietly as Id have to jump through the side glass window. The other side of the window that opens, is barred up, blocking potential thieves from outside entering in but also stops me exiting.)

I dont really have anyone I could stay over by for this month and also dont feel comfortable risking getting covid myself if I were to go to stay at so called friends place.

Im so worried about my belongings, my laptop and other things ive worked so hard to purchase. Im worried for my own safety. I don't know how to protect myself or if im manifesting a burglary just by posting this. I don't have any money really to waste at the moment on security systems or lightings.

Please someone give me advice or direction. Where could I get a good weapon to defend myself in the event of a burglary. Anything. Please. Thank you for reading.

    Entry delay DSC1832

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 07:31 PM PST

The minimum entry delay on the DSC1832 is 45 seconds. I know I can set the entry door to be an instant alarm but there isn't an in between instant and 45 seconds? A 45 second delay an intruder can easily run through my house and try to find my alarm system before the alarm goes out. Any other option?

Security cam options without the internet

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 06:44 PM PST

My wife's aunt lives in the country and doesn't have access to the internet. Is there some way to set up some security cams that don't require the internet access?

    Video from the car...

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 01:16 PM PST

After seeing another video on Ring of people going through neighborhoods trying car door handles to see if they're unlocked, something dawned on.

Typically those videos are either from their doorbell camera or a camera mounted up on the corner of their house. Great view to show the overall scene and what's happening, but faces are tough to see.

Two solutions to getting a good face picture came to me.

1.Setup a camera inside your vehicle. I tested a Wyze camera I had laying around, put it in my truck and it connected to WiFi and started capturing video. It draws 2-4 watts of power, so I'd need to start the truck every day or two to make sure it doesn't drain the battery.

    1. When I was setting up that Wyze camera I was moving the power plug for my dashcam and it dawned on my that some dash cams have a parking mode where they record continuously even when parked. I checked and sure enough my Garmin 46 dashcam records the video out the front of my truck all the time, even when parked. I have a huge memory card, so it doesn't delete and overwrite the video too soon. So if something were to happen, I could pull video going back a day or two and it might have saved a motion capture too.

Also, please just keep your doors locked and they'll stop doing this eventually. They only do it because people leave cars unlocked with valuables in them and they can get an easy score on some change or something more. If it stops working for them, they'll stop doing it.

    Replace alarm with strobe

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 09:39 PM PST

We have a security system monitored by xfinity (Comcast). There is an alarm speaker in the entry hallway. My wife doesn't want it and we would like to replace it with a security strobe light. Is this possible and if so what would be the best choice?

    Is this Vivint stuff junk?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 07:45 PM PST

Hi, I've tried to google the information but haven't found much. If there's any hope I can get specific model numbers.

I bought a house that was previously on a Vivint plan. It has a smart hub panel and a number of door/window sensors, motion, glass break, etc. I just don't want to use Vivint.

Is it possible to flash new firmware to the panel or connect their sensors to other ways of monitoring? TIA

Help needed to calculate power load of Vista 21p burglar system

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 03:04 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I am designing a burglar alarm system using Vista 21p system with 28 motion sensors and other peripherals. I'm reading the manual on how to calculate the amount of power needed to support this system (auxiliary system output limit= 600 mA) and have 24h backup. But I am a bit unsure if I've understood everything correctly, so I am asking for some help.

    The system would consist of:

    3 x 4219 expansion cards = 3 x 35mA = 105 mA

    1 x1660 keypad = 1 x 100 mA= 100 mA

    2 x wave 2F sirens = 2 x 500mA = 1000mA

    2 x strobe lights = 2 x 250 mA = 500 mA

    1 x CE3 code encryptor 3 = 1 x 6.5ma = 6.5 mA

First off should the motion sensors power draw also be included in calculation?

Even without taking in account The design already well above the 600 mA limit?

What can I do in such a case should I use a new system?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Get a Honeywell VISTA-20p with EnvisaLink or VISTA-21iP?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 06:39 AM PST

I'm considering these two solutions. Which has better app integration, allowing me to monitor and control the system through a smartphone?

I'm also interested in hearing options on the 6160RF keypad. In particular, how well does the wireless receiver work across multiple floors? Would I be better off installing a 5881enh receiver back at the panel?

Locking a bike up in external storage room

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 05:35 AM PST

    Hi all,

I've got a new mountain bike coming which cost me an arm and a leg which I need to lock up every night in an external cupboard (I'm going to try and upload a picture below). It has a wooden door with a standard door lock, concrete floor inside and plaster walls on ceiling and sides. It's the width of the door and maybe 2m long so quite small.

    I was thinking either;-

    1. An anchor to the floor which I can chain the bike to
    2. Another large lock on the door (might draw attention though)
    3. A hinged bar that is anchored to both walls that you put straight through the middle of the frame

I would love some advice or recommendations if someone could be so kind!

    Cheers
