Need alarm.com window/door sensors Posted: 05 Oct 2020 10:40 PM PDT I need to add 8 more window sensors to my home. Where can I find them for a decent price? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 06:17 PM PDT I'm torn between the two systems. On one hand I know simplisafe has a good track record. On the other hand rings monthly cost is much cheaper, and Amazon tends to update things a bit quicker. Opinions? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Need new system or upgrade - what would be the best? Posted: 05 Oct 2020 05:38 PM PDT I currently have Vivint for my alarm system and I have my own wireless cameras that are spotty since my router upgrade. My door sensors and motion detector have been going off line and then re-connecting - I'm assuming it is also due to my new router. I have a call into ADT to come out and give me a consultation, but is there a DIY system that would work well? I am having a difficult time finding a wifi camera system that records without using the PoE cords. I have outlets for the power supply to the cameras, but I need the connection to be wireless. Any suggestions would be appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Preventing political signs from being stolen. Posted: 05 Oct 2020 06:09 PM PDT Hello! I live in an area where I have the opposite political view as most of the people in my community. Recently we had someone steal our presidential candidate sign. We have a Ring door bell that caught the person but he was too far away to get any identifiable features. I have Arlo cameras up as well but where I have to put the sign, it is difficult to get a good angle from the cameras. I've currently put a security camera in my car just so that we have a better angle but I know the sign is more likely to get stolen when I'm not home. We have not been the only victim of sign theft in the neighborhood so I won't be surprised if it happens again. Is there a simple way to hide my cameras in my mailbox but make sure it is secure so it won't get stolen to? Or any other ideas to try to deter and prevent another sign theft? Thanks for any help in advance! [link] [comments] |
Are all HD-CVI cameras using the same cable standard? Posted: 05 Oct 2020 08:39 PM PDT I've read conflicting information on this, and I've had sales reps tell contradicting information too. I'm looking to upgrade to 4k cameras & DVR, but I have a system that is a 1080p HD-CVI. Do I need to re-run new lines or can just drop in place? [link] [comments] |
What Burglars are Looking for and How to Keep them from Getting It. Posted: 05 Oct 2020 04:09 AM PDT If you keep some of your most valuable possessions in a safe that is not mounted to the floor or too large to carry out, (something the size of an ATM machine) then it should be nothing more than a decoy with a few mildly valuable items. Any burglar would easily just pick up the safe and leave not thinking to look for anything else as they want to be in and out within 5 to 10 minutes due to average police response times. . Naturally if you take the time to hide all of your items particularly heirlooms in locations that would be the last place for someone to look then the only way they're getting stolen is if somebody else was told where they're located. . If you have a standard box for your jewelry keep any pieces you don't wear frequently hidden well. If you live in an affluent community and only have costume jewelry in your jewelry box a thief will keep on looking so ideally put your least favorite pieces of Sterling Silver or Gold Fill/ Gold plated Jewelry in there. . If you take any controlled substances or drugs with any desirable psychoactive effect (everything from Gabapentin to Oxycodone) it is best to keep these hidden as well. . . Outdoor camera planning. Did I do it right? Posted: 05 Oct 2020 06:03 PM PDT Hello HomeSecurity redditors! I'm building a new house and this coming weekend is my opportunity to pull POE cable for my security cameras. I've been lurking here and was hoping to get some feedback on my layout. I have not purchased any cameras yet. Right now, I am simply laying the foundational wiring. This link shows the overhead perimeter of the home. In my design, the blue markers willl be turret cameras at 8-9 foot height. The red markers will be bullet cameras near the soffet. The yellow marker will be a wide angle camera at 8-9 foot height. The green marker will be a doorbell camera. My question to the community is whether or not my layout makes sense and if there are significant gaps in my coverage? I can pull all the cable I want now. I have 2000 feet of bare copper cat6. I am installing small IP65 ABS enclosures that will hold the wiring until I install the cameras. I have not decided on specific cameras quite yet. All I can say right now is that they will be ONVIF cameras like Hikvision, Dahua, Amcrest or similar. I am planning on a BlueIris or Milestone or even a Linux NVR solution like ZoneMinder, but that's another post for another day. Bonus question: Are there lighting solutions (IR or otherwise) that I can power over POE which would be advantageous to wire for in advance? edit: the bump out on the left side of the image is a fireplace that only goes up about 7 feet. The camera over it is not obstructed. There are no buildings behind the house. There is a bike path back a little over a hundred feet or so with a treeline behind that. [link] [comments] |

A camera with siren that I can also turn off when home? Posted: 05 Oct 2020 04:05 PM PDT Hi there, My gf and I are moving to a new condo which is located on the main floor. It's a 2 bedroom apartment with a patio and each room has glass doors. We live in Canada. I am looking for a system that allows to: The areas I want to cover are the living room and the patio. I would like a wireless battery powered camera for the outdoor. The Argus 2 or the Ring battery Powered look like good fits. Now I'd like another device in the living room. Something that could activate a siren if it detects an intruder (for when my gf and I don't have access to our phone, like being out of the country). Another IP camera might do the trick though I have some concerns: Another possibility is to have a motion sensor in the living room. But it seems to be part of the whole "alarm security system" which is expensive and probably too much for my need. All I want is a single motion sensor that I could link to my Google Home for instance. Honestly the market is a big jungle to me and it's quite hard to see what each camera can and can't do. Any help would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
