    Security Camera Recommendation

I'm looking to gift my father a camera to surveil his garage. It's about 150 ft/45 m from the house (WiFi and power). Any thoughts on a longer range option?

    Late Night Knocking and Disappearance

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 02:22 PM PST

For the past couple of days I've been noticing someone knocking at my front door at the late hours of around 11pm/12am. I didn't notice it at first but after finally seeing a person at my front porch I've decided to come here and ask for suggestions. For info, I'm a college student currently living with my parents (older folks).

It may not have been the same person as before, but definitely around the same hours of night and knocking that progressively gets louder when no one answers. Last night, I was working in a well lit area of the house when I hear this knocking. I don't answer the door because I don't feel safe doing so by myself. Also a bit cautious of home invasion in general. But the lights are on, so they know someone is inside. They keep knocking for about 5 minutes straight and at this point I want to see who it is. I turn the lights off in the room that looks out onto the porch to see if I can peek without being noticed, but this guy is standing there with his phone in his hand and something else in his other hand (couldn't make it out), and he waves at me frantically when he sees me look out. I don't interact, just go upstairs to get my father. By the time my father gets to the door, unlocks it and turns off alarm, the guy is gone. As in, nowhere to be found. Not seen down the entire block or even in one of the cars parked on the street. A bit freaked out about it, given that I remember a similar pattern earlier this week.

Should I convince my parents to look into a security system/maybe a Ring?

    Access control for residential homes?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 02:00 PM PST

I'm looking for something that can't be picked. My doors are hardened but that doesn't mean my locks can't be picked. I figured that an access control system using RFID cards (liek what I have at work) is the best system.

Anyone have experience or advice for residential access control systems?

I have an opportunity to work for Alarm.com ... should I take it?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 07:55 AM PST

I notice on this subreddit that people are often critical of alarm.com. It kinda makes me second guess working for them because I don't want to join a company that's not headed in the right direction.

I'm half asking whether you all think it would be a good move to work for alarm.com and half asking why exactly so many of you don't like it ahahah.

    Help?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 08:02 PM PST

So I live in Alberta Canada and have recently had a break in at a cabin that's on some land we own and I'm just wondering if there are any cameras that don't need internet have back up power or are solar and that I'd be able to check either on my phone or three a website. Any info would be much appreciated thank you.

    Can ADT/Xfinity/ATT Use Security Prewire?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2020 07:59 PM PST

I'm currently building a home and need to make the call on security prewiring. For $400 I can get the basic prewiring for the exteriors doors etc.

I know I want a centrally monitored system. I don't want to spend money on prewiring if ADT/Xfinity/ATT would just come in and throw in wireless sensors anyways.

Should I do it considering I know I want a centrally monitored system?
