Home security: Option for capturing crazy neighbor

Home security: Option for capturing crazy neighbor

    Option for capturing crazy neighbor

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 02:49 PM PDT

So we have a crazy racist neighbor who is harassing us. We are pretty sure it's because we have a BLM sign in our yard, but also our kids play in the street with their neighbor friends. But mostly he's just a crazy guy.

He has driven past our house at very high speeds multiple times and almost hit our 5 year old once. He came to our door once when we were out of town, yelled "Black lives don't matter" at my husband once, and now lays on his horn and puts his middle finger up every time he passes our house. In front of our kids.

We feel completely harassed and have reported him but we have no evidence or any of it.

Can anyone recommend a camera to catch his speeding and obscene gestures/yelling?

The street is about 60 feet from our front door, but we are fine putting a camera on our yard or on a tree or something.

Wed rather not spend more than a few hundred bucks. Thank you!

Would yard signs really deter burglars away?

Just curious, did you experience a break in despite having a security alarm yard sign and/or window decals?

    Help configuring DMSS for Dahua

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 06:25 PM PDT

Got a Dahua NVR set up on a VLAN (router and switch both VLAN-enabled)

I can see my cams no problem in DMSS when on local LAN (which is not blocked from accessing VLAN), but as soon as I try remote (LTE) the connection times out/fails.

Up until today DMSS was working fine. Then I noticed that I had configured my VLAN WRONG in the switch to which the NVR is connected; so I fixed that. Since then, then cams are only working in the LAN. I put the Switch port back to the mistaken IP and everything works....

    The VLAN is configured thus:

PFSENSE VLAN interface (configured with IP XXX.XXX.20.1)

CISCO SWITCH: IP for port on which NVR is attached WAS configured XXX.XXX.2.1 (WORKED) and now it has been fixed to XXX.XXX.20.1 same as on PFSENSE VLAN DHCP (NOT WORKING)

NVR: set to XXX.XXX.20.108 (both before and now).

DMSS: configured with the above NVR IP address (both before and now).

Port on which NVR is attached is an ACCESS port UNTAGGED

    LAN is on XXX.XXX.1.0

Again, either switch VLAN setting works with when I access the cams on the local lan or on DMSS via wifi in the LAN.

So I am totally confused why this would work in the first place with the wrong IP in the Cisco managed switch but NOT with the correct IP!

    Any ideas?

    Security Camera Suggestion for Newbie

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 06:05 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

Looking to install 2 to 3 outdoor security cameras but having a difficult time deciding which one to choose. Google Nest seems to be highly rated but unfortunately, the closest outlet to my garage is over 25 feet so now looking into wireless cameras. The popular wireless cameras are Ring and Arlo but I read very mixed reviews saying to stay away from them. I am willing to spend up to $600 for good and reliable cameras. Please which cameras do you recommend?

Edit: Please what is the difference between PoE cameras and other cameras like Ring?

    Video editor

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 05:29 PM PDT

Is there a video editor for the PC that will allow me to take video from my security NVR and edit it (.MP3 or .AVI)? I just need simple features like zoom, clip and crop. Thanks

    Alternative to EseeCloud

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 03:28 PM PDT

I have a cheap chinese Heimvision DVR security cam system which uses the EseeCloud application on Windows, or IP Cam on Android. I'm looking for a better windows client to access the feeds from each camera. There is a flash based web server player integrated to the box, but it has a significant delay. I've noticed there's no delay on the Android IP Cam app connected through the cloud. EseeCloud on Windows has lag though, and doesn't work all that great.

Any good alternatives any of you could suggest? Thanks!

What 4g detection options are available?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 06:27 AM PDT

Is there any commercially made detection hardware that uses 4g? I don't want to limit it to 4g cameras like Reolink but essentially my use case is being able to set up something inconspicuous and small in different places which sends an alert if it detects motion from where it's at

A specific scenario I would use it is in my car internally that would send me a (loud!) alert if it detects motion within it as my car has been broken into before. This is the reason for being inconspicuous (if possible) and why I didn't want to limit it to a camera, sure it would be nice to have an image of someone who is not meant to be there but the main reason is to be able to know whether someone is in there in the first place - if there is no option like that then I will settle for a camera but I would think the other option would be significantly cheaper than a Reolink.

    Thanks

Explanation of how video management software like Blue Iris and UniFi Protect works?

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 06:00 AM PDT

I've only just sarted looking into this stuff and one of my requirements is to be able to view this stuff remotely and have motion detector alerts.

After reading on it and watching some videos, am I right that the essence of these is to have a piece of software manage various cameras in a single location?

Is the benefit about Blue Iris that you can have multiple cameras all from different brands managed in one place? And this works out because say if Hikvision/Arlo/Ubiquiti went out of business you wouldn't be able to use their cloud to remotely monitor your camera but Blue Iris could leverage the same internal camera software to do this locally with your computer hosting -> phone app to view? so it doesn't need to use the cloud for my use case?

That would be great though, because what I'm looking for is to not be locked into a certain device manufacturer's ecosystem. And not being reliant on their cloud services and instead bypassing it to just go straight from local net hosted to stream over an app. Is this what it's doing and the incentive to use this software as a service? It would be $120 AUD which isn't small but as a one-time fee sounds pretty good.

As a side question - are all (most?) features to an IP camera (e.g. PTZ, IR) not reliant on the same software that was used to make it? As the example above, if a Hikvision camera has these features, it's not dependent on proprietary Hikvision software controlling it? It's an internal feature on the camera itself and so any software with access to it (e.g. Blue Iris) can control this software too?

Another note - I see people blocking IP camera access to the internet but if it were to be used by Blue Iris, does the computer set itself up as a host and access the IP camera locally then gets uploaded via. your own home net? So like IP camera->local internet->BlueIris->actual internet->your phone app?

    Thank you
