Abode? ADT? None of the above? Not sure who to go with.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 05:27 AM PDT

    Hey all.

I'm moving into a SFH for the first time next month and am looking into security systems for the place. It's a rental, so wireless was my first bet, but I remember all those issues with spoofing a few years back and even through searching I can't find anything in regards to if it was ever sufficiently fixed. Also, if one wireless alarm system is easily manipulated, wouldn't that be the same for others then?

I'm not sure who to go with as a whole though. I like what I read from Abode, but I get concerns with somehow messing up the DIY and having sensors fall off or something else leading to false alarms giving me a heart attack and sending the pets into a craze at 2AM. The professional installation with ADT then looks a bit more enticing, but I'm not really sure if ADT is worth the large overall chunk of money compared to the DIY companies.

Then there's simplisafe, ring, I think some company with a kangaroo.....

Add to that all the review and comparison sites I find definitely seem to be sponsored by one of the companies, and I have no idea who/where to go to.

Any recommendations you all would have?

    Thanks!

Using Zmodo Mini WiFi Camera with a Windows laptop

I want to access my zmodo webcam from my laptop. I see the web access they provide - is there a way to use it simply as a webcam in a windows app?

    Open Source Home Security

    Posted: 08 Apr 2020 01:46 AM PDT

    Hi,

I am a DIY/raspberry PI enthusiast. I have installed PIR sensors in my house and a few other sensors. These all link to a PI and I have some custom software that links all of this to a simple webpage showing a map of my house with the relevant colours to show movement.

The interface is starting to become time-consuming and was wondering if there is a good open-source "alarm" (that's what we can them in South Africa) system available. What is the correct thing to search for or can anyone recommend one?

    Many thanks!

    Looking for recommendations

I'm looking for a small security camera that doesn't require wifi. I don't care if it is wireless or not, as the few places I want them are near outlets and it wouldn't be hard to hide small cameras there. IF it is wireless, I need it to have about a 12-hr battery.

    Any info is appreciated. Thanks.
