    Doormats flipped over

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 03:08 AM PDT

So I live in a first floor apartment in a relatively safe area but crime does happen around me. There have been weird events over the past two months around my place. 1) About two months ago after I came home from work I found my front doormat flipped with half of the doormat left flipped up. 2) I have a tomato plant and basil on the back porch which had about ten nice red and green tomatoes on there. About two weeks after the doormat incident I came home from work and they were all picked off. 3) about two weeks after the tomatoes were stolen I came home from work and the back door doormat was flipped with half the doormat left flipped up. 4) a few weeks later came home and there was an obituary from an old news paper next to the sidewalk walking up to my place. I did end up finding other pieces of the same paper scattered around the complex so that may have been the wind/coincidence.

I put up some cameras in the front and back about a week ago. It caught one girl I have never seen before make a pass along the front porch of my neighbors but she didn't mess with the door or mats at all. While I was home I have seen random people walk along the grass near my back patio. The cameras have caught a big cat, skunks and opossums walking around the front and back patio but not messing with the mats.

What do you guys think? Someone messing with me or something? People scoping the place out?

Looking for a hidden door lock

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 01:05 PM PDT

I'd like to lock one of my closets, but I don't want it to be obvious the door is locked because something like a deadbolt on a closet is really suspicious and maybe even creepy. The door is an ordinary hollow composite interior door with a standard doorknob.

    • The lock doesn't need to be like a bank vault, I'm not securing bars of gold here

    • I'm looking for something at least halfway affordable, some solutions I'm seeing online are as much as $1000, that's overkill for my purposes

    • It's okay if one would detect that the door is locked simply by trying to open it, if somebody tried the door they're definitely snooping

    • No need for hidden cameras or alarms, not trying to catch anybody in the act

Just - stay out of my stuff, ya know, but don't draw attention to the fact I have stuff I want people to stay out of.

Wifi cameras have a deauth vulnerability

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 03:04 PM PDT

I see a lot of posts about setting up wifi cameras for a security system. If its only for casual security, like watching the kids in the backyard, wifi cameras will work just fine. But, if you need high reliability or the camera is connected to another system like an alarm system or access control, wifi might not be the best solution.

I have just tried and tested several wifi cameras I replaced with PoE cameras and found all of them failed with attacked. The method is called the wifi deauther attack. Essentially, you send a signal to the camera that tells the wifi radio to reestablish the wifi link. If you do this many times a second, the camera will not be able to send the video stream to the NVR or your endpoint. You can buy these wifi deauther devices on eBay for less than $30.

Identity got stolen days after signing up for Vivinit security. Coincidence or should I be suspicious?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 07:27 AM PDT

I'm posting on behalf of my mother. I am on mobile so I do apologize in advance for formatting and spelling issues. She just got the whole giving Vivinit security system setup. She's got the doorbell camera, smoke alarm, backyard camera, and the control panel. The whole shebang. Well she also has Lifelock for a year included with her contract. No less than 2 days after swiping her card with the security sales reps, her bank account is showing large numbers of money getting taken out for all kinds of things. The fraud department also claims that the person who stole her information used ApplePay. To my knowledge, you're only able to use applepay if you call and confirm personal information with the bank about whichever card you're planning to use for it. This leads both my mother and I to be suspicious that her entire identity got compromised, not just her money. The fraud department says they potentially skimmed her card at a gas station, I say this is unlikely because she hasn't been to the station in several days, and definitely more than just her have used the pumps. Most of the time they skim and then try to use it pretty much instantly.

We're worried that because she didn't do her research on the security company and their several issues with fraud and scam in the past that maybe the company sold her information so they can force her to utilize the LifeLock system somehow. Are there any other instances of this happening with Vivinit customers? Do we need to take action against them? We're confused and a little scared at the moment. Now that they've got us hard wired, if they did sell/steal our information what else could they do with our home in their hands?

How should I monitor the front of my house?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 03:47 PM PDT

I got the blink xt2 but it doesn't record 24/7 and only records when they'll motion. Maybe idk how to use it but there's a lot of people and traffic that passes by so it records it and when I gray those part out, it can't record when people enters my gate and it's maybe only 50 feet from where my camera is. It only records if you are close by like 10 feet. But when cars passes by, it can record that so I'm confused.

But what should I do. I don't want false alarms but still want to monitor my front entrance through my gate

Looking for a security system/company for new house. Don't know where to begin?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 08:44 AM PDT

Next week, I'll officially be a first-time homeowner and am struggling to determine what security system/company to go with. I'd like to use a monitored system (I understand that this tends to be more costly). However, after reading through a bunch of posts, I've received so much mixed feedback (people either hate them or love them) regarding the following companies: Vivent, ADT, Front Point, and Protect America. I'm not familiar with security systems and I'm really not sure where to go from here. Any recommendations or advice?

Affordable wireless front door camera that works?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 07:19 AM PDT

The title sort of says it all. We're looking for a camera for our front door. We need motion detection that works without a ton of lag, and we'd like two way communication and for it to be wireless, if possible. I'd prefer not a doorbell. It will be mounted on a large covered porch, so aside from heat and cold the weather shouldn't be an issue. Budget would be up to around $100, but could be stretched a teensy bit if needed.

As a completely uninformed individual, ring seems like the obvious choice, because marketing, but I'm sure there are other things out there that would work for us.

    Recommendations or suggestions?

    Thank you for your help!

Just bought a house, deciding between xfinity home vs. Nest/Yale

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 06:40 AM PDT

Hello, I just bought a house that already has a security system that had no name on it, I'm not sure what the sellers used for service but I googled the device and it's a 2gig GC2, there's also a nest thermostat for the first floor. Now I heard bad things about xfinity home but they do offer a neat package with internet and cable that's making me consider it. I would like to have a strong smart lock and it seems both xfinity and Nest systems would offer it.
I'm kind of lost and new to this, would really appreciate your help.

Bought a house with ADT - Help?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 05:59 AM PDT

So I bought a house that has ADT installed. (Canada), however I'm not interested in signing up for the service. I don't mind using the system if I could figure out how. However the main problem is that it is constantly chirping/beeping (From the Keypad terminal) with the only way of disabling it is to turn off my doorbell breaker.

Upon looking at it, I clicked onto the "Trouble" part of it, and it says that it has something to do with the codes, 1, 3, and 8. Which based on the panel mean "Service Required, Telephone Line Trouble, and Loss of Clock"

I'm wondering, can I stop it from beeping on my own? Disabling it via the breaker gets rid of our doorbell, which kind of sucks.

    Thanks.

How to use an alarm.com camera as an NVR wireless cam?

    Posted: 10 Sep 2020 07:47 PM PDT

    I have 2 ADC-V722W cameras but I don't want to use them with alarm.com.

I have 4 other IP cameras which automatically connect to my NVR box. How can I modify these cams to run on the NVR box without using alarm.com service? Thanks in advance.
