Cameras with a decent mobile app? Tried Nest, Wyze, Dahua , Blink, Ring, etc

Hey all, as the title says looking for a camera system that actually has a good usable app. The ones I've tried there's.always something they miss out,

Nest is the easiest to use with the fast scrubbing of playback, but then you can pause or do slow motion.

Wyze is unrealiable (servers) and quite slow.

Duhau is best quality As it's wired but app is slow and clunky to use, impossible to find motion detections as it's so slow but does at least connect to NAS..

Is there anything that is like a combination of the best best bits of Nest, Wyze and Dahua.

    thanks

Help me get the most out of my new system

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:09 PM PDT

We had some neighborhood hankey pankey and ive upgraded my analog dvr system to an amcrest4k nvr, ive got coverage that im satisfied with (10 cameras) We are not in a busy area but do have regular waves of people checking car doors and entering open garages. We park outside.

Once i have good coverage of the vehicles and doors/windows, what are things i should or shouldnt do with this system to get the most? Motion alerts? Motion zones? Other ideas? I still mostly want it as a black box and the obvious deterrent value of visible cameras. I dont want to be notified of every critter or every mail delivery.

What cool and useful things can i do with this?

Man sleeping in my garage scared the crap out of me! What system(s) should I use?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 06:38 AM PDT

Went to leave for work this morning and found a man curled up in a tarp between our cars. Police came and he said the side door was open (There's three gates he had to get through, we're they all open?). He left peacefully but clearly I need a security solution.

Some background: I've been in this house for a month. It is in an area with a major homelessness problem that has gotten even worse since we moved in. (City clears one area, the people move to another, typical leaf blower solutions that don't solve anything). It's a house with an attached garage.

The previous owner left cameras installed, but I haven't been able to connect. There's also some motion sensors and door sensors that I also haven't been able to connect to. From what I can tell he pulled whatever controllers he had and left what was too hard to get to. I would love to use the equipment left behind, but the previous owner has not responded or provided any information.

The house has Z-Wave devices all over (Lutron and GE light switches, Schlage door locks, line garage door opener attached to a chamberlain with MyQ), I need a hub.

    What I'm looking for:

    1. Monitored system for door/window sensors. Enough that if someone breaks in the police get called even if I'm not watching my phone. One that has a private security team would be nice since LAPD has a terrible response time (took 20 minutes for them to send a car while someone was actually in my house!)

    2. Video surveillance system on a NAS/NVR/DVR that I can access but isn't being watched by a hacker or a call center.

    3. Smart home automation that ensures doors are locked and closed when I leave and go to bed and can alert me when the garage door opens or a door is left unlocked.

    What I'm considering:

    1. Simplisafe/ADP/abode for a monitored system. Is it worth trying to reuse the sensors? Are there others to consider? Ring is too Amazon for me.
    2. For video I tried a Eufy doorbell camera, it was junk. Looking at a) lorex system from costco b) another NVR solution c) NAS where I can also back up photos and stream music to my WiFi audio system (Arylic).
    3. Abode has the advantage of also being a Z-Wave hub. That's nice since Wink now charges and Smart Things is losing support. Otherwise looking into a raspberry pi solution, which could potentially play into the camera solution as well.

Would love some recommendations and links to well documented projects. Even after a lot of research I feel like I'm not sure where to start, and I really can't wait. Next time the intruder many not be so willing to leave, or he may leave with more than my tarp.

Exactly how easy is it to hack a baby monitor?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 05:05 AM PDT

My ex seems to know things and be privy to conversations that he shouldn't.

I have a Motorola Halo+ baby monitor, and another cheap one off of Amazon (the ad says CACAGOO A4?) that we suspect he's hacked.

But how easy is that? Don't you need to know which app to use? He doesn't even know the models. I told him that my Halo+ didn't connect to phones, and he didn't even know the other one existed until last night.

Or is this something that his friend with a Masters in comp sci could've figured out no problem?

What are your thoughts on the HoopCam Plus Home Security System?

As the title implies, what are your thoughts on this system?

Review my build. Synology Surveillance System (or BI) NVR Build Plan

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 10:27 AM PDT

I'm finalizing my build and order list for my home network and surveillance system. I'd greatly appreciate a once over before I click buy and make sure nothing is missing or recs for parts to swap. This is my first time doing this and have researched as best as possible prior to posting.

My plan atm is to run the system off Synology Surveillance System. Tested it already and very straight forward. Considering Blue Iris for more advanced person detection, but need to test still. I've gathered equipment that would let me go either direction, but leaning towards Syn for ease of use. I need 8 cameras on my property, but MIGHT opt to add 1-2 more later or depending on coverage as we install.

    1. Amcrest 4k 8MP 2.8mm Turret Camera x8. (I'm considering getting a couple 4mm's to have on hand in case they are better in certain locations). I've heard the Domes won't do well in my area due to some dust and sand in the area, and fog up during winter and snow.

    2. Picking up a 2nd Synology NAS to dedicate as an NVR (not sure if there is a minimum CPU power or something for this usage. I currently have a DS920+ as my Plex server). Might pick up another one of those? If a 2 slot is more cost effective with drives, fine with that route. Trying to stay $ lean.

    3. PoE Switch. Ideally one with 16 PoE ports. While starting with 8 cameras, we could quickly expand to 9-10, don't see going beyond, but I'd rather have some options and be set. Not sure which switch to get yet. I do want to have the cameras not taking up the bandwidth of the network, and I think that's done by plugging the switch directly into the NAS, and then having the NAS plugged into the network. Is that right? These cameras seem to take 6w each, so I'll make sure there is enough power on the switch.

    4. UPS for the NAS.

    5. WD Purple Drives for NAS. Storage amount TBD. I can calculate this with Syn's calculator.

    6. Server rack to house the PoE switch and to put my 2 NAS devices and 2 USPs on. Any recs on size or types? Not looking to spend much here. I've got a dedicated mechanical room for this so not too worried about aesthetics. Mech room is unfinished, so I prefer a standing rack vs mounting something to the wall atm, as we may finish it later.

    7. Cables (provided by tech doing install in house).

    8. A friend of mine was mentioning something about patch panels to make the install cleaner? Keeping the camera network and home network tidier for the installer?

    9. Is there anything I'm missing or overlooking?
