Neighbors were burglarized and I can't figure out if I lost an envelope of cash in home or if someone broke in

Greetings. So normally I would read and research a lot before posting, however I feel like I need to get started as quickly as possible securing this house. As I said, the next-door neighbors (shared fence, houses close) were burglarized. This happened in the end of May but we only found out this week. They were home constantly and then went out to dinner and it happened then. They said cars were hanging around and watching their house and I've noticed the same thing, at times. They had a security system with a camera but it didn't help to stop or identify anyone. The burglars smashed a small window in the back of the house and got in and out quickly.

Our house is a (corner) house with a cottage/studio in the backyard. Two days ago, on Thursday, the key to the cottage suddenly did not seem to fit or work at all. A friend who can fix everything came to take a look at it. The key had worked 100% smoothly up until then. At first he thought I had given him the wrong key, but after fiddling around he got the lock to work again and said that something had slipped/broken inside, and from now on to only use the deadbolt. I asked if he thinks somebody might have gotten in and he said no, it just happened spontaneously and it's a useless cheap lock.

I quickly looked around and saw that nothing seemed missing (little CD player, containers of old electronic things, old cell phones, couple unopened packages of printer ink, etc.). Otherwise not much a burglar would be interested in, kind of a mess of hundreds of papers and folders and books and things like that. For some reason, it did not even cross my mind to look for an envelope of cash (not an insignificant amount) until early yesterday morning (Friday). I had been meaning to deposit it for months but kept delaying because the bank is closed every time I go, because of everything. So finally I decided to just deposit it though the ATM. Well I couldn't find the money yesterday, even though I looked for it all day. Earlier this week it was there for sure. The envelope was labeled with the amount of money that was inside.

I have moved this envelope around numerous times in the last few weeks but usually it has been either right on top of the front desk or in the front desk drawer. A while back I kept it on some shelves. I did move some things around, kind of in a rush, after hearing about this burglary. The place is partially a mess and partially highly organized. But this envelope of cash has never taken me more than two minutes to find. I started to worry that maybe somebody really did break in. It's hard for me to believe, but where is it?

I just feel in such a rush to get some kind of security as soon as possible. I actually did call ADT a few months ago but they bullied me on the phone and refused to send me anything in writing about what they were even offering. And anyhow, the neighbors as I said, had a security system with cameras and this didn't protect them.

We are going to get bars on some of the vulnerable windows, however this will take time, and also I am going to get an outer metal security door for the cottage - but this will take a few days at least as well.

I don't know. I guess I just wanted to introduce myself and this situation because I've known I need to get some kind of a defense system for a long time, but I really don't know anything about how to go about this. I'm very glad to have found this forum. We have kept everything well-lit at night, but that's about it.

I'm wondering if I should get some kind of temporary security system *while* deciding on whatever security system we *really* need. Maybe something quick and easy, just for the really weak areas that can't be dealt with easily.

Last thing I'm hesitating to even mention. Yesterday I religiously kept locking the deadbolt, all day long, as I went back and forth from the house to the cottage looking for this envelope. This morning the deadbolt was unlocked. Am I losing my mind? After all that vigilance yesterday, apparently I somehow forgot to lock the deadbolt overnight (or lock the cottage door at all) because nothing, again, is missing. This sort of gives me hope that the envelope of cash is still floating around somewhere, too. On the other hand, I can't believe I did that. And what about the lock that suddenly wouldn't function. Is my friend right, that this just happens spontaneously with some locks? Thanks to anyone who read all this.

Home Defense... what am I missing?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 09:21 AM PDT

Hello, I am a single mid 30's female living alone in a 3 level townhouse. I have always been extra cautious with securing my home. Looking for any advice on anything I may have missed... 1. Alarm system installed since the day I moved in. 2. Door sensors with chimes at each point of entry. 3. Cameras installed in important areas (lower level aimed to see front door and entire room, 2 on middle level aimed to see anyone that comes up the stairs and also view entire middle level). No cameras on third level where bedrooms are located. 4. My dog (isnt really a guard dog imo, 15 month old pit/golden retriever mix). 5. Double and triple check all windows weekly. 6. Most important- 9mm bedside handgun with olight installed. Will be getting more firearms in the near future. 7. Lights inside the home on every level that active at a certain time each day whether I'm home or not. 8. Doorbell camera with motion detection.

Am I missing anything that could be especially beneficial to my home security/defense?

Looking for power efficient NVR setup recommendations.

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 02:38 PM PDT

I've experimented with an older Intel Nuc + blue iris and the consumption was ~20w, not including a poe switch + cameras. My current re-branded Dahua NVR is 27w-35w for everything including 3 cameras.

I'm drawn the efficiency of the single purpose systems, and can really eek out time on a UPS. Compactness of the system is also nice. One downside is the feature set on these cheap NVRs.

It'd certainly be cool if there was an open source hardware nvr people could piece together. But even looking for motherboards with multiple Ethernet poe ports seems non existent.

Is it possible to use 3mp cameras on a 2mp DVR

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 11:52 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have some Night Owl 3MP cameras (CM-PTHD30W-BU) but my current system is a Hikvision 2MP DVR (DS-7332HGHI-SH)

I was thinking that if I were to plug in the Night owl cameras on a compatible DVR, maybe I could decrease the recording resolution in the PTZ settings and it could work on my system?

