In plain sight, vendors or products?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 04:33 AM PST

Im looking for a vendor or product line to meet the following requirements: outdoor, weatherproof, battery powered, IR night vision, images to local SD, multiple (burst) image capture from single motion event, camouflage or concealable in plain sight.

The most important of these is concealment in plain sight, or camouflage in a row of bushes.

What are options outside of Trail Cams?

NVR or server software with PTZ control?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2020 12:12 AM PST

Is there a NVR or server software that, with the help of onvif standard, can control a PTZ camera based on detected motion?

I know many cameras has this built in, but if the motion detection sucks in the camera and there is a software that is more accurate to detect, it would be awesome if it could control the camera and follow the motion based on this?

ZoneMinder + Intel Compute + Lighweight Linux Distro + 256gb Micro SD Card + Webcam = Great home security system

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 07:46 PM PST

The only thing that costs you is the Intel Compute stick and the SD Card and Webcam all of which you can get for cheap. But this is a wired solution, not wireless cameras. Another person on this sub wanted an update from me so I am giving an update to my final best solution. It is great if you just want 1 or more cameras that you can connect via USB into the Compute Stick.

    https://zoneminder.com/features/

A guide for installing Linux, it mentions Ubuntu but you can just substitute for one of the other linux Distros that are light weight and allow the Compute stick to run fast and better than the Windows IOT version it came with. The compute stick takes SSD and you can throw in it the 256gb so you can record for a very long time. Zoneminder software that you can install on the Linux has the option to record on motion detection events or upon seeing people so you shouldn't easily run out of storage.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMhRD7SaLiA

Here is the Linux distros reviews and links. A lot of the light weight distros don't take up much space from you.

    https://www.techradar.com/news/best-lightweight-linux-distro

Here is mine, but this is before I switched to ZoneMinder. I am almost finished with my new setup.

You can always connect a USB port hub to the IntelCompute stick which gives it more ports availability so you can connect more cameras that you can face towards different places. You can also use IP camera with ZoneMinder.

Second owner of DSC PK5508 no master code please help

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 01:19 PM PST

Hi i just moved in to a new place where the previous owner had forgotten the master code for the DSC keypad.

I had accidentally trigger the siren and had no choice but to shut down the whole power supply to keep it quiet.

I also did some research and had tried both default code 1111 and 1234, also tried # and then *2 to view the problem the siren still went off after the delay time.

Called the maintenance company it would cost 85/hr to have them come.

Is there any other solution to this please help ! Also the strata did not give an answer either so I am stuck.

There is also something about the installer code where it can be 5555, or others. Haven't tried it yet since there can be many default installer codes.

    Appreciate it!!

Help with Contrast Setting - DSC PK5501

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 12:38 PM PST

I just moved into a house with a DSC PK5501 keypad in the bedroom and the brightness is making it hard for me to sleep. I've attempted to lower the brightness by pressing *6, mastercard, and then toggling with the right arrow which DOES change the brightness. However once I have 0 brightness selected and press #, it does not save my choice. Does anyone know how to solve this? Thanks!

    Help with simple motion sensor

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 11:52 AM PST

I work in an office setting with several doors to different areas of the building. All outside entrances are kept locked except when we have an event. But there is a back section to the building that is used at certain days/times during the week and I would like to know if someone (a certain someone, to be specific) is coming into the office suite from that back section. (This person isn't my boss, by the way, so this isn't a ULPT request. I just want time to steel myself because this guy is a pain in the butt.)

What I really want is just a motion detector that will sit unobtrusively in the corner and when a person walks through that room it will trigger a little chirp or light or something so I know they're about to come through the door. I don't need to see who it is (I already know) or anything like that. Just so I know they're on the way. Range about 10 to 15 yards. Must pass through a closed metal door.

I don't know where to begin looking. My budget is minimal. I want to be able to cheaply and simply do this, no fuss, no muss, not much money spent.

Any ideas for an applicable device?

    DSC Zones Open

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 03:05 PM PST

I have a DSC 1832 panel that I installed. No matter what I do the zones show open. I've tried resistors and just closed loops and programed them all the different options but they still show open. I even made a few of the null zones but they still show open no matter what I do.

