IP CAMERA NOOB HELP!! HikVision? Uniview? Dahua? NVR DVR?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 10:42 AM PST

Hello! Me and my family are on the hunt for a good CCTV/IP camera system and I've been the one tasked to do the research and it's all making my head spin a bit. I'm currently looking into the brands HikVision, Dahua, and Uniview, any thoughts on these brands and current preferences?

Also have a few other questions, please forgive me if these sound basic or dumb 😬

    1. Would (let's say) a 2MP HikVision running on a DVR have lower quality than a 2MP Dahua running on an NVR? I saw that the NVR system produces better video quality which is why I am leaning towards it

    2. All of the HikVision IP Camera packages I've seen come with a DVR. But it says online that IP Cameras run on NVR while Analog ones run on DVR. Does this mean HikVision is an analog camera? Why does it say it's an IP cam?

    3. Can I run any IP cam on an NVR? I've been looking into buying the sets/packages online so I don't have to think about all the components but I'm not seeing a package with my current specs (8CH NVR, 4-5MP)

    4. If I buy separate HikVision IP cams and a HikVision NVR, would that still work? Given that all the HikVision ones I've seen are paired with DVRs.....

    5. Do I need a Poe switch?

Thanks in advance for any tech people out there!!!!

    Gate latch security?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 12:31 PM PST

I'm looking to ditch the standard padlock from my backdoor gate and move towards something 'connected' or at the very least with a key pad on it for access.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've searched for pool gates, etc but would really love something thats 'connected' so we don't have to fiddle with keys or codes.

The gate is similar to this one: https://homedepot.scene7.com/is/image/homedepotcanada/p_1001033301_alt_STANTON+ARCHED+GATE+LS.jpg?op_sharpen=1

and uses a latch very similar to this: https://www.boerboelgatesystems.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/73002252_GravityLatchWeb1.jpg

    Thanks!

    Break in/Stalker help

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:23 PM PST

    Hi,

First off, not related to me, instead my girlfriends sister.

Would appreciate some advice on how to proceed. As well as other subs to post in. My Girlfriends sister, lives in a college town with a few other roommates.

Over the course of the last week or so, she's started getting phone calls from a man saying "he can provide", saying he "would do anything for her", and that he loves her. Getting a perfume in the mail called Calvin Klein "obsession". He's admitted that he's sent the perfume and therefor knows the address. He said he found her on social media, and calls her multiple times a day.

In regards to being in the actual apartment - they had an anime show playing on the TV when they got home (none of them watch that). Later on he referenced that exact show in his phone call. Thermostat has been turned up to 85 degrees in the middle of the night, and she has reported missing clothing items from room.

Police have said that they can't do anything unless someone is threatened or harmed.

    Thank you!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:38 AM PST

    Hello dear Redditors,

I bought my self two Dahua SD59225U-HNI ip cameras and found out they don't have P2P? So I wanted to buy a NVR that is capable of such and has a nice remote view app. Is there anything like that available to purchase? And I am sorry for my english, I am from germany.

    Yours faithfully

    Father keeps getting robbed!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:16 PM PST

Hello. My dad has an issue that I hope you can give me some guidance on. He lives in a very rural area of town and has been the victim of several burglaries. The things that are being stolen from him are located in a barn about 50 yard from his house. He wants to install security cameras inside the barn to try and catch the thief on film. I'd love some ideas as to what kind of system I could purchase to install for him. The barn is wired for electricity, but no internet if that helps. Thanks in advance.

Edit: We want to use video cameras. He is using game trail cameras now, but really wants to upgrade.

Woman buying first home. These are the things I need to do first..

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:53 PM PST

I have an alarm system but I still want to do everything I can to secure the house.

First up are the entry doors. I want the front and side doors to be extremely secure. I plan on replacing both of the doors since they aren't heavy, quality doors (in my opinion).

I also thought about getting swing latches for the door as well.

I also have 2 French doors that I really feel uncomfortable with because they doors just seem thinner and flimsier than a standard door.
    They swing open inside.
Honestly I will probably put an indoor camera to point just at this door as well. Something inexpensive since it's just for inside (already have cameras in this area on the outside).