Before I start this sisyphean task, has anyone been in a similar situation?

Real-world video quality comparison for 4k HDR 24FPS+ IP PoE h.265 IR cameras?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 09:50 AM PDT

Due to a rash of local burglaries and suspicious drive-bys I've captured on my small, dead-end street, I'm in the process of replacing my entire home surveillance system with 4k HDR 24FPS+ IP PoE cameras with infrared and encoding over h.265. Zoom, pan, and tilt are not required.

I had a prowler a few nights ago but bad cameras and poor decisions by the vendor have led me to fire the security company and spec a new system properly, myself. From what I can tell from the video, the prowler was scoping the property for a future burglary rather than attempting the burglary that night. This area has a problem with professional thieves. There's little chance of a smash-and-grab meth-head getting through the security glass or and no chance of breaking in a door. Outside locks are Abloy Protec2, so bump keys won't work here. I want to capture the prowler when he returns so law enforcement can make an identification of what is probably an uncaught professional thief.

However, buying off spec alone is not a reflection of video quality. Each camera has different sensors delivering different levels of sharpness, detail, and range. Furthermore, differences in how well cameras implement h.265 encoding and their choice of bitrate impact the quality of the recorded stream.

Has anyone been able to find raw output video from some of the better, real 4k cameras on the market, or vendors willing to supply it on request? I'd like to see what I'm getting before I buy because there are so many crappy cameras with bad sensors and worse encoders which still check the boxes of the spec.

Unfortunately, I'm having trouble finding objective data. Endless searching has only turned up vendors touting their own cameras under ideal conditions or spam "review" blogs providing affiliate links, meaningless star ratings, and spec listings but no objective comparison of video quality.

I've been searching vendor to vendor but none seem to provide actual output footage giving me a real-world look at what will be received by my NVR. This makes it impossible to tell a good camera from a mediocre camera or from the cheap, fake 4k cameras which have flooded the market. The best I can find is a combination of staged, still images (which says nothing about real-world quality), YouTube product demos (highly compressed and encoded in 1080p, no less), and a bunch of fake reviews which are little more than spec listings with Amazon affiliate links.

I'm looking for the best video quality and detail in both daytime and night settings, within reason. There is a point of diminishing returns, but I'm willing to pay good money for quality gear.

I haven't decided whether I'll be using an open source NVR or would be okay with a proprietary model, so I'm open to all cameras at this point. I'd be fine with a proprietary NVR so long as it meets requirements. For archiving, internal is fine as long as it can store enough video on redundant drives, or if storage space is too limited, gives me the option to push/pull recorded video via standard protocols to a multi-petabyte network store which can handle however much data is thrown at it. Also, the NVR needs to allow remote access, but not require a phone app, and not via cloud integration. Few other requirements, but I'd like to spec the cameras first and build from there.

I also haven't decided whether I'll end up mixing and matching cameras to fit various roles. That depends on quality at the needed spec

I need the sharpness and detail because of the size of the property and need to resolve faces through digital zoom. Several cameras also need to capture readable license plates.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to objectively compare cameras which meet the spec?

[Q] Help Me Replace This Enormous LYNX Alarm Pad

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 09:18 AM PDT

    Hi Guys!

First time poster and I thank you in advance for your guidance.

Moving into a home that was build in 2006 and it's got a beast of a LYNX key pad. I've never seen anything that large!

I'm looking to replace the pad and also install a Konnected tie-in, so that I can use the existing system, both from the pad as well as from the phone, and pick up monitoring services.

What pad would you recommend I upgrade to? Anything smaller is a win 😁

RLC-410 can't login on Reolink app.

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 05:17 AM PDT

    Good morning.

Just bought both camera and switch to run few tests before committing to better setups.

When I open the Reolink app (v7.2.2.33) on the "Devices List" it says: "Camera #1: login failed" (or timeout). But this happens whether the RLC-410 camera is connected directly through the Ethernet port, or through the tp-link PoE switch, or even when nothing is connected at all.

The only difference is that when the camera is connected through the switch the Reolink app finds the camera with an automated scan, but still can't login.

How would you go from here, what basic stuff am I missing? Firewall is closed, laptop is old-ish with Windows 8.1.

    Thank you.

Edit: So I temporarily solved from the prompt by changing the laptop's IP address with

netsh interface ipv4 set address name="Ethernet" static (here I put the new ip)

The point is that every time I close the Reolink app or turn off the camera I have to do it all over again. Any workaround?

Z-wave plus door and window sensors?

    Posted: 25 Jul 2020 01:48 AM PDT

Wife woke me up for the 10th time in the last 3 months thinking she heard someone enter the house. After sweeping the house with my burglar-shredder I'm now laying here looking up smart home alarm systems.

I don't want a monitored system, instead, I want to custom build a smart system based on zwave plus and some other components.

We have a dog and ceiling fans otherwise I would love to just get a few motion sensors.

I'm looking for some door and window sensors but most of what I'm seeing is the $20-30 each price range. Is this what I should be expecting to pay?

    What do you all recommend.

If my alarm goes off as I am leaving and I call the company saying it is a false alarm, will the system still be armed or will they disarm it?
