Looking for a loud motion sensor alarm for apartment (Canada)

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 02:41 PM PDT

Hello. As there has been an increase in break-ins where I live, I wanted to install a motion sensor by my front door that will trigger a very loud alarm. I would prefer something I could get locally or something on Amazon.ca that I could get delivered within a week. I have looked into the magnetic door alarms, however I feel like those wouldn't be loud enough and would be easy to disarm. I would prefer a system where I could install a motion sensor and put the alarm in a different location out of plain sight. I would like to keep this purchase under $100 if possible. I think I would prefer something to the tune of 100-120 dB (or even louder if possible). Thanks!

How in the world to get out of a contract with ADT without spending over a thousand dollars?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 05:43 PM PDT

So, right around the time Covid hit, my wife and I decided to look into getting a security system for our home. After some checking around, I decided it'd probably be best to go through a company rather than a DIY option (laziness mainly, figured I'd rather have someone else install it than try to myself and have it fail). Called ADT, and after awhile on the phone, found out I'd have to install it myself but it'd be a one stop shop (Plus, it was supposed to work with Alexa!). We sign on the dotted line, and excitedly await our new security system.

It comes in, we install it- and the camera doorbell seems finicky. We fight with it for a couple of weeks, and it finally just fails completely. We also run into connectivity issues with our cameras- one doesn't seem to want to connect with our Alexa (It's always 'Hmm.. 'camera name' isn't responding.') , and the other doesn't even power on. We called about a month ago, originally, regarding the doorbell and they said they'd send out a replacement, which we've yet to receive.

Today, we called to cancel (with 66% of the video related surveillance either not working or not integrating correctly with the rest of our smart home system, we've replaced most of them with cameras that feed to our private home server), and were told that since we're out of our 30 day window we'd need to pay $1200+ to get out of the contract. When I mentioned that I thought it was crap that I paid almost $600 to get a bunch of equipment that didn't work just to be told that in order to stop paying for a service that we're unable to use, I have to pay an additional $1200- At that rate, I'd almost be better off getting robbed. At least insurance covers that. They then said they'd replace the defective camera, as well as said they were sorry they didn't send out the first doorbell replacement but would make sure they did it this time. (We're at over a month without a doorbell at this point, mind you).

With everything that's gone on with ADT, I'm beyond done with them, but really don't want to drop that much money just to get rid of them. Is there any way to get out of this contract without the early cancellation fee?

    Privacy-respecting Outdoor floodlight cameras?

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 07:15 AM PDT

I want to upgrade my motion floodlight to one with a cam in it, but I will not allow a single bit of the data collected by it to go to law enforcement agencies (or anything but my private server, for that matter) without a warrant. Ring has some decent units available in my area (Canada), but I don't trust them with the data as far as I can toss it off my roof.

I'm a computer guy so I'm prepared to cobble something together myself, but I'd much prefer something off-the-shelf from a reputable company with a night vision camera, which is probably a tall order these days. If there's something that I can flash with ESPhome or something that like, so much the better, but I'm just getting into this area and everything I look at looks suspicious to me.

First time security camera shopper, a little overwhelmed and looking for best value for wireless outdoor cameras

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 05:31 PM PDT

I've never bought cameras before in my life and am looking for a wireless setup in terms of outdoor installation. I basically just need two cameras to watch my driveway/front door and one for the back door. My price range is 200-300. I would like to find something that can record around the clock and also give phone alerts. I've come to this sub because there are so many options out there it's a little overwhelming.

    DSC Home System troubleshooting

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 05:09 PM PDT

I have a home security DSC system (panel 5500-433 and wireless tr5164) that was a DIY install working perfectly until an RF Jam error message popped up a few months ago. I've tried disabling the RF Jam sensor through the panel (program section 804 subsection 90 option 7) but cannot get into the subsection—the system beeps out of any subsection I enter besides 01.

Anyone have suggestions on how to resolve this? I'm not sure what could be interfering with the system as no new radio devices were added to the house when the system stopped working.

    Thoughts on Frontpoint Security

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 05:11 AM PDT

I currently have a Vivint security system and can't begin to express what a pain the ass it's been. The monitors are constantly losing signal or needing the batteries to be replaced. The replacement ones I've gotten from Vivint have the same issues. However, I'm buying a new home and looking for a different system. I'll be stuck with Vivint at my old house (which we're renting out), but definitely dont want it at my new place. My husband was looking looking at a Frontpoint DIY install system with monthly monitoring.
I made the mistake of not looking on here before getting Vivint and I won't do that again. Thoughts on Frontpoint?

    Communal security issue

    Posted: 22 Jun 2020 10:41 AM PDT

So this is going to be lengthy but it's a tricky situation. The background is as follows. I live in a secluded area in a suburb in South Africa. The area is quite secure with various private security and private security systems, has two entrances one of which is permanently closed. Most of the houses have cameras and all have alarms. The area is also shaped like a circle so if you follow the road you come back around to the entrance which has a boom, cameras and a guard.

The problem is that for the past year a guy somehow manages to get into the area and tries to rob various houses. Mine of which was the first but we have ramped up security since.

He seems to be climbing over a wall of one of the houses. It happened again tonight however he didn't show up on our cameras at all meaning that he must have stayed on the south side of the circle between my house and the boom without passing either.

The question I suppose is are there any known cost effective methods for monitoring foot traffic on a road? I'm looking for wireless cameras that may be cloud based with alerts. Ones that have sufficient battery life and are outdoor approved. If someone could recommend a outdoor wireless camera that can be solar charged that would probably make the most sense. Any other ideas are welcome and I'll happily provide any information that is requested

New house prewired with GC2e hub w/ Alarm.com local provider - suggestions?

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 07:05 PM PDT

    Hi all,

As my title says my wife and I just bought a new place that we just found out comes prewired with a GC2e security/home automation hub, has sensors on all doors that go outdoors as well as two glass break sensors. I had planned on installing Simplisafe until I found out that this came preinstalled by the builder.

I am educating myself on the system now but I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of things to add, what brands are compatible/ are best and all. Also does the unit/app play well with either apple or google? I am planning on getting nest cameras, doorbell & thermostat and would love to integrate everything.

    Thanks!

    "Booby trap a mailbox"

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 10:38 PM PDT

My building has had multiple break-ins from thieves who stole packages and from mailboxes. We have a camera system that has images of the felons but they don't give a damn and the cops aren't interested.

Is there something that we could put in a mail box so when it is opened could trigger an alarm and send messages to people in the building? While I could probably figure out how to MacGyver something but I'd prefer something off the shelf that doesn't involve a $$$ alarm system. It's there something like that?

    Potential threat.

    Posted: 21 Jun 2020 09:15 PM PDT

Today my girlfriend and I both heard a loud crash from the basement of my house which is also the entryway for the front of the house. My immediate reaction was to grab my ar15 and pop in a magazine topped off with 28 (I've heard not to load 30 due to feeding issues with the amend2 magazines I have) .223 rounds and head downstairs to investigate. To preface, I haven't had any formal house clearing training or tactical training yet. I feel like I did the right thing after the gun was cleared and put away but I also had my pistol in my nightstand by the bed only later to find out I put the wrong magazine in it and it was empty. My question is, would it be beneficial to do sweeps from time to time within the house and get her involved or am I over thinking it? I just want my house and my loved ones safe without potentially doing the wrong thing and leaving us unprotected as a gun is essentially a brick when left unloaded like my aforementioned pistol was.
