Looking for a good option to protect a hallway storage unit in an apartment complex

    Posted: 01 May 2020 11:17 AM PDT

I rent a separate storage unit, basically closet, inside my apartment building. It's away from my unit a bit, next to the doors of some other units and close to the parking garage entrance. Large enough for car accessories / wheels, some shelves, and occasionally bikes.

There's a pervasive issue with theft from the units, and back in January, I had thousands of dollars of mountain bikes and parts stolen. Based on internet reviews for my building, there are about a dozen other instances of this happening.

I'm now keeping my bikes in my unit itself (thankfully renters insurance covered), but it's obviously not the most convenient. Any recommendations of a good way to try and secure this? I was thinking of adding a 1) remote magnetic door alarm and 2) chaining the bikes together and then to a heavy object like a kettle bell.

What I'm wondering is are there any better options or would that setup above be worth it? If someone was to break into the lock (standard Schlage deadbolt) again, would the inner locking setup be enough for deterrence? And even if I get alarmed, how should I respond other than maybe calling 911? I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable confronting thieves. The storage unit is far enough away that I wouldn't hear even a very loud alarm, although nearby residents likely would.

ADT Question! (Caution may be stupid)

    Posted: 01 May 2020 08:25 PM PDT

To my knowledge, my house only has 6 doors that have the ADT door sensors that connect to the ADT control panel thing. For some reason, it shows 9 zones though. I tried searching this stuff up but couldn't really find anything. By the way, I only have the alarm things that connect to the doors that get armed only when all the only are closed doors. I'm not quite sure why this is a thing and one thing I'd like to point out is that IDK where this zone 9 is as well. I mean I probably knew when the person installed it but going to be honest... I think I forgot.

    NextAlarm discontinuing service

    Posted: 01 May 2020 03:48 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Got an e-mail from NextAlarm regarding complete discontinuation of service. Came from a guy at sierrawireless.com.

    Two questions:

Anyone know about this and is it legit?

Anyone know a good monitoring place that can do a Concord 4 over VOIP or cellular cheaply?

I guess my ABN adapter is a $60 paperweight now.

    Thanks.

Alarm panel replacement help needed, monitoring company shutting down

    Posted: 01 May 2020 08:59 AM PDT

Hello, I have a GE CADDX NX-6 System that came with the home that I've been having monitored through NextAlarm for many years using an alarm broadband adapter. I've also added a Konnected.io interface to get IoT capabilites. Unfortunately NextAlarm is shutting down soon.

It seems like it's time to upgrade. I'd like to upgrade my system to a new WIRED kit with internet monitoring native capabilities (skip broadband adapter) as well as have native iOS mobile app support AND a keypad I can use at the front door for simple arm/disarm and/or if I resell the home. Ideally total service monitoring cost is <$15/mo.

Any recommendations for a panel/kit + UL Certified monitoring service (insurance friendly) that I can swap out the old keypad and NX-6/CADDX panel board but re-use my existing wired window / door sensors? NOTE: New system needs to be mobile app friendly and ideally easy to program using a Computer/Web/App instead of keypad?

(FWIW I know I can use Konnected in the panel with tablet and their suggested noonlight monitoring but honestly I don't like SmartThings cloud service reliability enough to trust it for my alarm monitoring service and I don't want to move to homeassistant or other local automation).

Looking for a couple cameras for our ranch

    Posted: 01 May 2020 05:06 PM PDT

So I'm looking to setup two outdoor security cameras on our private ranch. They will both be installed on trees near our cabin (one will be about 100 ft away from the cabin and the other about 500 ft away). I need both cameras to be weather-proof, have night-vision capabilities, have an image quality of at least 1280 x 720 pixels, and don't require Internet since the ranch does not have access to the Internet.

Additionally, I would prefer if both cameras were wireless to avoid the hassle of setting up cables and have motion-sensor capabilities so that it only needs to capture footage of whatever might be lurking near our ranch. However, I am open to suggestions that don't include these preferences.

If more details are needed or if I am being too vague in my descriptions, please let me know. Thank you!

Texecom Veritas 8 + Phone Dialler Help

    Posted: 01 May 2020 06:21 AM PDT

I've had the above system with a GJD HYL004 Autodialler fitted together about 10 years ago with no problems. Only maintenance I've performed is replacing the batteries when needed. I don't test the system so not too sure how long this hasn't been working. It has worked in the past and probably the last time was about 3 years ago when the battery went on it. The other day the alarm went off in zone 3 which is the PIR in the kitchen. Not sure why but since then it's been ok. The problem is that the autodialler never dialled my mobile. No indication on the display that it's been tripped, but just shows ok.

Checked the phone line and do get a dialling tone. Manually tripped it by sending a negative signal and it did dial out. On the Veritas 8 keypad I put the engineers code in - program - 05 - 01 which is for testing the sounders, strobe in the manual and toggle the external sounder (bell) output. This triggered the alarm's outside bell and also the autodialler which phoned my mobile.

Reset and tried an alarm trip which went as it should, but didn't trigger the dialler. I've checked the wiring in the Veritas box and 2 wires are connected in the B slot in the SAB section. One is the outside alarm box and the other is the dialler. B is a switched negative to activate sounder.

I've reprogrammed the trigger and arm delay times in the dialler just in case these had changed to 0 seconds which is the default.

Other than that what I've tried, I don't know why the autodialler won't dial when the alarm is triggered under normal conditions.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Has anyone moved from a professionally installed/managed service (eg ADT) to a self managed/automated service? (UK)

    Posted: 01 May 2020 05:09 AM PDT

I signed up to ADT about 2 years ago and pay about £30 per month. I have a monitored alarm service with one motion sensor internally and one door sensor (until I wrote this I thought I had like a dozen sensors, so I really feel like I'm overpaying now).

Has anyone had a similar service and then moved to a self installed version using something like Home Automation?

What benefits have you seen so far and what pitfalls did you face?

How long did it take you to break even financially?