The home has exterior cameras but I plan on adding more. They are some nooks and crannies outside that will need lighting -either motion or spotlights because they are the darkest corners.

What are your suggestions for things I should do first once I move in?

    Sincere Question About Residential Cameras

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 06:28 PM PST

My subdivision has been "visited" late at night rather frequently over the past few years by lone people (probably the same couple of guys) breaking into cars after first checking if they're locked. Frustrating, sure, but I also figure that if you leave your cars unlocked when it's widely known that the neighborhood is prone to car B and Es, then shame on you. Local sheriff's deputies try to arrive timely when called, but usually it's way too late, dude has split. One suspect was arrested following an incident, but the break-ins didn't stop. Since this began, lots of residents purchased and installed cameras pointed at their driveway. Also, one of those neighborhood websites has been started, and it's become little more than a popular platform for locals to post footage of the B and E attempts on their own driveway. To my question, finally: What does a reasonable person hope to achieve by investing in and installing a driveway camera? I can sort of see the value of a doorbell ("Ring") camera as one means of trying to ID a porch package thief if one chooses to peruse prosecution. But an outdoor camera for middle-of-the-night car break-ins strikes me as little more than theater – not the kind meant to prevent an incident, but more like entertainment and morning-after social media chatter for the camera owners. What's the point; am I missing something? I feel like I must be overlooking something here. Thanks.

    DH-XVR5104HS-X recorder

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 05:11 AM PST

I have this recorder, information is very scarce. 2 cameras, Cooper Series | DH-HAC-B2A21 The first issue, it records in .DAV, found this script to convert: for i in .dav; do ffmpeg -i "$i" "${i%.}.mp4"; done this creates an .mp4 file, doesn't seem to be anything there, I see no video in vlc. Is there another method I can try? I have access to the dvr web portal via lan, I see no other method to allow access to the dvr, no ssh, no remote file browsing. How can I download the recorded files? Thanks

    Cameras too high?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:10 AM PST

The previous owners had an old camera system installed in the eaves of the house, but its a tall house, so most of the cameras about 25 feet high. The cameras are outdated, but luckily they used cat5 wiring that I could repurpose. Are cameras at that height useless? I worry that all I would be able to see from that angle is the color and model of a car. Maybe someone's hat.

The previous owners also installed hideous 400w metal halide commercial lighting under the eaves that lights up the outside of the house like a parking lot. Unfortunately the lights come on too slowly to be useful from a security perspective, but I was thinking of swapping some of the ones on the corners for Ring's hardwired floodlight cameras. (I already have Ring cameras on the outside and pay for their annual fee). Once again, are cameras that high up pointless?

Ring Doorbell 3 Plus Owner -- get more ring cameras or wyze cameras? or something else/

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 05:27 PM PST

Got in on a sweet deal for the Ring 3 Plus Doorbell camera and have yet to set it up or even open the box. I have an existing old school doorbell and would probably pay an electrician to install the ring 3 doorbell plus.

Also bought one of these Wyze Cam 1080p HD Indoor WiFi Smart Home Camera with Night Vision, 2-Way Audio, Works with Alexa & the Google Assistant, White, 1-Pack for really cheap as well. Was planning on using that outside on the backdoor where I have an outlet immediately next to it and a nice overhang on the house so I wouldn't worry about moisture/rain (I do the same thing with an alexa dot outside and it works great.).

Anyway I don't know much about this kinda stuff but am pretty tech savvy. I have the tinycam pro app installed. Also own one echo show if that changes anything.

There is a thread for a v3 wyze camera and one year of monitoring here on slickdeals -- is this something to jump on?

    Many thanks!

next question is: would it be better to just get ring cameras going forward, or use it just as the doorbell camera/intercom and then get wyze cameras as security cameras (post one at front door and one in the back door)?

Is it possible to a connect Reolink camera via my routers’s guest access?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 05:15 PM PST

I keep reading that I should connect security cameras through my router's guest access for better security. My reolink camera works fine through my regular WiFi access, but won't connect at all through the guest access. Is it possible to connect to a guest network with these cameras, or any of them for that matter?