No power to Smokes after Panel upgrade and detector replacement Posted: 05 Oct 2020 09:32 AM PDT I could use some help troubleshooting a problem I have with my smoke and heat detectors. I replaced our original DSC Power832 system, ultimately with a new PC1864 and new smoke/heats all around the house. I also added an ADC-210 communicator as we dropped our POT line. I did two rounds of replacement/upgrades over the last 2 weeks because I ordered some of the wrong smoke/heats and also realized I needed more zones than the 1832 could accommodate. Once done, I realized the LEDs on all of the smokes were dark. I would appreciate any advice on steps I should take to troubleshoot the LED issue (lack of power?) with the smoke/heat. Below is the sequence I followed and the observations: Original Setup - all fire/heats were operational - PC5020 Panel - (6) 4WTA-B Smoke (System Sensor – 4wire) - (4) 4W-B Smoke - (3) W18-Y04F Heat (Chemetronic-Single Circuit) - (2) W21-Y04F Heat - (1) W17-Y04F Heat - All Smoke/Heat hard wired in series back to box. Replaced (Round #1): - Panel with PC1832 - All (6) 4WTA-Bs with same model - All (2) W21-Y04F with System Sensor 5601P - Retained original (4) 4W-B Smoke, (3) W18-Y04F Heat (1) W17-Y04F Heat (I ordered the wrong parts) - Installed (new component) ADC-210 communicator. Wiring – Smoke/Heat: - Duplicated legacy PC5020 wiring - RED=AUX+; BLACK=PGM1; YELLOW=Z1; GREEN=COM - RED=BELL+; BLACK=BELL-; RESISTOR=BELL+/BELL- - YELLOW=EOL RESISTOR=GREEN Programming (specific to Fire/Heat): - [013] 1-----7- - [001] 08 Observations after replacements: - Smoke LED mode – All Normal (green blinking every 5 sec) - Pressing the Test Switch activated the siren for each of the 6 new 4WTA-Bs. - "Fire Alarm Bells Silenced" message appeared on all 3 keypads. This message was not present on legacy PC5020 system. - Alarm.com ADC-210. Zone 1 Status: "Device State Unknown Replaced (Round #2): - PC1832 with PC1864 (needed more zones than I thought) - Added 4th PC5108 Zone Expander - All (4) 4W-Bs with same model - All (3) W18-Y04F with System Sensor 5604 - All (1) W17-Y04F with System Sensor 5602 Wiring – Smoke/Heat: - Duplicated legacy PC5020 & PC1832 wiring - RED=AUX+; BLACK=PGM1; YELLOW=Z1; GREEN=COM - RED=BELL+; BLACK=BELL-; RESISTOR=BELL+/BELL- - YELLOW=EOL RESISTOR=GREEN Observations after Round #2 replacements: - Forgot to check to if LEDs on any of the smokes were blinking. - Forgot to run Test Switch on any of the new 4W-Bs. - "Fire Alarm Bells Silenced" message again appeared on all 3 keypads. - Alarm.com ADC-210. Zone 1 Status: "Device State Unknown Programming (specific to Fire/Heat): - [013] 1-----7- - [001] 08 Additional Programming per Tyco/DSC Technical Advisory "PowerSeries V4.62 "Fire Alarm Bells Silenced" Message (April 28, 2020): - [101] ------7- Observations after Additional Programming: - Fire Alarm Bells Silenced" Message was gone. - Alarm.com ADC-210. Zone 1 Status: "Device State Unknown - Checked for first time since Round #2 replacements, that the LEDs on all of the Smokes were dark. Thanks in advance for any help. I appreciate this community. EDIT: In response to comments about smoke/heat wired in series, here is some additional information.
Hopefully, this gives you a clearer idea of the situation. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Log cellphone activity using WiFi Posted: 05 Oct 2020 12:48 PM PDT Hi! Is there any way to log cellphone WiFi activity via nearby access points? As my house is positioned where noone except people on the premises would be able to connect to the WiFi it would prove an ideal solution to track e.g. recurring visitors at the odd hour. My network (and surveillance) solution is entirely based on UniFi-products (AP, switches, gateway, cameras) and there is a home server available should any third party-programs be required. Recommendation for energy-efficient cameras with Passive Infrared Sensors (pir)? Posted: 05 Oct 2020 05:19 AM PDT I am looking for a new surveillance camera for my entryway/garage/parking area. The camera I currently have is older and appears to use need to send a video stream to my surveillance software which does motion detection by picture analysis. This results in a lot of videos caused by leaves/wind rustling or the like, and presumably this uses a fair amount of unnecessary power as the camera is always recording. Wildlife cameras on the other hand often appear to have Passive Infrared Sensors embedded, and hence only take pictures when the PIR detects motion. This solution is likely far more power efficient, wildlife cameras have a standby time of months on just a few AA-batteries. Wildlife cameras are perhaps not suitable for home surveillance as the once I have looked at cannot be charged from the mains. Can anyone recommend a home-surveillance camera that has -ethernet connectivity -PIR-sensor-based motion detection -night vision ? Any help much appreciated. [link] [comments] |

New house with existing alarm system needing phone line Posted: 05 Oct 2020 05:36 AM PDT Moved into a new house last week which has a NAPCO GEM-P816 system in it. The old owners gave us the code and no other info. They said they never really used it. Anyway yesterday the thing starts beeping for no reason. Best I can tell is it's beeping because the land line has been disconnected and it needs that for whatever reason. We don't plan on having a land line so ended up just pulling the power out cause it was beeping every few hours. Anyone know how I can tell this thing to not care about having a land line? Online instructions don't seem to have much info about this. I'm going to a professional out to take a look but would like to have the alarm functional until that happens. Cheers [link] [comments] |
