I'm totally new to this but I think I'm finally ready to buy some cameras for this place. I have run ethernet to 4 outdoor locations under the eave of my roof, and hooked them all up to my network via PoE switch.

I have been told Amcrest cameras are good for these types of setups. What is the general consensus on these? Good hardware? Do they phone home or is it totally local?

I run a fairly basic Linux machine desktop in my office. I have heard good things about Blue Iris and Zonemaster. Are these recommended? Looks like they both have mobile access, what about mobile alerts for motion detection? Are these cloud-based? Would like to host local if possible.

My biggest desires are mobile access to the NVR, alerts for motion detection, and data security.

    Thanks!

    Amcrest email alerts

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 02:19 PM PST

I have an Amcrest IP camera with router blocking outgoing traffic to WAN. When I'm home I can view live footage in LAN and when I'm away from home I VPN to my LAN through a Raspi. I have motion detection footage that automatically records to a SIM card in the camera which can be accessed without issue.

Only problem is I cannot receive motion detection email alerts. This makes sense because I've blocked outgoing traffic from the camera to WAN. (Paranoid about camera calling home to Amcrest aka China).

Is there a workaround so I can receive some type of alert? I do not know how to restrict traffic to only allow communication to SMTP servers. it seems like this might be impossible since the cameras have to communicate to WAN in order for me to receive the emails. I do not know enough about networking to figure out options that might work. All I want is to know when the camera detects. Need some help!

Suggestions for low-cost security camera/alarm for rented townhouse?

    Posted: 06 Mar 2020 09:39 AM PST

I'm moving into my first place with my bf. We are renting an urban townhome in a low crime neighborhood in the city. We're interested in researching security camera or alarm options, but we aren't sure where to start.

The townhome has a front door, back door, and basement door with 2 first-story windows both in the front and back. We have a wooded area behind the home.

Our main concern is having camera footage available at the front door to monitor potential car break-ins, stolen packages, etc. My bf would also like to be able to see if a stranger is approaching the house while I am working from home on some days.

We are hoping to not spend a lot of money and just want a basic system which would beat having no protection whatsoever.

    1. Does anyone have a suggestion on some companies that offer low-cost, rental-friendly security cameras or alarms?

    2. Are we being unrealistic with hoping for a relatively low-cost solution?
