Do high-end or “good” residential security service providers exist?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 07:27 AM PST

I bought a house recently. It has a bunch of ADT gear leftover from the previous owner. After reading this sub, however, I've become so discouraged from using them that I don't know what to do at this point.

The sub has a DIY attitude and that is great for folks willing to take the plunge, but I would much rather pay someone to install the gear and manage, monitor, and support it. (EDIT: I don't mean anything more involved than what ADT offers residential clients, not active monitoring of video feeds)

So my question is, do premium residential "managed" service providers exist? I'm in Portland, OR and the house is just under 2,000 sq. ft. As for budget, no idea what security systems costs but ideally I'd spend $350 a month and no more than $500 a month for basic video surveillance and window/door intrusion alarms.

Anyone here have experience with Lorex 8 channel dvr 4k cameras? Looking for recommendations.

Costco has these on sale. This would be my first camera system. Are they any good? I'm not looking for high end professional quality or anything like that. Just a few cams around the exterior of my home. Hoping someone here has them and can recommend for or against. Thanks

    Options for entry system

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 05:05 PM PST

Moving into family land and they have a gate but don't have a keypad/entrance system setup anymore. We want to set something up so the gate can be used again when we move in.

Our house will be close enough that I can get WiFi to the gate. I believe they previously had some type of keypad and SIP setup.

A camera system would be nice but not needed. Want to be able to notify the appropriate home of entry request.

No idea what is out there what we can do. I don't mine programming stuff if we can do something with Raspberry pi or something. I'm going to have BlueIris setup on a server for my cameras too. Just not sure where to start.

    Thanks.

Suggestions for PoE camera(s) to cover 140° view of road and capture license plates?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 10:03 AM PST

    Here's the view: https://imgur.com/a/Z1y1z7B

Here's the view with the existing cameras: https://imgur.com/yviOMbd

I currently have a couple crappy Arlo 1080p WiFi cameras watching the road. I can almost make out license plates of vehicles driving by, so I think upgrading to 4K and a wired connection will take care of that.

I'd really like just a single camera there, but I haven't found anything that I think will work. Doesn't have to be discrete at all since I'd prefer people know it's there.

I don't need much detail at the ends of the road, just enough for activity to be detected reliably. No PTZ needed either.

Future plans are for Blue Iris and Home Assistant integration, so I'm avoiding more specialized cameras that might have compatibility issues.

    Power for BlueADT keypad (lifeshield)

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 03:52 PM PST

I have a BluebyADT (formerly lifeshield) keypad. I am missing the power cord for the keypad. Are these universal? What are the specifications so I can buy a replacement? ADT has been no help.

Self monitoring home security system with automated schedule?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 01:04 PM PST

I'm looking for a home security system I can set up myself and will alarm if intruders try to enter, but do not want a subscription based monitoring system. I'm looking for one where you can schedule the activation/deactivation of an alarm so it activates in the evening while we're sleeping and deactivates in the morning before we wake up. I looked and some of the large systems like Simplisafe and Abode don't seem to have this feature. If I'm misinformed on that, please let me know. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    "smart" LOUD siren

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 11:36 AM PST

    Good morning,

I currently own a kangaroo security system with a combo of wyze and nest cams.

I am very satisfied with my setup but I would like to add a loud siren to the setup. I dont need something that is automatically activated, just a loud indoor or outdoor siren that I can active remotely. Does this exist?

and yes, I already have the siren on the kangaroo but it s not really loud.

    Thanks!!

Best option for POE pan+tilt cameras?

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 06:55 AM PST

Also what's the best way to set up access to the camera feeds? Should I buy some kind of dedicated security appliance or is there and off the shelf software product I can pair with a POE switch?

Trying to figure out which cameras and/or system to buy.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 10:37 AM PST

ADT offered me home security for 55$ a month.

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 09:44 AM PST

I just moved in to a house and ADT came to the door and offered me a security package for 55$ a month, with no installation cost or activation cost. Looking through this sub a bit, it seems like that's higher than most other plans. But as someone who doesn't own any of my own security equipment, would it be worth it? It seems that with a lot of the other companies, I'd have to buy my own equipment. Also, they said the equipment would be mine, so I can keep it even if I cancel, but is this equipment useful without ADT? Does it only work with their system, or could I have a use for it even without them?

    Alarm System Wiring Question

    Posted: 27 Nov 2020 08:14 AM PST

I have a DSC alarm keypad with four wires (red, black, green and white) and I would like to repurpose these keypad wires to run a 12V siren and strobe.

Can the white / green cables be used to carry power as well if I hook them up to a 12V power source?

    Thanks!