Camera recommendation for single remote camera?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 05:08 PM PST

Hello everyone, i'm hoping some of yall might be able to help me with some camera recommendations. My mom and a small handful of other houses live on a gated road, and they'd like to put a camera up at their gate to monitor cars as they come and go, and possibly also get alerts.

I'm planning on using a cellular modem with an unlimited data plan, so if possible i'd like a camera with local storage that is accessed through an app, that does not require a separate DVR/NVR, and that only uploads a stream when someone is trying to access footage (or uploading clips of motion would be ok too). I'll be mounting everything except the camera in an external weatherproof enclosure, so i won't have a lot of space and it won't stay cool enough during the summer (i'm in the south) to run a PC.

I have several blue iris systems i could tie this into, but i don't think i'd be able to do that without constantly streaming the camera through a VPN across the internet, which i'd like to avoid.

I looked at Arlo Go, but having to periodically charge the camera is not an option, and a permanent non-weatherproofed microUSB port just doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

    Any ideas? Please and thanks

Edit- the gate is too far from any of the houses for a wifi bridge or a direct connection. Cellular is the only connectivity option

    Ideas for security system

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 08:48 AM PST

Hello - I need some help deciding on which surveillance camera I should get and that would suit my needs. The main purpose is to keep tabs on our vehicles at night. This is my first time looking into surveillance cameras and I'm a bit overwhelmed. I wish I could just purchase a relatively inexpensive wireless system and call it good, but I think I need something that's more powerful and long range.
    A little background info:
Only option to park our cars is on the street and in the past few months, our cars have been getting broken into at night. Most recently and serious, someone jacked up my car and stole the catalytic converter. Other times, doors have been opened and stuff rummaged thru inside (yes, we lock our car doors). During the winter months, our city has an alternate-side parking ordinance. The straight-line distance from our house to across the street is around 25 yards.
Our house is relatively old and our front door light doesn't work -- not a bulb issue, but probably wiring/electrical issues.
I'm thinking here are my needs:
    * night vision up to 25-40 yards.
    * 24/7 recording capability
    * no cloud-only storage or subscription only service
    * easy installation for a noob
I almost purchased an outdoor wireless system, like an Arlo with a spotlight, but wireless cameras only operate on motion(?), which I don't think would suit my needs. Plus, when parking across the street, the sensor would at least need to have a 25 yard range and shoot well enough in the dark to capture details at this range.
Thinking outside the box, I thought about an indoor or simple AC plug-in system that I can set by a window and set to shoot outside at night. I'd lose the deterrent factor, like the lights, siren, etc.. but at least I'd be able to capture the incident (probably after it happened which kinda defeats the purpose when I think about it).
Another idea would be to purchase good aftermarket car alarms. Most of our cars are older (1999 - 2010). Buying for all our cars might be expensive.
Any thoughts or recommendations are welcomed. Thanks!

Bought a House, What is this Camera?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 04:41 AM PST

    << SOLVED, THANKS EVERYONE! >>

Morning, fellow home security enthusiasts. We bought our house and after moving in noticed this camera outdoors. No mention was made of it at any point, so.. looks like it's ours now.

    Here's a photo: https://imgur.com/gallery/AgZRF3M

It appears to be powered by a Cat5 connection switching to a power source in my garage, which leads me to believe it's a WiFi camera.

Does anyone know what brand / make I have on my hands here?

Should I replace Logi Circle with Nest Cam IQ? (outdoor)

    Posted: 02 Dec 2020 04:04 AM PST

    Hello all,

I have two Logi Circle 2 cameras installed outside and I am thinking about replacing them with Nest Cam IQ cameras.

I find that the Circle cameras are okay, but don't provide enough clarity that I would like, especially at night. We recently purchased a Nest Hello and I've been very impressed with it. The clarity seems more on par with what I expect and the GUI in the app seems more fluid.

I pay for the 30 day storage with Logitech but there isn't 24/7 continuous recording - only motion activated, which I know I would get with a Nest Aware subscription instead.

Drawbacks of the Nest cam include a narrower viewing angle so I would possibly need three cameras or at least to reposition them in order to cover the property adequately.

I am wondering if anyone here has used both products and can comment on which they prefer and why?

    Thanks in advance.
